The Redhawks will face two teams, BYU and Oklahoma State, who are receiving votes in the preseason ESPN/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25. SU opens the tournament and the season against BYU on Friday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. PT before facing Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. PT that afternoon. On Saturday, Feb. 9, they face Southern Utah at 10 a.m. PT and Utah at 3 p.m. PT They wrap up the weekend with a contest vs. Weber State on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. PT. Scouting BYU: The Cougars finished overall last season and first in the Western Athletic Conference (!5-4) in their only season in the league. BYU and Seattle U switched conferences, as BYU is now a member of the Pacific Coast 2013 Redhawk softball Weekly Release #1 SEATTLE U opens season at red desert classic BYU Friday, Feb a.m. Oklahoma St. Friday, Feb. 8 3 p.m. Southern Utah Saturday, Feb a.m. Utah Saturday, Feb. 9 3 p.m. Weber State Sunday, Feb a.m. Facebook: Seattle U Athletics Softball Conference. Their postseason record last year was 2-2, with their final game a loss to Oregon, 4-1. The Cougars have 14 returning letterwinners and six returning starters, as well as five newcomers. Delaney Willard started 57 of 60 games for the Cougars last season, batting a team high.418, also recording 44 runs, 71 hits, 17 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, and 88 RBIs. Two of their three pitchers had a sub-3.00 ERA, with Tori Almond leading the way with a 2.00 ERA and a 20-4 record in 23 starts and 36 appearances. Gordon Eakin leads the team in his 10th season as head coach, with a all-time career record. Last Time Out: Seattle U last faced BYU on Apr. 2, 2011, at the UNLV Pre-Conference Roundup in Las Vegas. Now heading into his tenth season at the helm of the program, Powers hopes to continue to lead the program toward the pinnacle of NCAA Division I softball. In 2012, the Redhawks finished fifth in the PCSC Mountain Division and with a overall record. However, several of Powers key players received recognition for their contribution to the team. Sarah Petosa was named College Sports Madness PCSC Second-Team All-Conference, as well as First-Team PCSC All-Mountain Division. Bubba Morrow was also named First-Team All-Division, and Mandie Sugita, Brianna Guerrero, and Lisa Maulden were named Second-Team All-Division. In 2009, the Redhawks won the Division I Independent Softball Tournament with a 10-9 victory over South Dakota in their first year as a Division I program. The year before, Powers led his team to their first GNAC Conference title and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. His team also accumulated the most wins in school history with an 18-6 conference record and an overall record of In 2007, Powers saw his team just one win away from reaching the NCAA Division II Women s College World Series. It was the furthest that the program had ever advanced. Seattle single-handedly knocked out top-seeded, Humboldt State, ranked No. 3 in the nation from the regional by defeating them twice. Seattle also earned wins against #25 Hawaii-Hilo and #6 Stanislaus State. With their great play at the regional, Seattle finished ranked #18 in the country, their highest ranking ever. Not only did he lead the Redhawks to second-place finishes in the GNAC in each of his first three seasons with the program, the Redhawks also placed third in the NCAA Division II West Region in their first trip to the postseason in 2004 and won 29 games along the way. For his efforts in leading Seattle to its best conference finish and highest win total in school history that year, Powers was named GNAC Coach of the Year. A Seattle native, Powers served as the head coach of the Lindbergh High School softball program for three seasons before coming to Seattle University. Powers had also competed in men s fastpitch as a catcher for eight years and a pitcher for seven years. Powers began playing men s fastpitch in the Greater Puget Sound League in As a prep, he lettered four years on the Rainier Beach High School baseball team, helping them to a Metro League title in Powers graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1994 with a bachelor s degree in business administration. Powers currently lives in Burien with his wife Sunny, their daughter Lauren Taylor, 13, son Daniel Austin, 11, daughter Jordan Rae, 8, and son Dylan, 5. last season, including 8-16 in Big-12 Conference play. Shelby Davis recorded a team-high.310 average, recording 17 runs on 44 hits, two doubles, two triples, and six RBIs. Kat Espinosa started 21 games and had a team high 2.38 ERA and 2013 Redhawk softball a record. Rich Wieligman enters his seventh season at the helm of the Cowgirl program and led OSU to its seventh Women s College World Series appearance in Last Time Out: This will be the 4

5 first ever meeting between Oklahoma State and Seattle U. Scouting Southern Utah: Southern Utah finished 2012 with a record and a 15-9 summit league record. Mikkel Griffin led the Thunderbirds with a.404 average, starting all 54 games, and also recording 43 runs on 65 hits, as well as 12 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, and 35 RBIs. Kyle Magnusson leads the team in his third season as head coach. In his first season (2011), he led the team to a No. 4 seed and the conference championships, as well as a 25- win season, more than doubling their winning total from the previous year. Last Time Out: Two seasons ago, the Redhawks played Southern Utah twice at the Boise State Tournament, once each day on Mar. 5-6, Southern Utah won both contests, in the first, and 8-7 in eight innings in the second. Scouting Utah: Last season, Utah finished overall and 2-22 in conference play in their first season in the Pac-12. They were led by Taylor Austin, who batted a.556, follwed by Whitney Holm who started all 56 games, batting a.381. In the circle, Generra Nielson recorded a team-leading 3.46 ERA as well as a record in 48 appearances. They