1 Chips from the Buzzsaw Weekly Newsletter of the Rotary Club of West Sacramento Volume 70, No 19 December 17, 2018 Don Carrithers Professional Baseball Player Don signed his first professional contract with the Giants at the age of 17. After 2 1/2 years in the minor leagues, Don joined the San Francisco Giants in Philadelphia and started his first game in the old Connie Mack Stadium. When the Giants returned to Candlestick Park, Don s locker was between Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Millie McCovey. At the age of 20 he won his first major league game at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. BIRDISM What, no socks to throw at me? Don got his first major league shutout in 1971 against the Houston Astros. That year the Giants won the Western Division Pennant. The starting rotation was Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Ron Bryant and Don Carrithers. Also that year, Don s High School teammate Jim Barr joined the Giants pitching staff. Don was traded from the Giants to the Montreal Expos in the Spring of He spent 3 seasons with the Expos before being sold to the Minnesota Twins. He got his first major league hit against Hall of Famer Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals. Don was also lucky enough to face :Home Run King Hank Aaron many times. Don gave up runs #633 and #710 to Hammerin Hank. Don is retired and currently lives in Elk Grove, California. YoloCounty Farm Bureau President BILL MERWIN conducted quite a meeting last Saturday. Of obvious historical significance was that fact that the Automatic Sugar Beet Harvester was invented by BABE SLATER and GUS OLSON. The first Automatic Tomato Harvester by the HERINGER Brothers, and the Automatic Milo Harvester was introduced by JIM and BILL FRASER! I think that HOWARD RESMER invented the first Cotton GIN but he was so busy figuring out different ways to drink it, that Eli Whitney got the patent rights! 3. Pitchers: Strong is thy right arm. 4. Catchers: Thou shall not steal. 5. Outfielders: Behold, I will send a swarm a flies upon thee. 6. Ruth went to the well with a pitcher. 7. Eve stole first. 8. Adam stole second.
