1 School Newsletter 6 February 2015 Good morning, what a week! First we had the excitement of the snow, which always throws everyone into panic! The children however loved playing out in it and by 10.30am all staff had made their journeys in from various different places. I know it was really difficult for the 'Guildford bound' staff who took over two hours to do a relatively short journey. On Wednesday a small team of us headed up to the DfE in London to be interviewed about the proposed Newark Primary School. It was an intense experience of 100 minutes of questioning from a panel representing different arms of the DfE. There were no giveaways at the end of the interview and we are told that we should hear news towards the end of March. The DfE have been interviewing different Free School teams between January 10th and February 5th and will look at how many go forward in line with wider educational and government strategy. I will keep you updated as and when we hear any news. This week also sees the deadline for submission of the National Teaching School Application which I have been busy working on, having met with various strategic colleagues in and around Surrey and the home counties. We should hear news about this in late April and again I will keep you posted with any news. Education will no doubt be a prominent topic as we go into the election campaign. A short update regarding the incident which happened after school yesterday - a toddler was injured and an ambulance called following an incident on Coldharbour Road close to the school. I'm pleased to report that the toddler is doing well and is back home bouncing back to his old self. My thanks to the staff and families who assisted with the situation. There was great excitement as Year 1 headed off to Windsor Castle today, so expect some photos and an update next week. 2 ESSA National Primary Team Championships (Surrey Round) For the first time in a number of years, Pyrford took a team of girls and boys along to the Surrey round of the ESSA National Team Championships for Primary Schools, which was held at the Guildford Spectrum on Saturday 31 st January We were able to enter a team separately for both girls and boys, and entered the medley relay and the freestyle relay for each. Whilst the team were excited to just be there, the event was actually the Surrey qualifying round for the South East Region Championships to be held in April, and thereafter the National competition to be held in Sheffield in June. In addition, it was being held under strict ASA guidelines, so any team could be disqualified for faulty takeovers or for non-legal strokes. This was definitely a level of swimming that most of the boys had never experienced before! Our boys team Alex Keane, Isaac Wong, Freddie Plummer, Lorenzo Vanotti and William Cobbett performed brilliantly, and gave their all in each of their races. Most impressively, there were no disqualifications and they swam fast and well. Unfortunately, they did not make the finals, but had a great time and wanted to do it all again! Our girls team Genevieve Moller-Butcher, Izzy Simons, Maddi Livingstone and Gemma Robins realised that they were actually a force to be reckoned with, when they easily coasted to the finals in both races from a field of 16. In the finals, the girls swam strongly and confidently, and managed to hold off some tough opposition to finish 2 nd in both events! Only the top two teams from each county automatically make it through to the Regional Championships, so this great performance secured their place. Well done to all our swimmers and good luck to the girls in April! (And thanks to our fabulous supporters who had a wonderful evening and shouted themselves hoarse!) Yesterday afternoon our Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6 football teams took part in the Bishop David Brown Primary School Football Competition and did very well. Both teams played 4 games with Years 3 & 4 drawing 1 and winning 3 - coming out overall Tournament winners beating Horsell 2-0 in the final! Year 5 & 6 won 3 games and lost 1. Due to an administrative mix-up with the scores they ended up playing for 5th/6th place (instead of playing for 3rd/4th) and won. Well done boys and thank you to Mr Jones for taking them. Last Friday our Year 5 and Year 6 football teams played away to West Byfleet Junior School. Congratulations to both teams. Year 6 won 3-2 and Year 5 won 5-2!

3 World Book Day takes place this year on Thursday 5th March and we would like to do something to mark the day in school. We are going to have a dressing up day, where the children can come in dressed as any book character they like. There will be more information on this nearer the time, but it is good to have plenty of notice for something where a costume is needed! Kingfield Primary School is looking for a Nursery Lunchtime Supervisor to support their young children (aged 3-4) from 11:30am to 1pm - term time only. Larch - Zahra Rasab for an excellent journal entry in the style of a character in Literacy. Birch - Max Daines for fantastic Literacy work about Grandpa Chatterji. Rowan - Luca Pepe for some lovely, thoughtful work in RE. Willow - Abi Lee for a brilliant persuasive poster warning about Aztec crime and punishment. Laurel - Josh Shandley for super effort in Numeracy. Holly - Zach Woodhouse for working hard in Numeracy.

6 We have already started laying the groundwork for this year s Flower Show, which will be held on Saturday 11th July. However, the committee needs new volunteers to join in the planning and running of the show this early on in the game. The show can only survive if more people join the committee - whether it is admin, promotion, proof reading, selling advertising, organising the raffle, planning the procession, sharing the task of showground manager - there are lots of jobs to do and it will make it so much easier to cope on the day with more hands on deck now. I m sure everyone in the parish is proud to have a village show with such a fantastic reputation, so why not be part of it?
