1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (48-36, 5-9) at Frederick Keys (35-47, 4-9) Friday, July 7, :00 p.m. Game No. 85 Second Half Game No. 15 Road Game No. 40 NYMEO Field at Harry Grove Stadium Frederick, Md. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Duncan Robinson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Ofelky Peralta (1-7, 6.67 ERA) vs. THE KEYS 2017 vs. Keys in Myrtle Beach in Frederick All-Time vs. Frederick (.541) 2016 Regular Season vs. Frederick in Myrtle Beach in Frederick BIRDS BATS LAG IN RUBBER MATCH LOSS Myrtle Beach s offense compiled just five hits in Thursday s rubber match to Buies Creek, as the Astros shut out the Pelicans 3-0. Spencer Johnson homered for the game s first run in the second inning and then Alex DeGoti s RBI single in the fourth increased the Buies Creek lead to 2-0. The score would remain that way until the ninth, until Ryne Birk s sacrifice fly padded the margin to 3-0. Astros starter Ryan Hartman ceded just two hits in five shutout innings to earn the win, and then Hector Perez pitched four scoreless frames to pick up his second save. David Berg pitched 2.1 blank frames out of the bullpen. Pelicans starter Justin Steele yielded just two runs in 4.2 innings. A TALE OF TWO HALVES Myrtle Beach finished the first half with the Carolina League s best record at 43-27, and also the circuit s best run differential at +43. However, the club has started the second half 5-9, matching the 2015 Pelicans for the worst beginning to a second half in recorded club history (through the 2005 season). In the first 14 games of the second half, the Birds have suffered four defeats of at least seven runs, something that happened twice in the first 70 games. By scoring 57 runs (4.1 runs per game), but allowing 86 (6.1 runs per game), the Pelicans have a -32 run differential in the second half of the season. By falling in Thursday s rubber game to Buies Creek, the Pelicans failed to win their fourth straight series, their longest drought without a set win since not earning a series win in seven straight sets from June 9 through July 7 of last season. STARTING ON THE WRONG FOOT During the last 37 games of the first half (May 12 through June 18), Pelicans starters yielded just 66 runs, 55 earned, on 159 hits in innings for a 2.38 ERA (6.9 H/9, 5.2 innings per start). Over that time frame, the squad s starters pitched at least five frames in 31 games, with five of those six exceptions coming in spot starts from the bullpen. However, the start of the second half has seen very inconsistent starting pitching from the Birds. In the half s 14 games so far, Myrtle Beach s starters have ceded 48 runs, 37 earned, on 84 hits in 58.2 frames for a 5.68 ERA (12.9 H/9, 4.1 innings per start). FEELING STRONG Thanks to a walk in Thursday s loss to Buies Creek, Pelicans infielder Bryant Flete increased his on-base streak to 16 games. During that roll, the native of Cumairebo in Venezuela is 24-for-63 at the plate, slashing.381/.418/.474 with three doubles, one home run, nine RBIs, three walks and one hit by pitch. Flete s streak is the second-longest active run in the Carolina League behind Wilmington s Anderson Miller at 21 games beginning on June 1. WHEN THE PEN RUNS OUT OF INK Heading into their matchup with Down East on June 23, Myrtle Beach s bullpen sported a sparkling 2.96 ERA on the season. Just 13 games later, though, that mark has shot all the way up to Over these past 13 games, Pelicans relievers have surrendered 40 runs, 27 earned, on 62 hits in 58.1 innings for a 4.17 ERA. The Birds bullpen has struggled, in particular, over the last seven contests, posting an 8.53 ERA (24 R, 24 ER, on 35 H in 25.1 IP, 14 BB, 23 K). Perhaps a reason for the club s relief pitching struggles has been the bullpen having to throw too many innings. In the second half of the season, the club s starters have thrown 58.2 frames, while Pelicans relievers have tossed 60.1 innings. WHAT THE GREEK PHILOSOPHERS SAY The Pelicans overall record is the third-best in the Carolina League, and the club has already clinched a spot in the postseason in September. That said, a squad s Pythagorean record, based on how many runs a club has scored and allowed, is often a better indicator of team quality. With a +16 run differential, Pythagorean says the Pelicans should actually be 44-40, four games worse than their actual record. One big reason the Pelicans are outplaying their Pythagorean record is their success in close games. The club is 14-9 (.609) in one-run games, the second-best mark in the league, and (.612) in contests decided by no more than three runs, normally games clubs would expect to go about.500 in. PELICAN POINT Against southpaws this year, the Birds are slashing.232/.285/.351 (.636 OPS). The club has been better against right-handed pitching, batting.257/.324/.383 (.707 OPS).
