Pay attetio to prevetio to keep your ski healthy ad avoid the log-term health hazards of too much su exposure. Stayig hydrated may seem like a straightforward propositio: you get thirsty, you drik. However, particularly for seiors, it is ot always this simple. Seiors are at a higher risk for dehydratio tha youger adults. I fact, oe study showed that up to 48 percet of seiors were dehydrated upo admissio to the emergecy departmet for other issues. Very ofte it is ot eve obvious that the seior is chroically dehydrated because he or she may ot show ay cliical symptoms, such as icreased thirst, dry mouth, dizziess, weakess, headache, costipatio, or fatigue. Why are seiors at a higher risk? May factors come ito play. For starters, as people age, the water cotet of their bodies dimiishes. Older adults also do ot feel thirst like youger adults: their thirst sigals are ot as active. Other reasos iclude the followig: Seiors may be takig diuretic medicatios for certai coditios that may rid the body of salt ad water. They may itetioally limit fluid itake because of icotiece or embarrassmet over havig to use the bathroom too ofte. They may have mobility issues that prevet them from gettig up ad gettig somethig to drik, ad they may be too embarrassed to ask for help. They may have chroic coditios, such as diabetes, that put them at a higher risk for dehydratio. Seiors with demetia may ot remember to drik. The impacts of dehydratio ca be severe. Dehydratio ca affect the way the body metabolizes medicatios, makig them less effective. This ca be a critical problem for those who deped o those medicatios for their health ad wellbeig. Dehydratio ca also exacerbate other medical coditios, cause kidey stoes ad uriary tract ifectios, compromise the immue system, cause delirium, impair cogitio ad memory, cause weight loss, ad icrease the risk of death. Frieds, family, ad caregivers ca help seiors stay hydrated through costat moitorig. Typically, a adult should get about 2,000 milliliters of fluids a day, which is about eight 8-ouce cups of water. Fluid itake, though, ca come from food sources, such as soups or fruits ad vegetables with a high water cotet, such as cucumbers, raw celery, raw tomatoes, ad melos. Other ways to esure seiors are gettig a adequate amout of fluids iclude regularly offerig beverages that the seior likes, esurig that water is withi reach all day so the seior does ot eed to ask for it, providig cups with hadles or straws to help seiors who have physical limitatios, offerig smaller beverages more frequetly so it does ot seem overwhelmig to fiish a servig, ad miimizig caffeiated or sugary beverages sice too much of either caffeie or sugar ca actually icrease dehydratio. Hirig a professioal caregiver who is familiar with the eeds of seiors ca also help. He struggled to deal with the fight club metality at the jail, ad suffered both medical ad emotioal issues which could ot be adequately treated while he was icarcerated. But the, he etered a 28 day drug ad alcohol rehabilitatio program at Friedship House where he was able to lear about how his use of alcohol cotributed to his difficulty cotrollig his illess. People were fightig there too, says Kevi. The differece is they were ot fightig agaist each other for territory like at the jail; they were fightig agaist their addictios. That is very differet. I leared a lot ad the program worked for me, but what really worked was the support I got whe I got out. Previously I was i a Toyota SUV ad there was a cocert settig up o the frot stretch, so it was t the total experiece. This time, driver Chad Little really let loose ad the tires were squealig goig ito the corers. It was quite impressive. This time I actually thought to record it o video o my camera. It was pretty awesome. I had to leave the NASCAR race a little early o Suday because oce agai, I am ivolved i the Village Players summer productio ad our productio week started o Suday. Ad you ca do so by maitaiig adequate life isurace, which ca help provide your family with the fiacial resources ecessary to meet critical expeses such as mortgage paymets, college tuitio, ad so o should you pass away prematurely. But what type of isurace should you purchase? There s o oe right aswer for everyoe, but by kowig some of the basics of differet polices ad how they relate to your specific eeds, you ca make a iformed decisio. As its ame suggests, term isurace is desiged to last for a specific time period, such as five, 10 or 20 years. You pay the premiums ad you get a death beefit that is, the beeficiaries of your policy will collect the moey whe you pass away. Why is permaet isurace more costly tha term? Because, with permaet isurace, your premiums do t just get you a death beefit they also provide you with the potetial opportuity to build cash value. Some types of permaet isurace may pay you a fixed rate of retur, while other policies offer you the chace to put moey ito accouts similar to ivestmets available through the fiacial markets. These variable accouts will fluctuate i value more tha a fixedrate policy, so you will eed to take your risk tolerace ito accout whe choosig amog the available permaet isurace choices. Permaet isurace may be suitable if you wat to esure a guarateed death beefit for life, rather tha just for a certai time period. Permaet isurace may also be the right choice if you have a high et worth ad are seekig tax-advataged ways of trasferrig wealth. Still, you may have heard that you might be better off by buyig term ad ivestig the differece that is, pay the less costly premiums for term isurace ad use the savigs to ivest i the fiacial markets. However, this strategy assumes you will ivest the savigs rather tha sped them, ad it also assumes you will receive a ivestmet retur greater tha the growth potetial you receive from permaet isurace. Both assumptios are just that: assumptios, ot guaratees. If you are cosiderig the buy term ad ivest the differece route, you will eed both a cosistet ivestmet disciplie ad a willigess to take a greater risk with your moey, i hopes of higher returs.
