Frederick led 3-1 in the seventh when an error put Tyler Alamo on. Kevonte Mitchell then bashed a two-run home run to tie the game. Later in the frame, Connor Myers, who went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch, raced home to score on a wild pitch to put the Birds ahead 4-3. Matt Swarmer pitched seven strong innings before yielding to Wyatt Short and Tyler Peyton, who fired a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, to finish off the win. The Keys jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and another in the third. However, Myers laced an RBI single in the fifth to get the Pelicans on the board and start the comeback. REMEMBER THE ALAMO Over 13 games from April 16 through May 7, Pelicans first baseman Tyler Alamo went just 8-for-46 (.174), drawing just three walks with one hit-by-pitch for a.240 on-base percentage. However, the Cypress, Calif., native has notched a hit in each of his eight games since, a season-high that also includes three multi-hit efforts. Over these last eight contests, Alamo is 13-for-29 (.448), lashing three doubles and two home runs to drive in seven runs. He has also drawn four walks. Perhaps the biggest change for Alamo in 2018 has been his ability to get the ball in the air. After lifting 31.5 percent of his batted balls in the air in 2017, his fly ball rate of 43.0 percent in 2018 ranks as the 12thhighest in the Carolina League. PEREDA, PEREDA, PEREDADISE Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season offensively for Myrtle Beach, Jhonny Pereda leads the Pelicans in average (.303) and on-base percentage (.371). Over his last 29 starts, the native of San Sebastian, Venezuela is hitting.324/.385/.423 with three doubles, one triple, two home runs and 24 RBIs. Pereda ranks fourth in the Carolina League in average due to a contact-oriented approach that has seen him whiff at just 7.9 percent of pitches, the 11th-lowest in the circuit. Pereda s frequent contact is often strong, as his 26.6 percent line drive rate places 11th in the league. He has sprayed his batted balls to the opposite field (42.3 percent, second-most in the league) and up the middle (25.8 percent) a combined 68.1 percent of the time. WE CAN WORK IT OUT Heading into play on April 28, Myrtle Beach s ERA of 5.08 ranked dead last in the Carolina League. In the 19 games since then, the Pelicans have dropped their team ERA all the way down to The club s sudden resurgence is multipronged, however. For one, the Birds FIP, an ERA estimator based on the factors most within a pitcher s control like walks, strikeouts and home runs, on April 28 was 3.34 (Myrtle Beach s FIP is currently 3.26). Thus, partly because of some unsustainable factors like a high batting average on balls in play of.345, far above the baseball-wide average of.300, the Pelicans were bound to see some natural regression to the mean. The club s BABIP is now.318, but the Pelicans have also pitched better of late too; Over their last 19 games, Myrtle Beach s 51 walks are the seventhfewest in High-A. The Birds 3.35 ERA ranks as the 11th-best in High-A over that span. FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER Myrtle Beach s 4-3 win over Frederick only continued a trend for the Birds. Of Myrtle Beach s last 18 games, 13 have been decided by three runs or fewer. The Pelicans have gone 8-5 in those contests, and the club is in these close games over the course of the 2018 season. Interestingly enough, Myrtle Beach s Achilles heel has come in two-run contests, in which the Birds have posted just a 1-9 record. ERROR 503: SERVICE UNAVAILABLE Myrtle Beach did not make an error Saturday, but the club has still struggled defensively in The Pelicans 58 errors on the season are eight more than Lynchburg, the next-closest Carolina League team. In fact, the Birds total is more than double that of Buies Creek s 24, which is the best mark in the circuit. Myrtle Beach has made 33 errors in the 21 games since April 26, the second-most in MiLB over that span. PELICAN POINTS With a win in Sunday s doubleheader against Frederick, the Birds will break a four-series winless streak... Over the past 19 games, the Pelicans bullpen has pitched 60.0 innings, giving up 27 runs, 18 earned, on 54 hits (8.1 H/9) for a 2.70 ERA. Birds relievers have whiffed 64 (9.6 K/9) over this span. Thompson returned to Auburn University, where he went 7-4 with a 2.41 ERA in 15 starts. He tossed a career-high 93.1 innings and struck out 75 batters and was drafted by the Cubs in the third round of the 2017 draft. -Thompson finished his Auburn career with a record and 2.46 ERA in 41 appearances, including 38 starts, and innings of work. He struck out 210 while walking 56 during his three seasons on the mound, holding opponents to a.207 batting average. During his redshirt junior campaign in 2017, he allowed three earned runs or fewer in 13 of 15 starts. -The Cullman, Ala., native began his Auburn with a boom, going 5-3 with a team-leading 2.01 ERA in Thompson earned Freshman All-American honors from several outlets, making him the first Auburn player to earn multiple Freshman All-America honors since Thompson shares some history with another Auburn legend. Both he and outfielder/running back Bo Jackson were drafted 105th overall in the MLB Draft. Jackson was selected three times in baseball s draft, with the final time coming in the fourth round at pick No. 105 by the Kansas City Royals in Jackson would make his major league debut later that season on September 2, 1986, when Kansas City hosted the Chicago White Sox. Jackson made his NFL debut for the Oakland Raiders in Perhaps the most successful player selected with 105th pick is Cliff Lee, who was taken by the Montreal Expos at No. 105 (fourth round) in the 2000 draft. Lee went 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA for Cleveland in 2008, winning the American League Cy Young Award.
