1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (89) at Down East Wood Ducks (89) Sunday, April 23, :00 p.m. Game No. 18 Road Game No. 11 Grainger Stadium Kinston, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn LHP Justin Steele (11, 0.63 ERA) vs. RHP Tyler Davis (00, 5.40 ERA) HOMERS POWER WOOD DUCKS TO 82 VICTORY A fiverun fifth helped the Wood Ducks beat the Pelicans 82 on Saturday. Myrtle Beach and Down East were tied at two when Josh Morgan tripled to begin the sixth. A Chuck Moorman sacrifice fly put the Wood Ducks ahead 32. In the seventh, the Wood Ducks bashed three home runs a threerun shot by Josh Altmann and backtoback shots from Eduard Pinto and Morgan increased the Down East lead to 82. The Wood Ducks struck first, scoring a run in the first on a wild pitch before plating another on Jairo Beras RBI single in the second. Myrtle Beach was able to tie the game by scoring on a passed ball in the fourth and an error in the fifth. Adonis Paula collected two of the Birds six hits. ON THE OFFENSIVE For the strong majority of the season, Myrtle Beach s offense has struggled to score runs. However, Thursday s 117 win may be an example of the Birds offense coming out of their shell. The Pelicans 11 runs were the most in any game this season (their previous high was seven). Myrtle Beach notched a seasonhigh 12 hits, including a 2017best three home runs. The Birds sixrun fifth inning also doubled their best previous output in any inning all season prior to Thursday. Even after Saturday s 82 loss, Myrtle Beach has now scored at least six runs in three of the past five games after doing so just twice in the first 12 contests of the season. A potential factor? The schedule: Myrtle Beach saw Lynchburg (2.49 ERA) and Buies Creek (3.50 ERA), who rank first and fourth, respectively, in the Carolina League in ERA, for the first 14 games of the season. Down East s 4.76 staff ERA is ninth in the 10team circuit. EVERY ROSE HAS ITS THORN Throughout the early going in the 2017 season, Matt Rose has been one of the most lethal hitters in the Carolina League. The Palm Bay, Florida native bashed his fourth home run of the season in Thursday s win at Down East, a mark that is tied for second in the league. Rose has averaged one home run every atbats, which places him third in the circuit. He has also driven in 11 runs, which ranks in the league s top 10. Interestingly, Rose has yet to draw a walk in 64 atbats to begin the season. The longest streak in major league history without a walk to begin a season is 207, set by Alex Sanchez in THE LAW OFFICES OF LUCK, BABIP AND RISP Throughout the history of baseball, nearly every single team across every single professional level posts a batting average on balls in play (BABIP) around.300. In addition, all clubs also register extremely similar numbers when comparing their overall hitting line to their hitting line with runners in scoring position. After a rough start for the offense in the early going of 2017, the Pelicans are finally seeing those numbers normalize. The club s BABIP is now.296, shooting up from where it was in the low.270s last week. Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach has an overall hitting line of.230/.306/.353 (.659 OPS). Magically, they ve run their numbers up to.233/.311/.338 (.649 OPS) with runners in scoring position, nearly the exact same production. Because of these regressions back towards the mean, the Pelicans offense has seen its production steadily increase, averaging 5.6 runs per game (28 runs) in their last five contests, compared to 3.0 (36 runs) in the first 12 games of the year. NO LEFTOVERS Even though Myrtle Beach possesses eight righthanded bats and one switchhitter out of their 12 active position players, the Pelicans have hit righthanded pitching much better than lefthanded pitching this year. Myrtle Beach has slashed.249/.322/.376 (.698 OPS) in 418 atbats against righties, but those numbers fall to.178/.265/.289 (.554 OPS) in 154 atbats versus southpaws. In addition, 73.2 percent (30 out of 41) of the Birds extrabase hits have come while facing righthanded pitching. Ironically, the Pelicans won their first two games of the Down East series against a lefthanded starter. That helped pushed the Birds to 42 against opposing southpaw starters, compared to 47 against starting righthanders. Myrtle Beach faced three straight lefties to begin the series at Down East and is scheduled to face two more southpaws against Wilmington. PELICAN POINTS Myrtle Beach has seen opponents try to steal 34 bases this season, the most of any team in the Carolina League. The Birds have thrown out 32.4 percent (11 caught stealing in 34 attempts) of wouldbe base stealers, which ranks sixth in the circuit... The Pelicans will vie for a series win over Down East on Sunday. They have lost their last three sets coming into this fourgame series.