have seven returning starters, 13 returning letterwinners, and six newcomers for In her fifth season, head coach Amy Hogue has a (.493) record at Utah and a (.598) overall career coaching record. Last Time Out: Seattle U last faced Utah on Saturday Feb. 13, also at the Red Desert Classic. The Utes came away with the 9-1 victory. Scouting Weber State: Weber State finished last season with a overall record and a PCSC record, as they were one of SU s conference foes in Lynds Minnich started all 53 games for the season with a team-high.396 average, also recording 46 runs on 59 hits, five doubles, three triples, 15 home runs, and 49 RBIs. Sarah Clark led all pitchers with a 3.53 ERA and a record. Tina Johnson enters her fifth season as head coach and restarted the program in 2008 after it was dropped in Last Time Out: Weber State and Seattle U were both part of the same conference (Pacific Coast Softball Conference) last season, with the Redhawks going 1-3 over the four game series on Apr. 6-7, Weber State won the first, third, and fourth games by scores of 5-4, 10-6, and 8-2 respectively, but SU dominated in game two, 19-0, in five innings. Seattle U Joins the WAC: On July 1, 2012, 17 of Seattle U s 20 sports found a conference home, joining the Western Athletic Conference. The WAC is the sixth-oldest of the nation s 11 FBS (Division I-A) conferences Redhawk softball SU is one of 10 full members of the conference alongside current members Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State, as well as fellow newcomers Denver, UT Arlington, UTSA, and Texas State. The WAC softball tournament will take place from May 8-11 in Ruston, Louisiana with the top six of eight teams qualifying for the tournament. The team s first conference weekend will be at UT Arlington on Mar , and first home conference weekend will be Mar as they host Texas State. NCAA Division I: After 33 years since Seattle U last competed in a Division I conference, and after four years of NCAA Division I reclassification, SU returned to full NCAA Division I membership in August The Redhawks will now compete for conference championships and will be eligible for automatic bids to the NCAA tournament. New and Improved: Seattle University played their last home contests at the old Logan Field versus North Dakota on Mar. 9, 2012 before reconstruction began in late March The team played their first two home doubleheaders at Logan Field this season and played their two home PCSC series, Apr versus Utah Valley, and Apr versus Northern Colorado at the Federal Way National Little League Fields in Federal Way, Wash. The new Logan Field was completed in September 2012, with a dedication ceremony tak- 5

Looking Back at 2012: As Seattle U softball said goodbye to the 2012 season, they also said goodbye to the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, as well as to their old home, Logan Field. Over the summer, Seattle U joined the Western Athletic Conference and Logan Field at Seattle University Park was completely renovated. Sarah Petosa was named to the College Sports Madness PCSC Second-Team All-Conference. Petosa started 44 of 45 games for Seattle U and finished the season with a team-high.365 average, 54 hits, 40.6 percent on-base percentage, and 10 out of 10 successful stolen base attempts. Petosa was also one of three outfielders named to the PCSC All-Mounta Division First Team and Bubba Morrow represented the First Team at the catcher position. Morrow finished fourth on the team with a.293 average, starting all 45 games during her freshman season, and ranked third on the team in runs (18), second in hits (39), third in doubles (6), and first in RBIs (31) and home runs (6). Mandie Sugita was one of three Mountain Division pitchers named to the Second Team. Sugita started 12 games with 29 appearances, as well as five complete games, two shutouts, and two saves in the circle. At the plate, she scored seven runs on six hits, also recording one double and 11 RBIs, and finished second on the team in home runs (3). Brianna Guerrero represented the third base position on the Second Team, finishing third on the team with a.313 average, starting 31 of 41 games played, and recording 17 runs on 30 hits, as well as five doubles, and 12 RBIs. Lisa Maulden was named to the Second Team for the first base position, finishing her freshman campaign with a.279 average, starting 43 games for the Redhawks. She led the team in runs (21), finished second in RBIs (20), tied for second in doubles (7), and tied for third in home runs (2). Jessica Ulrich was named the PCSC Mountain Division Pitcher of the Week on Apr. 17 for her performance in the team s three victories over Utah Valley on Apr Ulrich earned two wins and recorded a 2.92 ERA (12.0 IP, 5 ER) in two starts. She notched her second complete game shutout of the season in the Redhawks 2-0 win in the series opener on Apr. 14, allowing only five hits. In the series finale, she earned the win in the team s 7-6 victory, striking out three. On the season, at that time, Ulrich was 6-8 with a 4.43 ERA (79.0 IP, 50 ER). 6

7 SEASON PREVIEW Seattle University softball looks forward to their first season in the Western Athletic Conference, as well as their first regular season since the completion of their newly renovated home field. They will hit the ground running, as they face tough non-conference competition to prepare them for their conference schedule. The team will open the season at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah on Feb They will face BYU, Oklahoma State, Southern Utah, Utah, and Weber State this first weekend. They will then face UNLV, Utah, UCLA, Louisiana Monroe, and Oregon State at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas the following weekend, Feb In the first two weeks, we play four Pac-12 games, said head coach Dan Powers. We play Utah, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon State, and we play Oregon at the end of the year. So we re playing almost half the Pac-12 in our non-conference schedule, which