July 6-13, 2013 (Likely Date) - ADGA National Show -Mower County Fairgrounds, Austin, MN CAE Prevention Recommendations Remove kids from dams immediately after birth. Do not allow the dam to clean the kid, or the kid to nurse the dam. Dip navels in iodine and feed kids heat-treated colostrum within half an hour of birth. Colostrum should be heat-treated in a double boiler since it scorches easily. An alternate method is to heat treat colostrum to the desired temperature and put it in a pre-heated thermos for the required time. Be sure the thermos jug will hold the correct temperature for one hour. After feeding heat-treated colostrum, kids should be raised on pasteurized goat milk, cow milk or a good milk replacer (or any combination of the three). The required treatment temperatures for goat milk are as follows: COLOSTRUM: heat to 135 degrees F and hold at that temperature for one hour. Do not overheat or the colostrum will turn into a thick pudding. Stir constantly over a double boiler or put it in a pre-heated thermos jug. GOAT MILK: pasteurize by heating to 165 degrees F for 15 seconds. A home sized pasteurizer can be used for this purpose or the milk can be heated in a double boiler. 3
4 Dear MDGA Members, Spring seems to be coming early this year. This is an exciting time of year new arrivals on the farm and all the chaos of getting back into a routine of milking, caring for babies, getting a few minutes of sleep and still doing the other 101 things we each do every day. All the best as you try to get everything done! I m going to keep this month s letter brief we all have lots of tasks to accomplish at this time of year. Please see the announcement for a logo design contest in this newsletter. MDGA needs it s artistic and graphic design gifted members to submit potential designs for a logo for the 2013 National Show - Let your talents be known! SAVE THE DATE we will have our spring general membership meeting on Saturday, May 5, 2012 on the St. Paul Campus of the U of MN. We will have our traditional general membership meeting and potluck as well as a hands-on udder dissection clinic using goat udder specimens. This will be a very unique opportunity to learn about the anatomy of the udder and what we can do as farmers to ensure high quality milk. Our local National Show committee had its first meeting and is welcoming anyone who wants to help or be involved. We can use all kinds of volunteers, so don t be shy. 6 How a young kid s stomach changes GGG March 2012 Kid health and growth depend heavily on how kids are fed and cared for. Every kid born represents an opportunity to improve your herd genetically, or expand herd size, or both. Your objectives of raising the newborn to weaning age are optimizing growth and minimizing health problems. To accomplish these goals, you need to understand the kid s digestive system. Only abomasum functions At birth, the kid s digestive system is underdeveloped. From birth to about two weeks, the kid is a monogastric, or simple-stomached, animal. The abomasum is the only stomach compartment actively involved in digestion, and only milk or milk replacer provides nutrients. As the kid begins to eat dry feeds, especially grains containing readily fermentable carbohydrates, the rumen takes on a more important role. The stomach compartments grow and change as the kid develops into a ruminant. The fascinating differences between kids and mature ruminants create unique and nutritional needs for pre-weaned kids. At birth, the newborn s functional stomach, the abomasum, is similar to a human s stomach. As the kid grows and begins to consume a variety of feeds, its stomach compartments grow and change accordingly. The abomasum constitutes 60 percent of the young kid s stomach capacity. In contrast, it makes up only eight percent of the stomach capacity in a mature animal. At birth the reticulum and rumen make up thirty percent of the stomach capacity, and the omasum makes up about ten percent. By four weeks, the reticulum and rumen comprise roughly 58 percent of the stomach, the omasum remains the same at twelve percent, and the abomasum falls to about thirty percent. The stomach compartments grow in proportion to the kid s body size. By twelve weeks, the reticulum and rumen will make up more than two-thirds of the total stomach capacity. The omasum still makes up about the same proportion at ten percent. In contrast, the abomasum comprises only twenty percent. The abomasum continues to function as it did at birth, and it has actually grown in size. However, the reticulum and rumen have grown in size and function. They become the most important parts of the stomach system. As the stomach develops more fully, the kid begins functioning as a mature ruminant. Your goal is to promote rumen development early in life. At birth, the rumen is nonfunctional. It has little tissue development