3 Dear MDGA Members: As May approaches, there seems to finally be signs of spring. What a welcome sight! At our farm we have been enjoying the excitement of new kids. They are so playful and carefree, just waiting for us to arrive at the barn and greeting us with joy. (At least that s what I like to tell myself.) I m sure most of you are doing the very same thing. But, I have noticed one group of animals on our farm that has very bad behavior our dry yearlings! Somehow they went from these very same cute, playful, joyful kids in 2010 to a group of hoodlums with absolutely no manners just one year later! Oh my goodness I can hardly get grain/hay in their feeder without being knocked over. If they were actual children we would be embarrassed at their behavior! I suppose this is an excellent example that we sometimes let our animals get away with things that we would not accept from other people! General Membership Meeting Our MDGA spring general membership meeting is coming up on May 14, 2011 at the home of Keith & Morgan Allen (Haycreek Farm) in Kenyon, MN. I sure hope to see lots of members there for the business meeting, tour and potluck lunch. We will be discussing the possibility of a National Show in MN in 2013 as well as other business. Show Announcements The first show announcements of the season are coming out. Be sure to check the calendar of events in the GGG as well as the MDGA website ( for the latest updates. Try to support these shows if you can. Individuals put in a lot of volunteer time and dedication to make these events possible for the rest of us. In addition, if you would like to get an event posted in either location be sure to send information to our newsletter editor, Anna Severson, and our web master, Doug Thompson. Gopher Goat Gossip Goes Online! We have created a place on our website that is a members only page. This is a password protected page. To get the password, please contact our webmaster, Doug Thompson. We will post PDF files of past and current newsletters there as well as other pertinent information as it becomes available. This page is meant to be an alternative to ing the GGG to those who prefer to receive electronic files. The GGG will continue to be printed for those who prefer that option. I m sure you are all super busy this month so I will cut this letter short this month and get back out to the barn. I still have those unruly dry yearlings to train! Please contact me or any other board member with any questions about upcoming meetings, to volunteer for a committee or if you are interested in helping with a possible National Show. Laura Kieser, President, MDGA 3

16 My First Experience Showing Goats Hi, my name is Haleigh Peterson and I m 12 years old. I live in Wrenshall, Minnesota. Last summer I showed my goats for the first time. The show was at the Carlton County Fair in Barnum. I was nervous, but the other exhibitors helped me. I had a lot of fun! My doe won grand champion in the LaMancha class and my Mom s doe won reserve champion. We told a lot of people about the La- Mancha breed. I love my LaMancha goats, and I can t wait to show again! 16
