This is the 21st yer for the event, which runs through Sept. 27. He lso decided to leve the group fter the recording of the lbum ws complete. Working with new producer Rich Costey on Kintsugi did crete different dynmic in the studio thn hd existed on other Deth Cb For Cutie lbums, but it ws nother person from outside the bnd who influenced key fcet of the new lbum s well, ccording to Ben Gibbrd, frontmn nd songwriter of the bnd. Deth Cb plys show on Sept. 28 t Grnd Sierr Resort nd Csino. Gibbrd sid longtime friend, singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis, helped him confront personl topics in notbly different wy on Kintsugi. This cme t time when Gibbrd lso ws well known s Zooey Deschnel s husbnd. At the time when I ws living in Los Angeles, I ws living life behind gtes, Gibbrd sid in n erly April phone interview. I men, literlly nd figurtively. Like kind of the outside world ws to be fered nd there were crzy people out there nd they wnted pieces of you. So I feel like looking bck on tht time in writing tht lbum ( Codes nd Keys ), I veiled lot of things in tht lbum. Some of (the lyrics) were not to the liking of long-time fns, becuse tht s not the type of writing I m prticulrly known for. Gibbrd, over the pst five yers or so, hd been through severl lifechnging events. He hd overcome n ddiction to drinking nd drugs. He hd gone through divorce from Deschnel, nd he hd moved from Los Angeles bck to his previous hometown of Settle. Yet, if Gibbrd wnted to open up lyriclly on Kintsugi, he needed push in tht direction. Tht s where Lewis cme in. With this lbum... I found myself struggling with how I ws going to pproch writing bout lot of these things, he sid. And spending time with Jenny Lewis, who is long-time friend of mine, she sid to me, No, you don t chnge how you write. You don t chnge your work becuse you re ferful of somebody mocking it or reding too fr in between the lines. You hve Deth Cb For Cutie WE ARE THE RHOADS to do your work your wy. Tht relly hd huge impct on me. Gibbrd ppers to hve lnded in good plce fter his period of chnge, sying tht he looks bck on his time in Los Angeles s very strnge chpter in my life, but n importnt chpter. I think I needed to leve the Northwest nd hve this series of very unusul kind of experiences to relize how importnt my home nd my true friends in the Northwest were. It s cler, though, prting with Wll ws big del for Gibbrd, s well s for his Deth Cb For Cutie bndmtes, bssist Nick Hrmer nd drummer Json McGerr. An originl bnd member, Wll shred writing credits with Gibbrd on mny Deth Cb For Cutie songs nd becme the bnd s producer on its 1998 debut lbum, Something About Airplnes. Wll went on to produce ll of the bnd s releses before Kintsugi. Wll ctully strted out producing the new lbum s well, but decided erly on in the project to step side nd let the bnd work with n outside producer. On previous lbums, the fct tht Wll would hve to ply the songs live ment tht Gibbrd hd to be sensitive to Wll s opinions of the songs nd vis vers. An outside producer could be honest nd blunt with his opinions, which Gibbrd sid he found helpful. I m not going to sit here nd kind of revise our history nd sy tht we could hve mde better records if Chris hdn t been producing them, Gibbrd sid. I don t think tht t ll. But I do think in working with Rich, I think tht we could hve benefited long the wy by hving somebody else in the studio with us tht hd different perspective, for the betterment of everybody, for the betterment of the lbum nd the songwriting. I think Rich Costey ws ble to tell me some things bout the songs tht Chris wouldn t hve been ble to tell me bout them. I think his bility to kind of be relly stright-forwrd nd corse t times is not possible coming from Chris, given our reltionship, he sid. Even with Costey s input, Kintsugi IF YOU GO Who: Deth Cb for Cutie When: 7 Sept. 28 Where: Grnd Thetre, Grnd Sierr Resort nd Csino Cost: $45.50 Detils: sounds very much like Deth Cb For Cutie lbum. In fct, it s gining erly comprisons to pir of lbums 2003 s Trnstlnticism nd 2005 s