1 WSRC #69 **District Governor Visits September 29** WSRC#69 Chips from the Buzzsaw Our Program: Art Pimentel The West Sacramento Center The West Sacramento Center opened in the fall of 1999 with 3 classrooms and a computer lab in it s original Halyard Drive location. In January, 2010, they moved to their permanent home in the downtown, across from the West Sacramento City Hall. The Center is a 25,000 square foot, 3 story building that includes 12 classrooms and 1 academic computer lab. The campus was designated center status accreditation by the California Community College Board of Governors in As part of the Los Rios Community College District, the West Sacramento Center has expanded services to the local community, giving access to classes and training that benefit more than 2500 currently enrolled students. With a focus on the needs of students who also have full time jobs, the Center is open on Saturdays as of this year s fall semester. The goal of the Center is to provide fully transferable college credits to students so that they may go on to obtain a four-year college degree. Art, who is also a Member, took time out from his own doctoral studies and full-time job to address us. Thanks, Art! The pot will grow once proceeds from purchases exceed $ Used Professional Clothing?...Remember to bring your gently used business attire to the meeting this Friday. Lori Hawkins and Quirina Orozco are collecting shirts, ties, jackets, belts, shoes and other clothing that is suitable for business attire. These will go to disadvantaged young adults as part of a program to give the training, tools and confidence needed to seek a professional career. HURRICANE DISASTER RELIEF Rotary District 5930 is partnered with McAllen North Rotary Fund a 501 (c) 3 to set up an Emergency Relief Fund. Make checks to McAllen North Rotary Fund (Fed tax # ) and mail to Rotary D 5930, McAllen North Rotary Club, 501 W. This is one of their major fund raising efforts, and all the proceeds benefit either their Club or are invested in the needy of our own community. Plan on buying some tickets!!

3 This week we began a weekly football pool, where a $10 buy-in affords you the chance to pick the each week s winners for a prize-pot split with the Club. In our first week, we saw 12 entries, with Tim Carnahan splitting $120 with the Club. Some thoughtful person put 10 pools in the hands of the Club Pheasant management, so chances are the pot will be much bigger this week. Who s in? Hardly ever does the biggest football brain (sorry Tim!) win it, so your chances are good, and the Club s are even better! Gambling must be in the air, as our next Dice Tournament has been scheduled for October 24. Ron Chambers and Wayne Enke will be in charge as usual, which means that we are in for some well-lubricated fun. This tournament is open to friends and family, so bring em! It fills up fast, so plan on snagging a spot as soon as the tickets are available. Don t forget to bring in your gently used professional clothing. We will continue collecting for the next several weeks as we ask Members to comb through their closets in search of shirts, ties, jackets, suits, or just about anything a needy young, upwardly mobile person could use to make a good impression on that first, most important job interview. Quirina Orozco and Lori Hawkins will do the rest. 4 The West Sacramento Rotary Club, along with Rotary International, is working to raise awareness about victims of human trafficking and domestic abuse. The Club is sponsoring Members who participate in the Walk/ Run to benefit My Sister s House. See Quirina Orozco or to be a part of the Rotary Team, or sign up on your own and get 1/2 of your entry fee covered by the Club. Register or donate, here s you chance to make a difference! Hats Off and more to David Kamminga, who gave up his trademark ponytail as part of the St. Baldrick s Event to benefit cancer research. David, along with others, received pledges to do the deed. We ll ask him all about it, and find out if anyone signed his head (for more money!) at Friday s meeting. Good job, David!! S A V E T H E D A T E One of our most popular Rotary activities, the Dice Tournament returns on October 24. Anyone who has enjoyed this event in the past knows that it will fill up quickly! Run by Ron Chambers and Wayne Enke, the Dice Tournament is a fun mixer for the Club, but is open to the public. Bring friends and family for a night of loud, raucous fun. Enjoy heavy appetizers and the loving care and cocktail service of the Club Pheasant staff. The rules? So simple: Just pay your money, roll the dice, eat, drink and have fun!

5 If you miss a meeting, you miss a lot of fun. Just ask Judy Ratley and Jeff Post (above) or Steve Lewis (right).? (far right) Dave Wilson and Dick Uno show how Rotarians enter the room (from the bar!). (bottom right) Heine is in for the Polio Plus raffle AND the football pool!
