Fairleigh Dickinson was picked to finish sixth in the Northeast Conference prior to the start of the season. Earlier this season, junior Megan Reiner was named Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week for allowing no runs, striking out 12, and holding all opponents to three hits at the Spartan Clash at Norfolk State. Scouting San Diego (8-10): The Toreros went 4-1 last weekend at the Highlander Classic in Riverside, Calif., topping Utah State, UC Riverside (twice), and Idaho State and are set to host Weber State for a doubleheader on Mar. 13 prior to this weekend s tournament. Sophomore Mary Grabowski was named WCC Player of the Week, announced on Mar. 10, hitting.389 with a team-high six RBI last weekend. For the season, Grabowski leads the team in RBI (11) and is second in runs (seven), total bases (25), average (.333), slugging percentage (.596), and on-base percentage (.380). Now heading into his 11th season at the helm of the program, Powers hopes to continue to lead the program toward the pinnacle of NCAA Division I softball. The team has a newly renovated on-campus home, Logan Field, which opened in fall In 2012, the Redhawks finished fifth in the PCSC Mountain Division and with a overall record. However, several of Powers key players received recognition for their contribution to the team. Sarah Petosa was named College Sports Madness PCSC Second- Team All-Conference, as well as First-Team PCSC All-Mountain Division. Bubba Morrow was also named First-Team All-Division, and Mandie Sugita, Brianna Guerrero, and Lisa Maulden were named Second-Team All-Division. In 2009, the Redhawks won the Division I Independent Softball Tournament with a 10-9 victory over South Dakota in their first year as a Division I program. The year before, Powers led his team to their first GNAC Conference title and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. His team also accumulated the most wins in school history with an 18-6 conference record and an overall record of In 2007, Powers saw his team just one win away from reaching the NCAA Division II Women s College World Series, the furthest that the program had ever advanced. Seattle single-handedly knocked out top-seeded, Humboldt State, ranked No. 3 in the nation from the regional by defeating them twice. Seattle also earned wins against #25 Hawaii- Hilo and #6 Stanislaus State. With their great play at the regional, Seattle finished ranked #18 in the country, their highest ranking ever. Not only did he lead the Redhawks to second-place finishes in the GNAC in each of his first three seasons with the program, the Redhawks also placed third in the NCAA Division II West Region in their first trip to the postseason in 2004 and won 29 games along the way. For his efforts in leading Seattle to its best conference finish and highest win total in school history that year, Powers was named GNAC Coach of the Year. A Seattle native, Powers served as the head coach of the Lindbergh High School softball program for three seasons before coming to Seattle University. Powers had also competed in men s fastpitch as a catcher for eight years and a pitcher for seven years. Powers began playing men s fastpitch in the Greater Puget Sound League in As a prep, he lettered four years on the Rainier Beach High School baseball team, helping them to a Metro League title in Powers graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1994 with a bachelor s degree in business administration. Powers currently lives in Burien with his wife Sunny, their daughter Lauren Taylor, son Daniel Austin, daughter Jordan Rae, and son Dylan. was named GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week after starting all four games at third base at the Amy S. Harrison Classic. Hurst also recorded a run in the team s 10-1 five-inning victory over LMU on Feb. 22 and an RBI in the 3-1 win vs. host UC Riverside on Feb. 23. SU Picked to Finish Second in WAC: In a vote of the league s six head coaches, SU was picked to finish second in the league in 2014, while New Mexico State earned the top spot. Lindsay Davis was named Preseason WAC Freshman of the Year while Dan Powers was named Preseason WAC Coach of the Year. Milestone Moment: Head coach Dan Powers recorded his 250th career win in his 500th career game on Feb. 16, 2013 vs. Toledo to close out the Easton Desert Classic.
