1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (52-41, 9-14) at Buies Creek Astros (54-41, 17-8) Tuesday, July 18, :00 p.m. Game No. 94 Second Half Game No. 24 Road Game No. 46 Jim Perry Stadium Lillington, N.C. MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast MiLB First Pitch TuneIn RHP Duncan Robinson (0-2, 5.00 ERA) vs. RHP Hector Perez (4-3, 2.90 ERA) RUCKER HELPS BIRDS SPLIT DE FACTO TWIN BILL Mike Rucker struck out a career-high 10 batters in a career-best eight innings Monday, helping the Pelicans split a de facto doubleheader with Buies Creek. Despite Rucker s heroics, Myrtle Beach and the Astros were deadlocked in a tie until the 11th inning. Finally, with two outs in the top of the 11th, Jesse Hodges and Tyler Alamo lined RBI singles to put the Birds ahead 2-0. James Norwood and Dakota Mekkes combined with Rucker to strike out 17 batters, matching a Pelicans season-high. Mekkes earned his second save. In the completion of Sunday s suspended game, Buies Creek scored three in the seventh, only for Myrtle Beach to tie in the eighth. However, the Astros plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to win 5-4. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST In Monday s scheduled contest following the completion of Sunday s suspended game, Mike Rucker, James Norwood and Dakota Mekkes teamed to whiff 17 Buies Creek Astros, matching the most for the Birds staff in one game this season (June 8 at Carolina). Rucker worked eight innings for the Pelicans, equaling Thomas Hatch (June 14 vs. Frederick) for the longest a Myrtle Beach starter had pitched in a game in No Pelicans starting pitcher has tossed more than eight frames in a game since Luis Parra fired nine on May 12, 2014 against Winston-Salem. JUST A HEADS-UP On June 23, the Pelicans 3.16 ERA was the best in the league. However, the club s FIP, an ERA estimator based on the factors only a pitcher can completely control (K, BB, HR), sat at That ERA-FIP difference symbolized the Birds had been fortunate to rate at the top of the circuit. Since then, the Pelicans have yielded 125 runs, 105 earned, on 217 hits in innings over 22 games. That means Myrtle Beach has ceded 4.8 runs per game, courtesy of 9.9 hits yielded per nine innings and a 4.77 ERA. However, the bright side is that the club s FIP is now 3.44, a tad below their 3.56 ERA. Poor pitching and defense are certainly reasons for the club s struggles in preventing opponents from scoring. But so is a.307 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) that is a bit above the baseball-wide average of.300. That means more balls put in play are falling in for hits than usual, which partially explains a lower team FIP than ERA. SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER Myrtle Beach has lost four of their first six series of the second half, with the other two resulting in splits. Thus, the Birds have not won a set since taking three of four from Down East to close the first half from June 15 through 18. This six-set drought is the longest the Pelicans have gone without a series win since they either lost or split seven sets in a row from June 9 through July 7 of last season. No team in recorded Pelicans history (through the 2005 season) has ever gone six series in a row to start the second half without a set win. Not coincidentally, Myrtle Beach s 9-14 record is their worst start to any half to in recorded club history. THE CHICKS DIG IT By comparing each Minor League Baseball team s home run rates both at home and on the road, Baseball America has given TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark a home run factor of 109, meaning the facility is nine percent more home run friendly than the average ballpark (park factor of 100). That 109 mark is the second-highest of any stadium in the Carolina League. However, outside of a Joey Gallo-aided 2014 team, the Pelicans hasn t finished in the top two of the circuit in dingers since With 76 bombs so far this year, the Birds do rank second in the league in homers. The Pelicans are averaging 0.82 homers per game, their best mark since bashing 1.53 dingers per game in FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER A squad s Pythagorean record, based on how many runs a club has scored and allowed, is often a better indicator of team quality than a team s actual record. With a +17 run differential, Pythagorean says the Birds should actually be 48-45, four games worse than their actual record of A big reason the Pelicans are outplaying their Pythagorean record is their success in close games. The club is (.589) in contests decided by no more than three runs, normally games teams would expect to go about.500 in. Interestingly enough, the Birds have played seven games in a row decided by three runs or less, posting a 3-4 record. PELICAN POINT Myrtle Beach played a combined 16 innings yesterday, their longest day of baseball since engaging in a 20-inning affair over a doubleheader with Lynchburg on May 14.
