1 AUTUMN 2011 NEWSLETTER Deveron Branch of the Pony Club Hello! We have enjoyed an excellent summer holiday and I don t know about you guys, but it all seemed to pass so quickly so let s kick-off with a few moments: Camp was amazing and very busy. We ve never handed out so many badges and test certificates, so a MASSIVE well done to you all. Thanks to Judy for teaching us all how to float off a horse rather than fall! Then we hot-footed to Interbranch with 16 competitors. We suffered extremes of weather and ground conditions but we held our own and there were some personal bests and our fair share of ribbons too. Eleanor and Sally did us proud by winning the Intermediate and Novice Eventing section respectively you rock guys! Sally then excelled herself by coming third at the PC Championships in Cheshire.. now that is seriously good. Our mini s and juniors have had a ball too. Not only were they superstars at camp but they took on Syd and Wilma s new cross country course at the Mini ODE. Then it was off to Grassroots with two teams who came 2nd and 6th in the senior test! There have been a few changes on our committee so check out the details on the right and make sure you are familiar with your committee. These zealous adults give an amazing amount of time and effort to our club and quite frankly, without them, things just wouldn t get done. By now you ve probably guessed that I have been given the huge honour of becoming your new DC. Although officially for the moment I m a DC (Acting). It s an exciting time for Deveron: Wilma has put so much time and effort into our branch over the past two year. Thanks Wilma, for everything you ve done it is much appreciated by us all, and thanks for deciding to stay with us as our new Chief Instructor don t know about you, but even I m going to have a white hankie in my grooming kit! As you know we also said goodbye to Mary our wonderful Chief Instructor. Mary has been on the Deveron PC committee for 12 years... that s some commitment and there aren t words enough to express our gratitude Mary, you are a star! Finally, we have some great new ideas and we will be approaching some age groups to get you guys together to see what you want from your club. So watch this space! A couple of new members to mention welcome to Lauren, Ryan, Eve and Skye it s great to have you as part of our Branch and we re looking forward to getting to know you and your ponies! Happy riding! Believe you can and you re halfway there... 2 YESTERDAY S NEWS... more branches.pcuk.org/deveron/ INTERBRANCH It was camp all over again. Our team members blasted down the road to Strathallan in Perthshire to compete at Area Interbranch. All 16 superstars were scattered in different yards due to no onsite stabling, but this did not deter them one bit! Our Show Jumping teams kicked off on what was probably the hottest day of the year. Out of 100 novice riders overall only 9 had double clears and well done to Sally who got one of them. Eventing was not so hot - it rained all day. The show jumping arena resembled a skating rink, but this did not deter everyone. The cross country presented a few challenges but rode well, while some riders had trouble at the hanging log, others flew the course with some spectacular results - well done to Sally and Eleanor for winning the novice and intermediate classes respectively and to Lottie, Robyn and Aimee for going clear. Maybe the lucky charms from Lucy s mum helped them all on the day! See all the results on our website at branches.pcuk.org/deveron/. PODIUM FINISH FOR SALLY Sally Mair and Rico came 3rd overall in the 2011 Novice Eventing Championships in Cheshire. A double clear in the show jumping and cross country meant that she had no penalties to add to her dressage score of This is an incredible result for Sally and Rico congratulations! GRASSROOTS Our Diamonds and Divas represented Deveron at the Area 1 Grassroots three-phase competition this year. This year our girls, all under 12, competed against 15 and 16 year olds in the senior event. Both teams were fantastically turned out and rode lovely dressage tests our Divas got the highest score on the day. Our Divas Anna, Haydn, Abby and Tilly, finished 2nd overall. While Diamonds Sway, Nikki, Alannah and Rachel came 6th. Well done girls! And we will have to wait and see who won the overall trophy for the highest combined score which will be presented at the Christmas Ceilidh in November. MINI ONE DAY EVENT Once again, ours minis had their one day event at Wilma s. What a fantastic opportunity for our younger members. Syd s cross country cross was both challenging and rewarding - and this year introduced a timed slip rail. The weather was good to everyone, save for a sharp shower mid-morning. And well done to everyone for completing all three phases - See how they all got on at branches.pcuk.org/deveron/