and lacks a population of microorganisms. In the absence of a functional reticulum, the kid depends on its digestive enzymes. These are released from the abomasum and small intestine primarily and break down fats, carbohydrates and protein. In the young kid, some liquids can by-pass the rumen and flow directly to the abomasum through the esophageal groove. The esophageal groove is formed when muscular folds from the reticulum come together. This is stimulated by suckling and milk proteins. Therefore, milk, colostrum and replacers bypass the rumen and enter the abomasum. On the other hand, water enters the rumen instead of the abomasum (unless consumed immediately after milk). The esophageal groove forms whether kids are fed from a nipple bottle or from an open ail. Milk forms a clot Within ten minutes after milk or colostrum feeding, the liquid forms a clot in the abomasum due to enzymes (chymosin and pepsin) and hydrochloric acid acting on casein (milk protein) and fat in the milk. Chymosin, also known as rennin, specifically binds with casein. Clotting binds much of the casein and fat into a clump, or curd, to be digested slowly by stomach enzymes over a period of 12 to 18 hours. Many of the enzymes required for normal, rapid digestion of feeds are produced in limited amounts during the first 48 hours of life. Low enzyme activity and curd formation following first colostrum feeding enable the kid to digest and absorb nutrients slowly and efficiently. This helps prevent scours caused by undigested nutrients reaching the large intestine. When a second feeding of colostrum or transition milk occurs, it simply adds to the already-formed curd in the kids s stomach. This system enables the kid s stomach. This system enables the kid to receive a steady supply of nutrients over the first 24 to 48 hours, as long as it is fed casein-containing liquids. The fraction of milk that escapes curd formation is called whey. Whey is composed of water, minerals, lactose and other proteins (including immunoglobulins or antibodies). Whey passes directly into the small intestine for absorption or digestion or both within ten minutes after feeding. From the small intestine, immunoglobulins can be absorbed into the kid s blood stream. Again, the newborn s limited digestive capacity helps the kid by enabling rapid absorption of antibodies that it needs. Digestion of carbohydrates by the newborn is relatively poor. The exception is lactose or milk sugar. Digestion of starch varies according to its origin and processing methods. By three weeks of age, there is a marked improvement in the kid s ability to digest starches. After this period, there also is greater ability to digest vegetable proteins in feeds as enzymes become more active. With this basic understanding of how kid s digest feeds, we can choose appropriate feeds that can be used easily by kids to maintain their health and growth. 6
7 Reasons for having good photos of your goats -Marketing / sales -Breeding /traits reference Goat Photography Quick Camera Basics -Portrait mode if your camera supports scenes/modes -Shutter speed impacts chance of motion blur, try to keep above 1/60 th of a second -Aperture impacts depth of field, try to keep aperture between f5.6 and f11 -Focal Length impacts the field of view, try to keep between 80mm and 300mm, or towards the long side of most zoom lenses -ISO impacts the grain or noise of the photo, always keep this at the smallest number (64, 80, 100, 200 are common smallest numbers) Goat Preparation -Treat the photos as if it was a show -Time the milking for best udder appearance at time of the photos -Trim the goats coat -Fly spray the goat if needed -Check for burrs, dirt, manure, etc Photo Area -Plenty of area to pose goat -Lots of depth to the photo area (long distance behind goat) -Avoid distracting backgrounds (trees, fence posts, cars, houses, etc) -Short grass or road (gravel or tar) to stand the goat on -Have the holding area for the other goats situated so the goat you are photographing will face those goats -If possible shoot on an overcast day or so the goat is in shade During Shoot Considerations Photographer -Using a tripod -Watch for distractions (cars driving in background) -Mark locations for the goat and for the camera using rocks or golf markers -Get down to the goats level -Work with your handler to get the goat set up properly -Have patience with both the goat and handler Handler -Wear an outfit similar to a show outfit or something that is plain -Stand back away from the goat for the photo -Be prepared for the photographer to take several photos -After a shot consider walking the goat for a few steps and the bringing to goat back and reposing -Have patience with both the goat and the photographer Common problems and how to fix them -Grainy photos -Uncooperative goat -Missed focus -Distorted goat -Software 7
