1 Cajun Chronicles Terrebonne January 2016 Camping is one of the most valuable experiences a child can have. It s a learning experience that helps boys and girls appreciate the outdoors, live together as a group, get along with others and appreciate people with different interests and backgrounds. Many 4th, 5th and 6th grade boys and girls participate in 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The camp is held at the LSU AgCenter s Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center, an 80-acre campsite located near Pollock, LA, on Highway 8 about 15 May 30 June 3, 2016 miles northeast of Alexandria. Terrebonne 4-H will be camping May 30-June 3, H members leave on Monday and return on Friday. Transportation is provided to and from camp. If you are interested in attending 4-H summer camp you must complete a Summer Camp Application and return it to the 4-H office. You can get the application from your club leader, the 4-H office or the Terrebonne 4-H website. Applications will be accepted beginning February 1, 2016 through February 19, 2016 Adult Volunteer space is limited. If you are interested, please make a comment on your child s 4-H Camp Application. The 4-H office will contact you if needed. Youth Counselors are needed. 4-H Members 10th 12th grade should complete an application. You can contact Mrs. Cherie if interested. 2 Page 2 CAJUN CHRONICLES Let s Get Creative! Design something made of Duct Tape. There are a variety of colors and prints to begin your masterpiece. Please follow the rules below. Have fun! Rules: 1. All entries are due to the 4-H office by Monday, February 1, Projects should be student created. You CAN NOT duct tape on top of a preexisting item. You may use cardboard, wire, clips, fabric, buckles, etc. 3. Only one entry per 4-H member. Categories: Clothing belts, vest, hats, shoes, etc. Duct Tape Contest School and Office Supplies pencil bags, pencil toppers, desk accessories, etc. Sports and musical equipment guitar, baseball, etc. Other designs that do not fall in any of the above categories. All items will be returned. Ribbons will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in junior (4th 6th grade) and senior (7th 12th grade) divisions. Clover buds will receive participation ribbons. An overall Grand and Reserve Champion will be selected. The form below MUST be completed and attached to your duct tape art. 3 Page 3 NEWSLETTER TITLE 4-H Layers of Love Terrebonne 4-H Members have been doing a great job Igniting change through kind acts of community service. We are encouraging you to continue to make a positive change in our community by participating in our 4-H Layers of Love drive. We are asking each school 4-H club to make one (or more) fleece blanket to donate. The blankets will be donated to children. Follow these simple steps as a club to make a fleece blanket: Supplies: 1 yd of fleece for the top 1 yd of fleece for the bottom 1 pair of scissors 1 popsicle stick or index card straight pins - optional Instructions 1. You will need two pieces of equal size, which will then be tied together with knots. You can use the same fabric for both front and back, or you can choose complimentary or contrasting fabrics for a reversible blanket. 2. Place one piece of fabric face down and one face up. Line them up and trim the edges so that both pieces are even. Separate the pieces of fleece. 3. In each corner of the two pieces, measure a 3" x 3" box. Mark the box using chalk or pins. Cut out this box, notching each corner in the same manner on both blankets. Discard the boxes, or save for another project. (optional step) 4. Make a guide out of a notecard that is three or four inches long and one inch wide. (A large popsicle stick is a great guide as well. Use this guide to cut even slits around the entire edge of both pieces of fleece. Cut the slits perpendicular to the edge of the quilt, three inches deep (or four inches for a larger blanket) into the fabric from the edges, and one inch wide apart. 5. Lay the two pieces of fleece on top of each other, right sides out. Take a slit from one piece of fleece and tie it to the slit on the other piece of fleece that's directly beneath it. Double knot it securely, but don't tie too tightly or you may damage the slit. Continue tying slits together all the way around the blanket until both pieces of fleece are joined. Check the web for more instructions if needed. Search no-sew fleece blankets. Be Creative! Please do not add embellishments such as buttons, glitter, beads, or sequence. Iron-on s and embroidery are OK. Tags: Roll up the blanket and attach a tag with a ribbon or other material. Please do not use safety pins to attach the tag. Your tag should have a nice friendly message with your school name and 4-H emblem. Blankets are due to the 4-H office by January 29, * We will also collect the small blankets you can buy for a low cost at most stores. The more blankets we get the more smiles we will see.

5 Page 5 Terrebonne 4-H Livestock Join Us for the Terrebonne Parish 4-H Junior Livestock Show and Rabbit Show Houma Airbase Pavilion Friday, January 22, 2016 Rabbit Show 5:00 pm Saturday, January 23, 2016 Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Pig, and Poultry Show 9:00 a.m. Terrebonne Parish 4-H will hold a Parish Rabbit Show on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Terrebonne Parish Jr. Livestock Show. It will take place at the Air Base Arena Building on the East Side of Houma. 4-H members interested in participating in the Parish Rabbit Show should contact Mr. Reed at the 4-H office ( ) by January 15, 2016 for registration information. 4-H Top Chefs Clover Thanks to Bourg Elementary School for hosting the Beef, Sugar, and Sweet Potato Cookery! Our educational focus this year at our club meetings is Wetlands. One of Louisiana s most valuable and vulnerable resources is our coast. Here are a few interesting facts: The Crisis: LA contains approximately 40% of the nation's wetlands and experiences 90% of the coastal wetland loss in the lower 48 states. 60% of Louisiana s land loss occurs in the Barataria and Terrebonne basins LA is losing 25 to 35 square miles of wetlands per year and the highest rates are occurring in the Barataria and Terrebonne basins at 10 and 11 square miles per year. At current land loss rates, nearly 640,000 more acres, an area nearly the size of Rhode Island, will be under water by What can we do? Become advocates for our coast and for restoration projects Become involved in restoration projects within our community Terrebonne Junior Leaders doing their part to help protect Louisiana s Coast.
