1 February is World Understanding Month President Mike Campbell recognized Ed Rounthwaite and Troy Bird for their membership service to the club. Ed enjoys the fellowship of the club and the substantial good deeds Rotary performs. Troy also enjoys the fellowship and the Meals on Wheels activities. These two and their hard work remind Mike of why he is proud to be a member of the Rotary Club of West Sacramento. CELEBRATE ROTARY IS A GIFT Program: Christian Baldini, Camellia Symphony Music Director and Conductor Christian Baldini s career into music stated at an early age in Argentina, even though he did not grow up in a musical family. His father was a surgeon and his mother a nurse. Christian involvement in music started by taking piano lessons from a patient of his father and that started Christian s passion for music. He believes that music is not a luxury music can offer something to everyone and all should have access to it. Christian also enjoys working with young people. Not only is he been the director of the Camellia Symphony since 2012, Christian is also on staff at UC Davis (since 1979) serving as the Music Director of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra. The Camellia Symphony, a volunteer group, performs locally and offers free family concerts. When he works with the youth, Christian will talk about the composer and their music. He will have the symphony play a short passage and he will describe the themes within the music. Christian will also recruit students to try their hand a conducting and the musicians will follow exactly as directed. Students are surprised to find out how much is involved in conducting. The Camellia Symphony performs four time a year and recently one concert was bilingual. Christian believes that there is a need for more support for the arts in the area. His approach is to reach as many people as possible and to teach them to appreciate music more than by just listening to it. 5 CHIPS FROM THE BUZZSAW Volume 65, Issue 25 5 Chunks from the Buzzsaw by Dr. Charyl Silva Ahhh, second semester chaos: Lunch schedules have changed along with meeting locations. Mr. Duff, our teacher advisor, has agreed to support us during first lunch. Ms. Tan has agreed to have our meetings in her classroom for second lunch. Second lunch n u mbers have dr oppe d drastically. We will discuss how we can build up our club. Last year s RYLA recipients spoke about their experiences at camp. They are working on their last fundraiser - Valentine flowers. Please support RCHS Interact by buying flowers. They will be pre-selling the flowers during their lunches. FUTURE ROTARIAN: Kasem Salim Kasem Salim is a Junior at River City High School and is one of the few members who has been in the Interact since their Freshman year. Kasem has been elected to be next year s vice president. This requires him to shadow the current VP the entire year and learn what is involved in doing the position and be successful next year. Kasem chaired an event at Dave's Haunted Corn Maze. The event was a big part to generating funds for the club. Kasem also participates in the Reading Buddies program. Following high school, Kasem wants to pursue a career in bio-medical engineering. He is currently looking into UC Davis and Stanford as potential schools. Kasem feels that his organizational skills and his willingness to cooperate with others makes him a positive influence to the Interact Club. With members working together, the club is an effective group and makes a difference at the school, in the community and internationally. Kasem s cannot choose any one moment in Interact as his favorite. He believes every moment he has had with his fellow members has a special place Rotary International President Ron D.
