1 2013 KLONDIKE DERBY Northwest Hills District, CRC BSA February 22-24, 2013 (2 nights of optional camping-fri + Sat) Mountain Lake Bible Camp 64 Mountain Lake Road New Preston, CT Northwest Hills 2012 Klondike Derby Polynesian Luau Page: 1

2 Theme: The theme is a Polynesian Luau. Our mascot and guest is Yuri the yeti. Yuri loves palm trees, Hawaiian shirts and especially pineapple! Unfortunately Yuri has spent most of his life in the wooded outskirts of Siberia and Northern Canada, with occasional trips to the Himalayas to see family. Like many of us, Yuri yearns for what he cannot have, a real island vacation. Warm weather is just not good for his health. Yuri is here to help the Scouts and enjoy the only kind of Tiki Party that he can (a frozen New England one)! If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse, or photo, or autograph from our friend Yuri! Dates: Friday to Sunday February th, 2013 There are up to 2 nights of optional cold weather winter camping. Troops that choose to camp should have experience with and be prepared for sub-freezing camping. Awards and Scoring: There will be a maximum of 50 points at each station, with the majority of points being directed toward the event at that station. A scorecard will be handed to each patrol leader at check-in. This is a record of your points during the Klondike Derby, it will be specially marked at each station for record of having participated, and it is your responsibility to keep this with you at all times. Scorecards will be turned in to headquarters (see schedule). Ribbons will be awarded based upon patrol performance. 5 Klondike Derby Events 1) Coconut Cannon Slingshot a. Each patrol is to build a cannon size slingshot based on these maximum dimensions Cannon Barrel: Maximum 4 long with a maximum Cannon Diameter 12 Ammo: Cannon should be designed to fire wiffle balls. Ammo will be provided at the station. DO NOT bring wiffle balls with you. Slingshot can be either internal or external to the barrel. External: Slingshot posts can be 12 Maximum off of barrel. Posts cannot extend beyond the front of the barrel. The posts can go up but not out. Internal: Ball is shot from inside the cannon Bungee Cord/Medical Cord: Slingshot must use bungee/medical cord. Pressurized air cannons are not allowed. (No potato guns). Pullback: Loaded slingshot cannot be pulled back beyond the back of the barrel. Mounting: Slingshot must be mounted to and shot from the sled. Safety: Slingshot can only be shot at the Coconut Cannon Station with the supplied ammo. Any shooting outside of this station will result in the elimination of the Coconut Cannon Station points and possible disqualification from the entire event. Note: Suggested materials for the cannon barrel include cardboard cement pier form tube (Sonatube), plastic sewer pipe, A log or board (external fire). Use your imagination in designing this. Scoring: Cannons will be scored for accuracy, distance and design. Northwest Hills 2012 Klondike Derby Polynesian Luau Page: 5

6 2) Sling the Snow Snake- See Attachment- Each Patrol will need to provide their own Snake Event Description Scouts throw a six to seven foot long hand crafted stick from a starting line into a hard packed snow or ice trough. Javelin thrown snakes and snakes not gliding in trough are disqualified. Station will be judge on both distance and patrol spirited design. Construction Traditional Method. The snake is a five - seven foot long pole of hardwood, about 1 1/2 inches high at the 2 to 4 inch long head that tapers down to a half-inch diameter at the tail. There is a smooth notch for a finger at the end of the stick. The head of this stick is carved in the shape of a snake, with eyes and a mouth. The underside of the head should curve up like a ski. The eyes of the snake where often weighted. The rounded head allows the snake to pass easily over the snow. The bottom is rounded, and the top, behind the head, is flat. Decorations and carvings should be done on the non-sliding surfaces. Adapted method (See Diagram Below). Snake is made from a 1 to 2 inch wood stick between 5 to 7 feet long. Cut off a piece of one end of the stick on an angle to become the head of the snake. Carve or shape the snake with a wood rasp and sand paper. Be careful not to make the top to heavy. Paint and decorate the snake. Polyurethane, Gloss alkyd or latex paints all work well. Use several coats of auto wax for a highly polished surface. The Trough is made by dragging a smooth- barked 10 inch diameter log lengthwise through the snow packing it firmly and removing any protruding objects. The track should be 100 to 150 yards long. Setup wooden stakes at 100 intervals along one side of trough and label distances from start line. Use a 100 vinyl measuring tape to measure between stakes. If sub freezing conditions exist then trough can be hand sprayed with water an hour before competition. Throwing a snow snake effectively requires both strength and accuracy. The arm movement is a cross between a baseball side-arm pitch and a bowling delivery. With one finger on the tail of the snake and the other hand balancing the forward portion of the stick, the player leans toward the ground (see illustration) before taking a few steps toward the prepared track. With a flick of the arm and wrist, the player sends the stick down the track. Each person has two attempts to throw the snake. Northwest Hills 2012 Klondike Derby Polynesian Luau Page: 6

7 3) Fire Starting-This will be a cold weather fire starting challenge. Patrol needs to bring a supply of wood and any fire starters. 4) Stay off the Lava- This event will require the patrol to balance their sled on a platform teetering on a log. 5) Over or Up Mt. Koolau -A patrol musher, a dog sled, a pack of patrol huskies, and all provisions, race against time. The race begins with the front of the sled at the start line and ends when the front of the sled crosses the finish line. This may be a level course, a course with obstacles, a race up hill or maybe even over a wall. 6) Big Foot Dash- Scouts wearing homemade snowshoes/bigfoot sprint a 4x 20-yard relay. One pair is swapped between all patrol members. EACH PATROL WILL NEED A PAIR OF HOMEMADE SNOWSHOES! Materials of construction can be plywood, heavy cardboard, or plastic. The snowshoes need to be attached to boots with some type of homemade binding. Quick exchange of the snowshoes is the key to success with this event. Snowshoes should be the approximate size of a skateboard deck (8 inches by 24 inches). Don t get too carried away with the design. At the end of this document is a reprint of how to make a pair of snowshoes from Boys Life. Key for the race is to create an easy binding system that will allow the scouts to rapidly exchange the snowshoes between racers. 7) Ice Rescue (First Aid)-Scouts must simulate and ice reach rescue and treat a victim for exposure to freezing water. 8) Toss the Pineapple (aka "Panning for Gold") toss a pineapple over a 10-12ft high line with a tarp and catch it in the tarp. The Pineapple and Tarp will be provided by Klondike Staff. 9) Yeti Bag (Bear Bag)- Yuri the Yeti loves to abscond with scouts food. To keep your food safe you must throw a rope over a suspended limb 16 feet off the ground. Tie the rope to a yeti bag. Haul it into the air and tie it off to a tree. Each Patrol must provide their own yeti bag and rope. 10) Outrigger Canoe Walk (Smooshboard)-Patrol members right feet are tied to one long 2x4; left feet to another 2x4. Patrol is timed in walking a course on flat ground. Boards and binding provided by Klondike Staff. 11) Rabbit Snare A wilderness survival station were the patrol has to set up a working ground snare trap. (Rabbit trap). The patrol gets a few opportunities to take a stuffed rabbit which is attached via cord to a pole and "walk it through" a snare that they have set up. Points received if the trap catches the stuffed toy. The station master would supply all snare supplies, cord (picture frame wire), flexible saplings, etc The station would also discuss the tricks of setting up a snare and capturing a rabbit. (Set it at night, they are nocturnal). Points if the patrol uses a timber hitch in the snare. The picture is taken from the July 1968 Boy s Life.