Plns tht re considered definitive lbums by the group. Like those lbums, Kintsugi is spre in its sound, s Cotsey leves spce for ech instrument to occupy its own plce in the mix. The lbum lens decidedly towrd mid-tempo mteril setting tht hs long been strength of Deth Cb For Cutie. Songs like Blck Sun, You Hve Hunted Me All My Life nd No Room In Frme re good exmples, with their deliberte bets nd strk led guitr lines giving Gibbrd plenty of room to unfurl his vocl melodies. Although Deth Cb For Cutie is officilly trio, two dditionl musicins re in the fold for touring, guitrist/keybordist Dve Depper nd keybordist/guitrist Zc Re. While prising Wll s skills s guitrist, Gibbrd sid he likes how the new Deth Cb sounds live. I feel like Dve is doing wonderful job of plying Chris prt, down to like the tones he s choosing. I lso feel like he s bringing his own flir to it s well, Gibbrd sid. And hving Zc s bckup guitr plyer nd lso keybordist, I relly feel tht this version of the live bnd is the best we ve ever sounded. Gibbrd dded tht fifth person lso picking up missing elements from the lbum versions hs been helpful, s well s hving some new perspective on their longtime fvorites. I think tht plying the sme music with the sme people for so long, you tke some of it for grnted bit nd lose little bit of focus nd you don t listen s much s you should be listening, Gibbrd sid. Re-lerning ll of these songs with new people, you re kind of forced to py little more ttention, which I think is good for ll of us.

And it mkes good point: While the British pop-rock bnd s 1980s hits re nostlgic for both the bnd nd its fns, it would be inccurte to describe Durn Durn s nostlgi bnd, hving just relesed its 14th lbum. Updted sound While Pper Gods hs some touches of clssic Durn Durn to it, its updted sounds fit in with tody s musicl lndscpe. Singer Simon LeBon sounds s vibrnt s ever in his delivery, nd guest rtists who cme nd went during the recording process lent the bnd some fresh perspective. Guests include Nile Rodgers, guitrist John Fruscinte, Jnelle Mone nd producers Mr Hudson nd Mrk Ronson (who lso produced the bnd s previous lbum). When you ve been going for six months every dy nd somebody like Mr Hudson shows up, it ws fresh energy nd fresh ers, Tylor sid. And when Nile cme in, it ws nother burst of fresh energy. It kept refreshing the project. The first guy to come into the lbum from the outside ws (Red Hot Chili Peppers guitrist) John Fruscinte. He sid I m big fn of you guys, I know you re mking record, cn I ply on it? Yes, bsolutely! So tht relly opened the doors to the collbortion. It ws orgnic the wy it hppened. With the new lbum on the street, it gives the bnd even more mteril with which to ssemble its set lists. But, Tylor sid, they ll still pull out the nostlgic bits, of course, s the 1980s were very kind to the bnd, with more thn dozen Billbord Top 40 singles, including Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, The Reflex nd View to Kill. Tylor sid tht he s observed tht fns wnt to her the new music t concerts, too. We pick the relly gret stuff from the ctlog nd we ll do the new ones s well, he sid. We don t relly hve to ply fillers. We ve even hd complints tht there were too mny hits; tht every song ws single. But wht gret position to be in where we cn do tht. There re rtists who hve one or two records nd they survive on one or two records. Bnd chnges, reunites Durn Durn hd lredy relesed four lbums when Roger nd guitrist Andy Tylor left the bnd in The Durn Durn plys the GSR's Grnd Thetre on Sept. 25. It ws n intense few yers tht we went through." ROGER TAYLOR Durn Durn drummer, tlking bout the bnd s run from 1981 to 1985 remining three LeBon, Nick Rhodes nd John Tylor continued on nd mnged to squeeze out nother hit single without them in 1993 with Ordinry World. The bnd lrgely fell off the rdr fter tht until the five reunited in 2001 nd relesed new lbum, Astronut, in Tylor sid he s much more fit for the position now thn he ws in the 1980s, nd hs been in the bnd in its second go-round more thn twice s long s the originl