1 Myrtle Beach Pelicans (16-10, 4-6 home) First Place, CL Southern, 0.5 GA LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans split a twin bill with the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday, falling 5-4 in game one and taking game two DAURY TORREZ took a 4-3 lead into the ninth before leaving two runners on that JAMES PUGLIESE allowed to score to give up the lead...after trailing 1-0 in the first, the Pelicans plated two in the bottom of the inning to tie and take the lead for good...taylor SCOTT allowed two runs, one earned, in three-plus SEE YOU NEXT HALF: Tonight marks the final time that these two clubs will face off in the first half. The two came into this series at number one and two in the Southern Division standings and won t play again until July 1. The Pelicans and Red Sox have met each of the last two seasons in the Southern Division Championship Series. The Red Sox swept the Pelicans 2-0 in 2013, while the Pelican s won 2-1 in the series a year ago. The all-time series is extremely close, with the Pelicans taking 164 and falling in 162. CAN T YOU SEE I M BUSY: Coming off the doubleheader yesterday, the Pelicans complete the series today and then head to Winston-Salem, where they will play five games in four days. The Birds next off day is on May 18, which will end a stretch of 22 games in 20 days. TRIPLE C : The combination of BEN CARHART, VICTOR CARATINI, and JEIMER CANDELARIO have contributed quite a bit of production over the last 4 games. Each man collected a hit in game one in the current series against Salem. Carhart scored the goahead run in the series opener on Tuesday, while Candelario and Caratini each had hits in game one of the twin bill yesterday. Candelario is 5- for-his-last 15, while Caratini rides a 4-game hit-streak. BOPPIN BILLY: Outfielder Billy McKinney is on a tear of late. After going six games without an RBI, the 20-year-old has at least one in each of his last five games. Over the brief stretch, he is 6-for-17 with two homers, a triple, and a two doubles, five runs scored, and nine RBI. He has only struck out once and has drawn three walks. SUCCESS FOR SKULINA: Right-handed starter Tyler Skulina entered Sunday s contest with an 0-2 record and a 7.07 ERA, but pitched one of the gems of the season. In an efficient 68 pitches, Skulina struck out a career-high eight batters, most by any Pelicans pitcher in an outing this year, across six shutout innings for his second win. For his efforts, he earned Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, the first for a Pelicans pitcher since August 2013, when Alec Asher took the honors. RAK N EM UP: Seemingly out of nowhere, Pelicans reliever WHY WON T YOU GO HOME BALL: Jasvir Rakkar is now tied for third in the league in saves with four. Starting the year in South Bend, the righty didn t even arrive to Myrtle Beach until late April, making his first appearance for the Birds on April 21. He has saves in each of his last three outings, all in the last five days. PLAYER ONE National Anthem... John Narramore Color Guard... None Giant Flag...Fans Field of Dreams... Oddly, the Pelicans have hit nine of their 11 home runs on the road but have allowed nine of their 11 home runs given up at home. Wes Darvill clubbed the first Pelicans home run since Opening Night on Wednesday, when he tied the game in the first on a solo blast to right field. THE MAGIC BASKET INGREDIENT: The 11 Pelicans home runs have come in nine games, and the Pelicans have won all nine games in which they have homered. In games in which the club has allowed a home run, it is just 4-5. NO REST FOR THE WEARY: Twenty-six games into the season, only one Pelicans players has suited up in every game (and every inning) on the diamond: that s third baseman JEIMER CANDELARIO. He hasn t even DH d a game either. Trey Michalczewski and Keenyn Walker of Winston-Salem are the only other two players in the league who have played every inning offensively and defensively in the league. FB: 92-96, T-98 CV: Upper 70s CH: Mid 80s ABOUT DUANE With some scouts suspecting that Underwood might go in the first round out of high school, the fireballer fell to the Cubs in the second round, where he was selected 67th overall out of Alan C. Pope High School in East Cobb, Georgia, where the baseball team is known as the Greyhounds. He passed up a committment to play baseball for the University of Georgia. Duane enters the season ranked as the organization s 10th-best prospect by Baseball America entering the 2015 season (up from 17th-best in 2014) and eighth-best according to MLBPipline.com s Prospect watch. Baseball America also rated Underwood s fastball as the best in the Cubs system in their Best Tools. Teammates say he could crush a pizza in his first year of pro ball and got the nickname Chunky Butter. This past offseason, he told Gordon Wittenmye of the Chicago Sun Times: I had a little weight gain last year...i took [the nickname] as motivation. Nobody wants to be called Chunky Butter. So Underwood did something about it after a couple stern talks with team officials getting with a nutritionist, one of the organization s trainers and dropping almost 30 pounds. The difference I saw in Duane this year (2014) was his commitment to his work and his commitment to the game of baseball and totally understanding that he s got to buy all in, manager Mark Johnson said last year. And he did that this year. He s still got a long way to go, but he made some huge strides this year with the way he handled himself on the field and off the field with his nutrition and the way he handled himself his composure on the mound.
