1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (44-43, 8-9 Second Half, Road) 3rd Place, 0.5 GB, CL Southern at Sunday, July 10, :05 p.m. Daniel S. Frawley Stadium Wilmington, Del. RHP Zach Hedges (6-7, 2.98 ERA) vs. LHP Colin Rodgers (2-5, 5.07 ERA) Game #88 Second Half Game #18 Road Game #46 Game vs. Blue Rocks #11 MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch App TuneIn Wilmington Blue Rocks (33-53, 6-11 Second Half, Home) 4th Place, 6.0 GB, CL Northern TORRES, CRAWFORD LEAD BIRDS TO COMEBACK The Pelicans trailed 6-5 in the seventh when Rashad Crawford led off the frame by reaching on an error. A wild pitch bumped him to second, allowing him to score to tie the game on Gleyber Torres RBI double. Torres took third on a delayed steal before coming in on a Yasiel Balaguert s RBI groundout to give Myrtle Beach a lead they would not relinquish. Crawford s RBI triple in the eighth added a much-needed insurance run before Wilmington catcher Chad Johnson homered to draw the Blue Rocks within 8-7 in the bottom of the inning. Ryan McNeil fanned two in a perfect ninth for his league-leading 12th save. Five Pelicans had multi-hit efforts in the win. A BALANCING ACT Back-to-back losses on Thursday and Friday sent Myrtle Beach s overall record down to.500 for the fourth time in 11 days. However, for the fourth time in that span, the Pelicans were able to win to stay above water. The last time the Birds saw their overall record below.500 was when they were 6-7 on April 19. Myrtle Beach also hasn t been seen their record dip below sea level this late in a campaign since 2010, when the Birds flew under.500 from a 4-5 start through the end of the season. COORDINATING ALL 27 OUTS For most of the season, out of the Pelicans pitching staff, the starting pitching has clearly been a strength. However, it appears that the bullpen has suddenly found its stride. In a 20-game stretch from May 20-June 9, the Birds bullpen posted an ugly 6.88 ERA (40 ER on 63 H in 52.1 IP). However, in the 25 games since then, Pelican relievers have shined, registering a 2.48 ERA (23 ER in 83.1 IP). Myrtle Beach s bullpen ERA sat at 1.72 before surrendering eight runs in 4.0 innings in Thursday s loss at Winston-Salem. A CLOSE RACE ALL THE WAY TO THE FINISH Myrtle Beach has played in a league-high 62 games decided by three runs or less this season. Considering nearly every team across baseball finishes at or around.500 in close games throughout a season, it is a little surprising to see that the Birds have posted a record in these contests. That success in close games partly explains why the Pelicans pythagorean record of is worse than their mark. FLYING SOUTH FOR THE SUMMER? In an 8-1 win over Potomac on July 1, Erick Leal fired five shutout innings. That marked Myrtle Beach s 13th start in 15 games in which their starter allowed fewer than three earned runs, including their sixth without surrendering even a single run. During that 15-game stretch, Pelicans starters collectively posted a 3.24 ERA (30 ER on 84 H in 83.1 IP). However, since that point, the Birds starting staff has struggled. Myrtle Beach has a grand total of two quality start in their last eight games, with just two pitchers making it through the sixth inning. Over this span, Pelican starters have a 6.69 ERA (29 ER in 39.0 IP). With 47 hits yielded over that time frame, Myrtle s lid-lifters are giving up 10.8 H/9. STUCK IN THE MUD The Pelicans offense has plated just 110 runs in their last 31 games, or 3.5 per contest in that span. A huge part of the problem has been a running game that has suddenly been struggling. Myrtle Beach is just 23-for-33 (69.7%) in stealing bases over that time frame, which comes right on the heels of maybe their best running game of the season. In the 26 games prior to this stretch, the Birds swiped 62 bases in 73 attempts for a 84.9% success rate. Even with the club stuck in the mud of late, the Pelicans 109 total steals are still the second in the Carolina League. WALKING THE CUBS WAY One of the hallmarks of the Chicago Cubs organizational philosophy is to control the strike zone both offensively and defensively. The Pelicans have certainly demonstrated that in Myrtle Beach has drawn 324 walks offensively this year, in a tie for the 13th-most of any Minor League Baseball team. In addition, they ve handed out just 236 free passes, which places them in the top 12 in MiLB and third in High-A. Birds pitchers have walked three or fewer in 30 of their last 38 games, with their hitters earning more free passes than their opponents in 27 of those contests.
