The score was tied at one in the fifth inning when Robert Garcia tripled to begin the frame. Two batters later, Garcia beat the throw home on a grounder to first to give Myrtle Beach a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, Myers lined a two-run single to center and Paula followed with an RBI single of his own to extend the advantage to 5-1. In the eighth, Roberto Caro walked with the bases loaded to widen the margin to 6-1. Mike Rucker scattered 11 hits to only allow one run in 6.1 innings, and Pedro Araujo tossed 2.2 hitless frames for his eighth save. DOUBLE VISION Thanks to Thursday s postponement, the Pelicans and Red Sox will play a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The twin bill will be Myrtle Beach s seventh of the season, with the Birds posting a 6-6 mark in double dippers. Of those six doubleheaders, the Pelicans have swept two, split two and been swept in two, including a brooming by Potomac in the Birds last twin bill on July 30. Salem has posted an 8-9 mark in doubleheaders this season. MAN OR MACHIN? After batting.320/.371/.500 with 10 homers and a Midwest League-leading 57 RBIs with Low-A South Bend, Myrtle Beach infielder Vimael Machin has not missed a beat since his July 14 promotion to High-A. The Puerto Rico native is slashing.309/.356/.397 with a home run and eight RBIs in his first 18 contests with the Birds, and is currently riding a nine-game on-base streak. During this nine-game roll, Machin is 12-for-33 (.364) with three doubles and six RBIs. WHO SAYS YOU CAN T GO HOME? Even with a win over Frederick in Wednesday s series finale, the Pelicans still finished their seven-game road trip with a 2-5 record, their most losses on a voyage since going 1-5 at Carolina and Winston-Salem from June of the 2015 season. Partially thanks to nine losses in 11 games, the club has lost four consecutive series. Myrtle Beach is in half two sets after recording a set record in the first half of the season. THE RIVALRY CONTINUES An outstanding Salem team stood in the way of Myrtle Beach s run all the way to the 2016 Mills Cup Championship, and the Pelicans and Red Sox engaged in some outstanding contests last season. Including the postseason, the club s played 19 times, with the Birds posting just an 8-11 record against Salem. Of those 19 meetings, an incredible 13 were nailbiters decided by three runs or less. The Pelicans were 6-7 in those tight contests. QUIT PLAYING GAMES WITH MY HEART On July 8, the Pelicans sported an impressive, albeit fortunate, (.612) record in games decided by three runs or less. Most clubs across baseball post a mark around.500 in these close contests. As if to almost prove the point, beginning on July 9, 17 of the Birds last 23 games have been decided by no more than three tallies. The club has gone just 6-11 (.353) in those close games, regressing their overall mark to (.545) in contests decided by three tallies or less. THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED On June 22, Myrtle Beach won to improve to (.620), a season-high 17 games over.500, and the best record in the Carolina League. The club s +49 run differential was also the top mark in the circuit. However, since that point, the Birds have mustered just a (.342) record, and the club has stunningly posted a -55 run differential in those 38 games. Beginning June 23, the Pelicans have scored 146 runs, or 3.8 per game, a tad below the 4.5 per contest rate they registered in the first 71 contests of the year. The biggest issue, though, has been the club s pitching and defense. Myrtle Beach yielded 265 runs through the first 71 games of the year, an average of 3.7 per contest. However, since June 23, the Birds have surrendered 201 tallies, or 5.3 runs per game. The club s ERA was a league-best 3.16 through 71 games, but it is just 4.73 since. PELICAN POINT Myrtle Beach hasn t won a series at home since the first half, when they swept Frederick from June They are 0-6 in their home sets in the second half after going in their half one series in the Grand Strand. He will be making his professional debut with Myrtle Beach in 2017 after Chicago held him from pitching last season. -In order to acquaint him to the organization, the Cubs had him spend time with Low-A South Bend during their pennant run to have him get to know his new teammates. -Baseball America says Hatch has the Best Slider in the Cubs organization SEASON -The Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, Hatch went 3-2 with a 0.98 ERA in the month of June for the Pelicans, ceding just three earned runs in 27.2 innings. The Tulsa native struck out 22 against just six walks over the month, with his 0.98 ERA ranking as the second-best in the Carolina League. The right-hander s.221 batting average against in June placed him 10th in the circuit. -Hatch came within one of a Pelicans record with 13 strikeouts on May 28 at Carolina. Kyle Davies set the club record by whiffing 14 Kinston Indians on June 12, 2004 at Grainger Stadium. That mark was later matched by Julio Teheran on May 31, 2010 at Frederick. Teheran s 14 strikeouts came in eight innings of work, while Davies mark was compiled over six innings. Hatch s 13 whiffs tied the late Tommy Hanson (13 in 5.0 IP on 4/4/08 at WIL) and Joe Weiland (13 in 6.0 IP on 5/4/11 at POT) for the third-most in club history. -On June 14, Hatch pitched eight scoreless innings against Frederick - the longest any Pelicans starter has gone in a game since Luis Parra fired nine frames against Winston- Salem on May 12, In a nine-start stretch from May 22 through July 8, Hatch ceded just 15 runs, seven earned, on 43 hits in 48.0 innings for a 1.31 ERA (49 K, 10 BB). In the process, his season ERA dropped from 6.27 to However, in his last three starts, he has surrendered 11 runs, 10 earned, on 18 hits in 14.0 innings for a 6.43 ERA (17 K, 5 BB). -Hatch made his professional debut on April 7 at Lynchburg, going five innings of one-hit ball. He allowed an unearned run while walking three and striking out two. It took him until June 3, his 11th start, to earn his first professional win. In that outing against Down East, the righthander scattered five hits in 6.1 shutout frames, fanning five against one free pass. -The right-hander left his April 17 start vs. Buies Creek after getting hit in the head with a line drive. Hatch did not suffer any concussion-like symptoms, and made his next start on April 22 at Down East. -Hatch has posted some platoon splits in Lefties own a.778 OPS in 149 at-bats against him, while right-handed hitters have registered a.626 OPS in 218 at-bats. ADDITIONAL CAREER NOTES -As a redshirt sophomore in 2016, Hatch was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year, a First Team All-American by D1Baseball.com and a Third Team All-American by Baseball America. The Tulsa native went 9-3 with a 2.14 ERA in innings to lead Oklahoma State to the College World Series. -Hatch missed the entire 2015 season with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament that didn t require surgery. Instead, he redshirted and received a platelet rich plasma injection from Dr. James Andrews, opting against surgery because of the minor nature of the tear. -Born and raised in Tulsa, Hatch grew up a huge Oklahoma State fan. His father, Dean, walked on to the Cowboys baseball team, and Hatch has an uncle and two aunts who also attended Oklahoma State. Because of his ties to the Pokes, Hatch decided to pass up on offers from powers North Carolina, TCU and LSU to play in Stillwater. -He was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 32nd round of the 2013 draft out of Jenks High School, but passed up their offer to attend Oklahoma State. -Hatch was named an Under Armour All-American in both 2012 and 2013, and was ranked as the top prospect in Oklahoma by ESPN.