should prep us very well for the WAC Tournament and conference play. We also play BYU and Oklahoma State, as well, early in the season. We have our work cut out for us. The Redhawks host Northwest University for a doubleheader on Feb. 23 before officially opening the field under the lights vs. Washington on Feb. 27. We re excited to host a top-20 team at our place for the first time in history. The field has played well all fall and winter, and under the lights should be a very exciting event for fans. The UC Santa Barbara Invitational will kick off the month of March, as the Redhawks will face South Dakota State and UCSB on Mar. 1-3, before returning home to host Ohio and Bradley on Mar. 7. The Redhawks will remain close to home for the UW Spring Classic on Mar as they face New Mexico, Ohio, Yale, and Washington during the cross-town tournament. Yale will remain in town for a doubleheader at Logan Field on Mar. 12. SU will play two games each vs. Loyola Marymount and Cal State Northridge at the Cal State Northridge Invitational on Mar before beginning conference play. They will also play two non-conference doubleheaders in the middle of their conference schedule, vs. Portland State on Apr. 10 and at Oregon on May 1. In WAC play, the Redhawks, who were picked to finish eighth in the conference, will host Texas State (Mar ), Utah State (Apr ), and Louisiana Tech (May 3-4), and will travel to face UT Arlington (Mar ), San Jose State (Apr. 5-6), UTSA (Apr ), and New Mexico State (Apr ). Texas State was chosen as the preseason No. 1 by the WAC s eight softball head coaches Redhawk softball Playing Texas State at home, for us, is huge. As far as the rest of the teams go, we split with UTSA last season, and we ve played Utah State once and it was a one run game. We have not yet played New Mexico State, UT Arlington, or Louisiana Tech. It s a clean slate and there is only one true favorite. Everybody else is pretty close and it s going to be a fight to the finish. The Redhawks are also excited to play their first regular season on their newly renovated home field, Logan Field at Seattle University Park, which underwent a significant transformation during spring and summer They have been able to practice earlier and more frequently outside on their home field this season, and broke in their new home with an Alumni Game during fall With the travel that we re doing for conference this year, having more home games is critical. We don t want to be on the road 85 percent of the time, which could have been the case if we didn t have the new Logan Field this year. We ve got a full schedule at 55 games this season, I believe we re playing almost 20 games at home, and that s the most we ve ever had since I ve been there. Several of last year s leaders, including Sarah Petosa (Federal Way, Wash.), Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.), Allegra Wilde (Kennewick, Wash.), and Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) have even improved over the offseason and will continue to pro- 7

8 vide crucial leadership for the team. Petosa led the Redhawks in hitting (.365), starting 44 of 45 games, as well as total hits (54). Morrow led the team with six home runs and 31 RBIs as a freshman in 2012, and won the starting catcher role early in the season, starting all 45 games. Petosa and Morrow were also named to the 2013 Preseason Softball All-WAC team, as decided by the conference s eight head coaches. Bubba has taken more of a leadership role behind the plate. With her freshman year under her belt, she has more confidence. She threw out every runner that tried to run on her during the fall. Sarah is getting better every day, her confidence shows in her swing, and she s starting to lead more in the outfield. Allegra, as a senior, wants to go out on top. She s kind of the vocal leader in the infield. Allegra and Jenny give us a great double play combo, as well as the best range up the middle we ve had in years. Coach Powers also highlighted a few players who have significantly improved during the summer and fall and will become more crucial to the team s success in One of these, Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.), led the team in runs (21) and finished second in RBIs (20) as a freshman last season. Brianna Guerrero (Buena Park, Calif.) put in a lot of work in the offseason in the weight room and it s already showing. She s hitting with a lot more power than she has in the past and we re expecting big numbers from her. Lisa and Erin Crowley (Kent, Wash.) are also looking much better. We were really excited about our sophomore class when we recruited them a couple years ago, but they re starting to come into their own, and are becoming a very solid foundation for our team in the future. I also think Richelle Ashburn (Post Falls, Idaho) has been overlooked, because her stats haven t always been great, but she s thrown some great games in the past against some very good teams. I think she s going to get double digit wins this year. Brittney Lott (Tacoma, Wash.), Hayley Beckstrom (Maple Valley, Wash.), and Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) join the team this season as freshman, and the coaching staff is confident they will compete for playing time almost immediately. All three of the freshmen are competing and I wouldn t be surprised if they got early playing time this season. Brittney is pushing Lisa and it s been a good competition all fall and winter. Isabella has come back after missing the entire fall with a concussion, and is close to starting very soon. We moved Haley from middle infield to catcher, because we had that need, and she s hitting the ball a ton. All three will help our team this year Redhawk softball The Redhawks will face three ESPN/USA Softball preseason top-20 teams this season, as well as three others who are receiving votes in the preseason poll. With a new conference and a new field, 2013 will prove to be an exciting year in Seattle U softball. Powers puts it simply, They re all ready to go and so are we. 8
