1 Check out our NEW Summer Classes & our exciting Day Camps! May 14th is the 1st Day of Registration! The PURE Star Volume 4, issue 10 may 2012 PURE Academy Office Hours Monday to Friday, 10AM-6PM Saturday, 9AM-2PM Sunday, CLOSED PUREwear Retail Store Hours Monday to Friday, 10AM-6PM Saturday & Sunday, CLOSED SUMMER IS A Comin! May 14th, Registration Begins For some, summer is a time to rest, relax and rejuvenate. But for many of our students, it is a time to dig in deeper to their favorite art forms! This year we are offering NEW programming and repeat programming from past years that has worked very well. We have programming for everybody this summer, from the beginner performer, to the student looking for fun and friendship, to the student looking to greatly increase their skills over the summer with intensive programming and coaching. Summer is a great time for parents to try their child in a performance skill that they have not yet tried to see if they like it, since it is only a 6 or 8 week commitment. The staff for this summer is busy preparing lessons for our best line up of summer programming YET! Welcome Roger Wellington, Holly Holmes, Melissa Colman, Heather Stewart and Stacie Suitor to the summer class roster! Classes are a great value for your dollar! Summer Classes for Early years/mini Students (18 months 5) Raindrops (Parent/tot class) Early Years Dance (Creative Movement) My First Ballet and Tap Combination Class Pre-Competitive Starter Class (Intensive) Mini Summer Dance Party (Jazz/Hip hop) Summer Classes for Junior Students (6 14) Mini Tap and Ballet Combination Break for summer, Breakdance Junior Summer Dance Party (Jazz/Hip hop) Across the Floor Bootcamp (Intensive Class) Stretch and Strengthen Drama Class (6 week program) Summer Classes for Teen Students (10 18yrs) & Adult) Pre-Teen Summer Dance Party (Jazz/Hip hop) Partnering (male/female) (Intensive) Across the Floor Bootcamp (Intensive) Tap Catch up Intensive (As recommended by coaches) Contemporary Dance *NEW* Adult Strut Heels Jazz class Invitation & Next Step Forms Pure teachers are always focused on the individual student. Here is how you, the parents benefit from belonging to a studio who really wants your child to flourish. We are paying attention in the classroom since the first day in September (or second term start) to see who your child really is. What is their style of learning? What is their passion in the arts? Where would they thrive? Are they a natural? Are they especially focused? Inspire talent. Develop abilities. Love the Arts.

2 We pass out 2 different kinds of forms in the weeks leading up to recital. NEXT STEP forms go to everybody. This sheet is important. It is a direct recommendation from your child s caring instructor as to where they should progress to next. Some teachers might even recommend another discipline, but most recommend the next grade level within the current discipline that they are enrolled. Please keep in mind that your child may be asked to repeat a grade. NO CHILD EVER FAILS AT PURE. However, in some classes our grade levels span several years of age (ie 9 11) and they may not yet have mastered all of the skills to move to the next level. Also, in ballet, the ROYAL ACADEMY recommends that students take 2-3 years in one grade before proceeding. This is so that students MASTER current skills before progressing to much harder ones. Dance, drama and music is not about rushing through the grades, it is about getting masterful with each set of skills at each level and being able to apply them to performance or choreography. If your child is asked to repeat a year in the same grade, trust us, we know what we are doing and also trust that they will be pushed harder at that level if it is a repeat year in a grade. When you register for the next year, (which we invite you all to do), you should bring that form. If you lose it, our administrative team can look up your child s recommendation in our records. We hope you like this useful tool parents. We spend a lot of time thinking about the correct next step for each child. INVITATIONS/AUDITIONS Some children may receive invitations to some of our specialty programs. These children have been selected by teachers who have noticed them as being a natural or obvious fit for a certain program. These programs include Ballet Company, Dance PAK, Competitive Dance and its subsequent training programs and Triple Threat. We want you to know as parents if we see an obvious skill set emerging from your child. The good news is, if your child does not receive a specific invitation to a program, they are almost always still eligible to join. Here is a quick break down of how each of our programs entrance policies work. Ballet Company By Invitation. If no invitation was received, an assessment class is required. ~ Petite Elite (4-6 years) Assessment class Tues May 22, 6-7pm ~ Elite Ballet (7 9 years) Assessment class, Tues May 22, 7 8pm ~ Junior Elite (10+ years) Assessment class, Wed May 23, 5 6pm Triple Threat Registration is open to all. Bailey will be offering Gymnastics based ACRO class on Sunday afternoons starting September. 2 classes per month will take place at PURE and 2 classes will take place at Blenheim gymnastics club. At the club the technique and stunt training will take place and at PURE the choreography and dance aspect will be developed. We are very excited to work with Bailey and provide our dancers with another opportunity to grow! Bailey s Biography Bailey started recreational gymnastics with the Blenheim Golden Eagles Gymnastics Club at the age of 4 and within a year was tested to join the interclub elite program. By the age of 9 she had competed in several gymnastics competitions in Ontario and received high honors. Her competitive career ended at the age of 14 but her love for the sport did not stop. She became a part of the Gymnastics Ontario, CIT program, Coach in Training and at the age of 16 started taking the NCCP courses required to become a certified gymnastics coach. As a registered member of Gymnastics Ontario, she is Level 2 certified for both Men s and Women s Artistic Programs, which includes both theory and sports specific courses, Bailey is also certified for Foundations in Trampoline. She has completed NCCP Risk Management and Respect in Sport as well as 2012 CPR First Aid Training. Along with the love of gymnastics Bailey also began dancing at the age of 4 with Debbie McGonigle School of Dance in Blenheim. Excelling in Jazz, Bailey joined the New Sensations Performing Dance Group and continued to dance until she was 18, receiving a scholarship in 2010 from her studio. Bailey has tested and received her Annual Jazz award through the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (B.A.T.D). A current honor student at St. Clair College Bailey is extremely excited to join PURE s family to help develop gymnastics and ACRO based dance skills through proper training and encouragement. 6 DANCE PAK TEAM Dance Dance Canada Results! I would like to congratulate Brit tany Meechem and all of the Pak Dancers and Families on a stun ning day at Dance Canada. Anyone that was at that awards ceremony must of felt the pride and excitement that I felt for these dancers. In particular I noticed the con sistency with all 18 numbers all in fact receiving the High Gold standard. It clearly tells me that all members are working very hard in every class. It also tells me the level of respect our dancers have for each other and the respectful relationships that exist between the Pak coaches, the dancers and the families. I also want to mention that Brittany s passion and dedication to the PAK program is outstanding and her heart encompasses every single dancer on all 4 teams. In particular I must make mention of Brittany s choreography. It would be exceptionally difficult to choreograph 18 numbers but Brittany has tackled this very challenge. I felt that Brittany s choreography was fresh and exciting; full of stories and in the end Brittany won the choreography award for the Pre competitive division on the weekend. It would be remiss of me to not also mention Candice s work on the costumes. It was so clear to me that PURE s costumes were at a standard far superior to the competition on Saturday. The dancers looked wonderful on stage and I think that makes them feel confident as they dance. Awesome work Candice!
