Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Pelicans starter Thomas Hatch dueled with Muddies starter Jordan Yamamoto, with neither right-hander ceding a run for the first five innings. Carolina finally got on the board with a Jake Gatewood sacrifice fly to left field, plating Corey Ray and putting the Mudcats up 1-0. That was all Yamamoto and reliever Kodi Medeiros needed to blank the Pelicans in a game for the first time all season. Hatch suffered the loss despite just one run allowed on four hits in 5.2 innings. Jordan Minch and Casey Bloomquist combined to pitch 3.1 scoreless frames. GAME OF THRONES Over their run of a league-high six consecutive postseason appearances, the Pelicans have won the Southern Division in six of the 12 halves since the run began in With a record right now, Myrtle Beach is perched atop the division, but just 1.5 games in front of Carolina and 2.0 up on Buies Creek. Over this magical run for the Pelicans, the club has seen Carolina League division winners total an average of exactly 41 wins per half (984 wins over 24 halves between the two divisions). That means that over the half s final nine games, the Birds would have to go 6-3 (.667) to get to 41 wins. In that scenario, for the Pelicans to win the division, Carolina, which is only playing 69 games this half due to a cancellation, would need to finish at least 8-1 to catch the Birds. Buies Creek would also need to go 8-1 for at least a tie. UNCOVERING THE CASE: BURT MACKLIN, FBI The Pelicans offense has really struggled this season, ranking at or near the bottom of the league in average, OBP, SLG and OPS. The Birds also rank no better than fourth in any other offensive category besides home runs (T-2nd). However, Myrtle Beach places fourth in runs scored, which means the Birds are certainly outperforming their underlying numbers. Perhaps the biggest reason for the Pelicans ability to cash in more runs than expected with their offensive statistics is hitting with runners in scoring position. The Birds are batting just.241/.303/.367 (.670 OPS) overall. However, with runners in scoring position, that line magically rises to.265/.326/.389 (.715 OPS). ANTIPASTO STARTS THE MEAL In a 13-game stretch from April 30 through May 11, Pelicans starters struggled significantly, tossing a full five innings just three times. During that span, Myrtle Beach s rotation gave up a combined 52 runs, 40 earned, on 71 hits in 53.0 innings (6.79 ERA, 12.1 H/9), lasting roughly 4.0 frames per outing. However, since that point, the Birds starters are turning the corner. Pelicans hurlers have tossed at least five innings in 23 of their past 27 games, with three of those exceptions coming in spot starts from the bullpen. Over that time frame, the club s starters have allowed just 54 runs, 46 earned, on 116 hits in innings (2.75 ERA, 6.9 H/9) during this time frame, lasting 5.2 frames per outing. THEY VE *LITERALLY* STOPPED WALKING PEOPLE On May 22, the Pelicans walked seven Salem hitters, pushing their season total to 151, an average of 3.4 per game, and the third-most in the league at the time. In the 16 games since then, the Birds have issued just 39 free passes, an average just 2.4 per contest. That has pushed Myrtle Beach from the third-most total walks to the third-fewest in the circuit. Opponents have strolled to first more than twice in a contest in just five of the 16 games during this stretch. PITCHING IN The Pelicans have won 12 of their last 16 games coming into play on Saturday, and a big part of that success is due to the club s pitching and defense. The Birds have ceded just 46 runs (2.9 per game) over this stretch, surrendering more than four in a game just three times. Myrtle Beach s 80 runs scored during this stretch works out to 5.0 per contest. PELICAN POINTS Myrtle Beach was shut out for the first time all season in Friday s contest to Carolina, losing just 1-0. It was the latest in recorded Pelicans history (through the 2005 season) that the Birds were blanked for the first time. Steele was the second player from George County to sign with Southern Miss, following in the footsteps of Mason Robbins, who played for the Winston- Salem Dash in The number 21 is special to Steele. His father, Ben, wore it as a wide receiver in the mid- 1980s at the University of Alabama before a back injury ended his career. Justin s older brother, Jordan, used it while pitching at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, his grandfather wore the number playing college basketball at Southern Mississippi and his great-grandfather wore the number playing professional baseball in Japan. Justin s father, Ben Steele was recruited to Alabama by Paul Bear Bryant, but ended up playing for Ray Perkins after Bryant retired. -Justin uses a very strict routine on the day of his start. He enjoys a veggie stir-fry omelet, iced coffee and water for breakfast before returning to meditate at his apartment. Once he arrives at the ballpark, he makes sure to throw his first warm-up pitch at exactly 6:32 p.m. for a 7:05 p.m. game. -Steele has credited his routine, and the meditation for his success in 2017: The biggest difference this year is that I have a pretty set-in-stone routine. I ve had it the whole entire year and I make sure that, the day of my start, I go by it religiously. In the meditations, it gives you about three minutes to let your mind wander and let your brain think about what it s going to think about. I always picture myself on the mound dominating. And once I get out in the game, it s like I ve already done this SEASON -Steele has allowed no more than two earned runs in six consecutive starts. Over that span, the lefty has ceded 12 runs, seven earned, on 32 hits in 33.1 innings for a 1.89 ERA. He has struck out 26 against 10 walks. -The left-hander has the seventh-highest ground ball rate in the Carolina League (52.4%), which has helped him to the seventh-lowest line drive rate (17.3%) and 13th-lowest fly ball rate (30.4%). -Steele has shown almost no platoon split so far, with lefties just 14-for-63 (.594 OPS) against him, compared to an.748 OPS that right-handed batters have put together in 151 at-bats SEASON -Steele had two starts in which he gave up eight runs.
