1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (7-15) at Salem Red Sox (14-8) Saturday, April 28, :05 p.m. Game No. 23 Road Game No. 12 Haley Toyota Field Salem, Va. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Alex Lange (0-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. RHP Jake Thompson (0-1, 4.43 ERA) MYRTLE BEACH DROPS SERIES OPENER 9-3 The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were unable to overcome an early flurry of Salem runs Friday in the Red Sox s 9-3 victory at Haley Toyota Field. Salem got on the board with Bobby Dalbec s RBI single in the third inning, and the Red Sox plated four more runs in both the fourth and fifth frames to go up 9-0. That was more than enough for Salem starter Roniel Raudes, who surrendered just two hits in six shutout innings, walking one and striking out three. The Pelicans finally scored for the first time in the seventh on Chris Pieters RBI single. A Salem error scored a Birds run in the eighth, and in the ninth, Connor Myers deposited an RBI single into center to pull Myrtle Beach within 9-3. However, the Pelicans could get no closer in the defeat. WHAT S LUCK GOT TO DO? Myrtle Beach s staff has gotten off to a slow start, as the club ranks at or near the bottom of the Carolina League in several pitching categories including ERA (5.08, 10th), hits allowed (200, second-most) and runs allowed (127, 10th). However, there may be a sign for optimism through a tough first month of the year. The Pelicans Fielding Independent Pitching, or FIP, an ERA estimator based on the factors most within a pitcher s control like walks, strikeouts and home runs, is a strong The huge gulf in the Birds FIP and ERA can partially be explained by poor luck: Opposing hitters are posting a.345 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) against Myrtle Beach, far above the baseball-wide mark of.300. Therefore, as the club s BABIP regresses towards the mean, the Pelicans should see their ERA fall down towards their FIP. GO THE DISTANCE Another bright sign for Myrtle Beach has been seeing the club s starting pitching work deeper into games. Pelicans starting pitchers have tossed at least five innings in nine of their last 11 games, yielding 35 runs, 28 earned, on 61 hits in a total of 57.0 frames for a 4.42 ERA (9.6 H/9, 16 BB, 2.5 BB/9, 58 K, 9.2 K/9). In comparison, over the season s first 11 contests, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers recorded five innings in a start just five times, capping out at those five frames. Over that span, they surrendered 42 runs, 31 earned, on 60 hits in 48.0 frames for a 5.81 ERA (10.4 H/9, 18 BB, 3.4 BB/9, 46 K, 8.6 K/9). MAN OR MACHIN? Pelicans infielder Vimael Machin got off to slow start on the season, posting just one hit in his first six games (1-for-23,.043). However, the San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico native has reached base in each of his 12 games since, including eight contests with multiple trips on the basepaths. Over this 12- game stretch Machin is for 12-for-37 with four doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and 16 walks, slashing.324/.528/.595 (1.123 OPS). Impressive considering his batting average on balls in play (BABIP) is just.239, far below the baseball-wide average of.300, Machin leads the Pelicans in both wrc+ (133) and woba (.382). He has walked 17 times this season against only 12 strikeouts. Behind this contact-oriented approach is a 7.7 percent swinging strike rate, the ninth-lowest in the Carolina League, with a 24.4 line drive percentage that places as the 17th-highest in the circuit. APRIL SHOWERS, MAY FLOWERS? Myrtle Beach lost in Friday s series opener with Salem 9-3, making this year s Pelicans squad the first team in recorded club history (through the beginning of the 2005 season) to suffer at least 15 losses in April. The Birds start to this season still matches the 2010 squad for the worst in the club history, with that prior club beginning the year 7-17 en route to an ugly record. The 2010 Pelicans also represent the last Myrtle Beach squad to miss the playoffs. The Birds have made a Carolina League record-tying seven postseason appearances in a row since then. FREE AS A BIRD Salem stole another base against the Pelicans on Friday, continuing a trend against Myrtle Beach s batteries. Opponents are 28-for-32 (87.5 percent) in swiping bases against the Birds this season, the worst such mark in the Carolina League. In fact, that 12.5 percent caught stealing rate is the worst in the circuit since at least the 2005 season. Opponents are 24-for-their-last-25 in stolen base attempts against Myrtle Beach, including a run of 20 consecutive successful swipes at one point. PELICAN POINT Myrtle Beach is just 2-8 in games decided by three runs or less this season. The Birds went (.535) in those contests a year ago. The right-hander was one of two pitchers the Cubs tabbed in the first round, joining southpaw Brendon Little, who was picked 27th overall out of the State Junior College of Florida. -Alex was adopted on the day after he was born by Renee Lange and her husband Craig. When Alex was in first grade, the couple divorced and Renee raised Alex by herself. She has been the biggest influence on my life, Alex told NOLA.com. She adopted me and raised me by herself for most of my life. She has helped me through everything.... She had to play the bad guy at times. Everything I ve accomplished I attribute to her. My mom tells me sometimes that she was lucky that she adopted me, but I m the one who got lucky. I can t imagine what my life would be like without her. -Alex first visited LSU and Baton Rouge in June of 2012, when he pitched for a Baton Rouge-based Marucci Elite summer team. The Missouri native instantly fell in love with the Bayou culture, and learned to cook Cajun favorites for when he returned back home. On that same note, he also made sure to stock his mother s spice cabinet with a Louisiana special, Tony Chachere s. -Lange had a legendary career at LSU. The right-hander pitched the Tigers into the College World Series twice, winning a pair of games in Omaha. He finished his career just three strikeouts shy of the career record of 409 set by Scott Schultz over four seasons from Overall, Lange posted a 30-9 career record with a 2.91 ERA, 143 walks and 406 strikeouts in 350 innings while limiting opponents to a.222 batting average.
