Chapter Director s Message Hi All, Hope everyone is having a SAFE and FUN summer with many riding opportunities we have had. Speaking of opportunities, recently CA-C had their Rally in Sacramento. As Sal mentioned in his after ride journal we had the largest chapter turn out. We traveled on 7 bikes with 10 CA-2S participants! When we arrived we had to grab two tables so that we could sit comfortably, ten at one table wouldn t work! The rally this year was in a different location, but just as nice as last years. They had several games that you would get points for when you scored. At the end of the games they tallied up the points and gave you raffle tickets that you put towards prizes. I won a nice self-contained oil drain pan. Speaking of winners, Roger came away with one of the money prizes of around two hundred bucks, ice cream for everyone! Speaking of which, we stopped for it on the way home with the chapter picking up the tab. CA-C had a good turnout of folks, ? Lunch was served at 11:45 with hamburgers, beans, soda etc All the chapters got their pictures taken with their bear mascot. Their mascot stands about 5 tall. The ride to and from was excellent as led by Roger, and then Danny and Sandy. The scenery was fantastic traveling both to and from the event along the back roads! July 26 Chapter Meeting. Sal saying something important and waving his papers around. Chapter Eating I would suggest to all CA-2S participants that if you have not gone for a ride with us, take that opportunity next time it is available. It could be a ride after a chapter meeting, a R.T.E., (ride to eat), or a nice long or overnight trip. Speaking of trips the District Rally is fast approaching. The Chapter is offering great incentives to come along and join us for a FUN time. We are giving half off registration and paid in full educational classes! This year it is held in Agoura Hills. The area is said to be beautiful with lots of riding opportunities! Please join us as we come together with other chapters in the California area! Rick giving a ride report Rocky giving his Safety Talk Upcoming events for riding and FUN: Hot August nights, Chapter Business Meeting, Blue Butt, and Chapter Meeting. In the meantime Sal will have his weekly RTE. So keep riding, stay SAFE and have FUN. Roger, Danita, & Ron CA2S Shark Bytes 2

ACD s Message Wingin it to Wing Ding 36 Well, we did not Gold Wing it, we airplane winged it to WI to enjoy our second Wing Ding event. Our trip started out on a negative note with our early morning flight being cancelled due to mega storms in Chicago. Our new flight had us landing in Chicago about 9 PM looking forward to a two and a half hour drive to Madison, Wisconsin. After traffic delays and construction we finally got to bed at 1:30 in the morning. One thing to think about if you are going to an event, book your room early. Otherwise, the choice of comfortable rooms in the area deteriorates rapidly. Our first two nights were in a flop house well, almost. Our second hotel was much more accommodating. They even provided a stack of towels for folks to wipe off their bikes how cool is that!! Most folks were 10 to 12 miles from the convention center. By the way, check other hotels in the area. You may find a better deal than those listed. On Wednesday, we were up at 5:30 AM and at the Alliant Energy convention center for registration by 7 a.m. It was great to see so many old friends and meet so many good people. Opening ceremony started promptly at 8 a.m. It was a kick to see the leadership all wearing cheese heads. Our own region F gained several accolades including the International Couple of the Year honors for Barb and John Pons that was a HUGE and a well deserved honor to two great folks. There were some other announcements made at the opening ceremonies. Remember all the Chapter banter last month about the Wing World magazine cover showing a picture of Reno coming west, etc. For those of you who thought Wing Ding was coming west next year, it is not - however National is planning an event out west. It is not Wing Ding but instead the Reno Rendezvous. Wing Ding 37 will be in Huntsville, AL over Labor Day weekend Yep, this will conflict with our District Rally next year bummer. The rest of our first day was filled with some classes and, of course, the vendor exhibits, oy the vendor exhibits. There is just sooooo much stuff aisles and aisles of stuff. The deals are not so great because they have a captive audience, but there all kinds of interesting things to choose from. A couple of the items I got were a grill protector, and a fire hose style nozzle for my garden hose go figure. There were also loads of artists doing pin striping and murals on motorcycles. Most items for sale were motorcycle related. The self discipline was killing me. Patti attended a great class on GWRRA and the IRS. It was basically about filling out GWRRA forms and tax accounting, but she was able to get some clarification and asked questions on chapter funds. She was able to dispel some of the myths that exist as far as carry over funding. There was quite a bit of rain and not much riding time available on Wednesday and Thursday so the place was packed. We spent a lot of time shopping and looking in on some classes. Madison is a great college town and well laid out. However, summer in the mid west is road repair season due to snow damage and it is hard to get anywhere in or out of town without delays. That said, motorcycles Gold Wing motorcycles filled the road ways. Typically we cannot help but notice them when we see them on the road, but gosh