run. It ws n intense few yers tht we went through, he sid of the bnd s run. I think I ws totlly unprepred for wht cme bout, nd I never thought it ws going to hve the intensity tht it did hve. In some wys, I often think tht mybe if it would hve hppened slower it would hve been n esier ride. Look t bnds like U2. They ve ll stuck together, which I think is gret, nd it s probbly becuse it ws slower trnsition. A few yers into the reunion, Andy Tylor left the bnd gin, nd the group filled in with guest guitrists nd studio musicins. Fruscinte s presence on few of the new songs lend sound reminiscent of Tylor s guitr style. The four remining originl members were determined to continue without Andy. If it did men the shows weren t going to be quite s big or whtever, we still wnted to continue becuse we were still enjoying it, Tylor sid. It ws very pprent tht Andy wsn t enjoying it, nd tht s fir enough. It ws time for him to step off. I ve been in tht position myself.... It wsn t relly working for me t tht prticulr time, so I fully understood when Andy stepped off. While the bnd hs been fortunte PUBLICITY PHOTO enough to hve the bcking of mjor lbels (Cpitol in the 80s, Epic in the 2000s nd currently Wrner Bros.), chrt success isn t the priority it once ws. Our whole self-esteem used to be pinned on chrt positions bck in the 80s, Tylor sid. It ws like, if we didn t go stright to No. 1 in the U.K., it ws disster. (Now), I think s long s the lbum is well received criticlly nd by our udience, I think tht s job done, relly. I think the first thing is you plese yourself. But then you wnt to plese your udience. Durn Durn s upcoming Grnd Sierr show is only its second Reno ppernce; the first being in 1984 t Lwlor Events Center. With Tylor s outlook on the future of the bnd, it s conceivble this show won t be its lst for Reno. Nothing s permnent, is it? Tylor sid. But we hve very stedy ship with this lineup. We re getting on relly well, we re still creting wht we think is gret music nd the live shows still seem to be pushing ll the right buttons. Who knows wht s going to be hppening in five yers, 10 yers? Wht we do know is tht the lineup is something tht s still bering fruit. It ctully ws recorded in nd out of studio settings s the bnd toured mphitheters cross the United Sttes. But the lbum title is fitting becuse the group drew inspirtion for the project by returning to Rockville nd revisiting the community tht still feels like home nerly two decdes fter the group begn its journey together s O.A.R. The bnd plys Sept. 25 t Silver Legcy Resort Csino. The bnd ws looking for concept for the record, looking for something to relly cretively sink our teeth into, sid sx plyer Jerry DePizzo during recent phone interview. So we figured, let s go bck to the Rockville re. We went down the sme rods, went to (drummer) Chris (Culos ) bsement nd kind of rechrged nd reconnected with tht energy nd tht spirit tht first got everybody together plying gigs nd things. Tht ws enough to rechrge the cretive btteries nd go out nd finish the record. This rechrge for O.A.R. begin with songwriter/producer Nthn Chpmn in Nshville in After tht erly session, other prts for the lbum were recorded outside of the recording studio environment. We brought recording rig out, nd we utilized every venue tht we were t, sid DePizzo. We would record guitrs outside in Virgini t show nd we would hve soundstge in Connecticut nd we would be doing hndclps t the end of (the song) I Will Find You. And pino we would do t Srtog Springs becuse they hve bunch of Steinwys just sitting there. So we brought in pino tuner nd hd t it. We utilized every nd ll spce to mke this record. Still, DePizzo credits Chpmn (best known for his work with Tylor Swift) for helping to get the project off to strong strt. Chpmn nd O.A.R. singer Mrc Roberge hd met during n event in Los Angeles nd decided to try writing together. Those Nshville sessions produced the lbum s most concise nd poppy songs, such s Pece O.A.R. nd Two Hnds Up. This met one key gol for the lbum to hve songs tht could be sent to rdio.