3 UP AND COMING... HORSE & PONY CARE CHAMPIONSHIPS Well done to Rebekah, Stephen and Kathryn who represented Deveron in the Horse and Pony Care Championships. They were the highest placed Scottish team. Deveron will be hosting the area competition at Mid-Knauland in so start practising! AREA TETRATHLON Our tetrathlon girls made their mark at the Gleneagles Area competition. Tara and Lindsay Brown, Nicky and Anna McRae and Judy and Sally Mair represented Deveron in the tri and tet. After the shoot, run and swim, Tara and Nicky were fab grooms for the others competing in the next day s XC. NATIONAL TETRATHLON Sally and Judy Mair were lucky enough to represent Scotland at the Junior UK tetrathlon championships in Milton Keynes. Here s how Judy sums it up: Total teamwork, fantastic friendships, beautifully organised and more than worth all the training and hard work. The Scots boys team blew the rest of the field away with one of them winning overall out of 35 competitors. There were 76 in the girls section making up 15 teams. The Scots again excelled with one of the girls finishing first overall and Sally the second highest placed Scot with an individual 7th place. Sally s team finished a fantastic second whilst my team finished a very respectable 11th and 6th. TRIATHLON SEASON The triathlon season is upon us. Comprising three phases - running, shooting and swimming, it is a great chance for anyone who wants to have a go without the fuss of taking ponies along to a competition. Don t worry if you haven t done it before we can take you through it at our Try Triathlon afternoon on the 10th December at Kinnermit. This initial taster will be followed by a winter of fun at local competitions run by Aberdeenshire and Annan (5th November and 26th December respectively). Also, Scottish tetrathlon is holding a tri camp on 22nd and 23rd October at at Kilgraston School, Bridge of Earn for 12s and under. It s a great opportunity for a grounding of the discipline. POSTAL SHOOTS Run by Scottish Tetrathlon between November and February - cost 5. On entering you are given 12 special targets which need to be completed, at home, over 16 weeks. Targets, once completed, are sent to Scottish tetrathlon for scoring. It is a great way of practising your shooting under pressure without having to go anywhere. And you can do it with your mum, dad, brothers and sisters! PC guns are available for anyone keen to have a go. Speak to Lucy Mair on asap to get started. OPEN SUMMER SHOW 17th September There is something for everyone... Our fun show at Knock on 17th September will be a lot of fun and there ll be something there for everyone from Working Hunter classes, show jumping, novelty classes, games and even TREC - which will be run by TREC Scotland. You ll find an entry form at the back of this newsletter so be sure to get your entries in to Wilma asap. Of course you can enter on the day but remember it will cost more. NORTH CUP Always popular with our members, this year s area event will be hosted by Moray and Nairn on Sunday 25th September at Burgie. Deveron PC doesn t select teams but the highest individual scores from members of our club in each class combine to a team total - that way the North Cup winner is decided. So you need to get your entries in to give Deveron a chance... entry form attached! B TEST Good luck to Kathryn, Stephen, Eleanor and Stephanie who will be taking their B Test on the 18th September. It s a tricky one and we will have our fingers crossed for all of you.

You will never be turned down! RALLY RULES Rallies are the backbone of the Pony Club and we hope to see as many of you as possible at forthcoming dates. All day rallies cost 20 while other rallies cost 10. The split of rally groups is as follows: 11s and under - juniors 12s and over - seniors Please remember when attending rallies there will be a tack and turnout inspection and it is important that not only is your horse/pony correctly dressed but you are too. If anyone is unsure of the correct turnout for rallies then please feel free to contact either Emma or Wilma. At each rally, points are awarded for your tack and turnout and at the parent s night in November a trophy will be awarded to the member with the most points in each age group. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR RALLY CARD FOR SIGNING. SPURS It is imperative that anyone wishing to compete in spurs has their spurs card signed by Emma... it is worth remembering that it is one card per horse. If you ride two horses then you will need two cards. You must carry this and present it at all shows and events. PASSPORTS Under new rules introduced by the Pony Club all members MUST carry their pony/horse passports when travelling to rallies or shows. Please ensure you have yours with you whenever you go out in your trailer/lorry. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

5 Pony Club Games with John McKinnon Games have been part of the Pony Club activities for more that 50 years. Any young rider can take part and have fun at mounted games, all you need is a pony and time to practice. By competing in gymkhanas, open shows and attending rallies you can improve your confidence and pony handling skills. After attending a few Pony Club Games Rallies you will be surprised how quickly your skills improve and rider confidence grows. Practicing what you have learned, will increase your competitiveness. (The fastest ponies do not always win the race.) Pony Club Games is the only competition where riders compete against each other in a race. If you think competing is not for you, you will be surprised how a bit of success can encourage you to train that little bit harder and improve your ability and desire for further success. Pony Club mounted games competitions are for teams of 5 riders and ponies. As you train with your pony and other team members you will learn new games, develop skills, improving speed, but most of all you and your pony will learn the real meaning of being a team member as each parent, rider and pony depend on each other for success. As a bonus you will improve your balance, confidence, fitness, team awareness and discipline and be given the freedom to express and impress... AND HAVE GREAT FUN! Next year we plan to run a proper Gymkhana with games in the summer... if we all start practising now you ll be surprised how far you will get! Autumn laminitis alert... We all know that spring is a dangerous time for laminitis but it is important to remember the second flush of grass in autumn can be just as risky. Laminitis is second only to colic as the most common reason for presenting a horse for veterinary treatment. In a recent study in the UK it was found that over 1 in 10 horses were affected by laminitis with a greater prevalence during times of high grass growth. Work completed in the USA has also found that an overload of lush grass or cereals is the cause of laminitis in more than 50% of the cases reported. Recent research has identified a grass storage carbohydrate called fructan as a possible trigger for laminitis; however the level of fructan in pasture is difficult to estimate, as it varies due to the type of grass and the climatic conditions. The best way of reducing the risk is to follow these simple guidelines; l Restrict access to pasture at high risk times (Spring and Autumn) by strip grazing, grazing ponies with sheep and turning out in a bare paddock. In the case of known laminitics, avoid all grazing. l Turn your horse or pony out at night, as this is when the fructan concentrations are likely to be at their lowest l Feed a high fibre, low starch diet. Choose a feed approved by The Laminitis Trust. l Put your pony on a diet to reduce bodyweight if he is overweight, but do not starve him. l Don t feed high cereal mixes as these can increase the risk of another attack.
