MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Jose Paulino (0-1, ERA) vs. RHP Brandon Bielak (1-1, 2.16 ERA) BIRDS FALTER LATE IN 6-2 LOSS Pelicans starter Keegan Thompson pitched five shutout innings Tuesday, but Myrtle Beach could not stave off a late Buies Creek rally in the Astros 6-2 victory. The game was scoreless through four innings until Kevonte Mitchell sprinted home to score on a wild pitch in the fifth for the game s first run. Thompson ceded just three hits while recording four strikeouts in his five frames. However, with the right-hander out of the game, Buies Creek pounced on the Birds bullpen. The Astros tallied three runs in the sixth, another in the seventh and two more in the eighth to go up 6-1. A Mitchell sacrifice fly pulled the Pelicans to within 6-2 in the ninth, but they could get no closer. ALL OR NOTHING Myrtle Beach entered Monday s series opener at Buies Creek coming off arguably their best offensive set in club history. The Birds compiled 41 runs over their four-game set at Down East, the club s most tallies in a single series in recorded club history (since the 2005 season). However, against a vaunted Buies Creek staff that went 32 consecutive frames without allowing a run, Myrtle Beach has registered just two runs on four hits. Thus, 13 games into the season, while the Pelicans do rank in the middle of the pack of the league in several offensive categories, they have been held to six hits or fewer in seven contests. In addition, Myrtle Beach has gone hitless into at least the sixth inning in three contests. The Birds have also been shut out three times, tied for the most in the league. THAT S OUR BUDDY The 2018 campaign is manager Buddy Bailey 30th season as a minor league manager. A native of Madison Heights, Va., Bailey is the 11th manager in Minor League Baseball history to accumulate at least 2,000 career victories. According to Baseball Reference, Bailey s 2,009-1,854 (.521) record means he is just one win away from passing Andy Gilbert, who skippered in the New York and San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves organizations from , for sole possession of 10th place in MiLB history. Stan Wasiak, who managed in the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers organization, along with the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox s systems, respectively, is the minors all-time wins leader at 2,530-2,314 (.522). THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE Myrtle Beach s 3-10 start to the season is their worst start to a campaign in recorded club history (since the 2005 season). The Pelicans have suffered series losses in three of their first four sets, and are hoping to salvage their slate in Buies Creek in Wednesday s contest. Should the Birds falter on Wednesday, it would mark their second series sweep of the campaign, the earliest the club would ve been broomed twice since at least It would also mark Myrtle Beach s 11th loss in April, matching their most since dropping 14 April contests in MAN OR MACHIN? Pelicans infielder Vimael Machin got off to slow start on the season, posting just one hit in his first six games (1-for-23,.043). However, the San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico native has now reached base in six consecutive games, with multiple trips on the base paths in four of those contests. Machin is for 7-for-his-last-19 (.368) with three doubles, six RBIs and nine walks for a whopping.571 on-base percentage. In Myrtle Beach s series at Down East, Machin twice tied a career-high with three walks and also matched career-bests in hits (four) and runs scored (three) against the Woodies. RELIEF FACTOR Myrtle Beach s bullpen combined for a 1.35 ERA in their first series of the season, surrendering just two runs on eight hits (5.4 H/9) in 13.1 innings against Frederick. However, in the nine games since then, Pelicans relievers have been lit up for 39 runs, 36 earned, on 44 hits (10.5 H/9) in 37.2 frames, resulting in a 8.60 ERA. There could also be an interesting trend to explain the sudden struggles. So far, the Birds bullpen has accounted for 46.8 percent of the club s innings. In comparison, the 2016 and 2017 Pelicans, also managed by Buddy Bailey, accounted for 38.0 and 44.2 percent of the club s frames, respectively. Sure enough, in their set against Frederick, the 2018 Myrtle Beach bullpen walked just two batters in 13.1 frames (1.4 BB/9). Since then, Birds relievers issued 28 free passes in 37.2 innings (6.7 BB/9). PELICAN POINT Myrtle Beach is just 1-6 in games decided by three runs or less. The left-hander was named a Northwest League All-Star and a two-time Northwest League Pitcher of the Week. -Paulino was named the Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July of Between Eugene and South Bend, Paulino worked to a 1.50 ERA with 31 strikeouts in just 30 innings pitched SEASON 2017 SEASON -After a very slow start to the season, Paulino significantly improved as the campaign went along. In the second half of the 2017 season, Paulino pitched in 15 games, including 11 starts. He went 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 73.0 innings (70 H, 19 BB, 59 K). The southpaw was 2-2 with a 6.04 ERA in 12 first-half outings, 11 of them starts (50.2 IP, 55 H, 23 BB, 35 K). -Paulino was more effective working out of the stretch. In 248 plate appearances with runners on, opponents batted.249/.310/.371 (.681 OPS) against Paulino.