Gold Wings were everywhere. It was really cool to see them all, and they made the local news a couple of nights. Did I say family? We got to see our Alabama Chapter M family, most of which did a long multistate ride to enjoy Wing Ding. We also ran into our friends from Chapter G we visited in Gurnee IL. My gosh, you d think we were members of their chapter for years. What a family!! One highlight for Thursday was a evening visit to my daughter and her family near Milwaukee. It is about a 100 mile drive. It was well worth the trip through the beautiful WI countryside (happy cows?). We spent the evening on their boat on the Milwaukee River enjoying the fireworks show over the city and Lake Michigan. The late night drive back to Madison seemed so much longer yes, traffic delays. The weather on Thursday evening and the rest of the weekend cleared up nicely. The convention area and the vendors area was less crowded with many out enjoying their bikes. On Friday, Fourth of July, we were assigned a work detail. You ve probably noticed the hierarchy of event work details. At a district convention, the Chapters pick up a lot of the chores. At a Region convention, the District officers pick up the duties. At Wing Ding the jobs fall to the Region officers. Patti and I were assigned door monitor duties at the Vendor Expo checking for wristbands. People could not get in without the proper wristband. Trust me, a lot of locals tried, but they had to buy a day pass to get in. The vendor program is a huge draw for motorcycle enthusiasts. We were with a group of about 6 at the door. We all decided to make it fun. We told first timers they had to answer questions, shine shoes, etc. We told folks of huge outlandish discounts 75% off all chrome say Sal sent you., Free trike kits authorized by Patti. Anyone bringing food, especially ice cream, had to leave it with us (to eat). No takers on that one. Because it was the actual 4 th of July folks showed up in some incredible outfits to show pride on our flag and country. Being on gate duty was a lot of work, but with the right attitude it we made it a lot of fun. continued on next page.. CA2S Shark Bytes 4

ACD report, continued: As Saturday rolled in you could see a change. This is the last day and crowds are diminishing. Things are moving at a much slower place and folks are starting to pack up. Now we are starting to see some sales. Even Wing Ding 36 shirts were on sale for $5. Folks were tired and in great spirits. Everyone seemed to get exactly what they came for and that was a great time. We have become good friends with some of the Sky Med folks getting to know them last year when we bought in, and then working with them in Roger s incident. Rog is quite the Sky Med celebrity and his story lives on documented by Sky Med. Sadly, they told us of another incident that had just happened. A participant was talking with them about coverage and elected to hold off on the purchase. Yep, you guessed it, the very next day he was sitting at a stop light on his trike and was rear ended. He wound up hospitalized totaled the motorcycle. It is indeed the kind of insurance you never hope to use, but thank the stars if you do need it. And yes, to this day I keep deer whistles on my bikes. All and all our 2nd Wing Ding was another great experience. Next year may be a bit of a challenge because of our District Convention being at the same time. We may split with one going to Wing Ding and the other to District. Yep, Wing Ding is that much fun. Although we did not get the chance to take the bike, we still had a great time this year, and we stayed a lot more dry. If you never have gone to Wing Ding, don t let the east coast/midwest thing stop you. You owe to yourself to get on a plane (or motorcycle) and experience a good time with some really great folks. Think about Wind Ding in the future you will not be disappointed. 6 Patti s Corner Hi Everyone, The California District convention is just around the corner. If you haven t already signed up, go to the district webpage, print out the registration form and mail it in with a check. It will be lots and lots of fun, I promise you. And, Charlie is offering you a deal to go the chapter will contribute towards your cost of registration.what are you waiting for??? Pre-registrations must be received by August 11 which means; it will cost you more to register onsite. As we have said before, the theme this year is Celebrating California s Magical Hat Trick. As a chapter, we want to do Disney wouldn t it be great if we all showed up wearing different Disney hats. I have already claimed Winnie the Pooh and Sal will be Tigger. If you need help picking a character, Deb and I can help you.and, I figured out a really cool way to make a hat in whatever character you want. Just ask I did mine for almost nothing. So, what is your favorite Disney character?? Let s all go to Agoura Hills and have some fun. Vince and Pam always do their best to be sure that the members have fun. The amount of fun is only limited by you. Get going register, clean up the bike, pack your stuff, bring your Disney hat and let s go. Some of us are planning to leave Thursday morning. There is already members ready to go don t be left behind. Patti. 10 Safety Corner, by Rocky Fagundes Do You Ride with the Right Attitude? Here are some important thoughts from Former MI Asst. District Rider Educators Bruce & Melissa Thayer that I would like to share with the members of CA-2S. When you decide to take your motorcycle out for a ride, what are you thinking about? Where is your attention? Are you thinking about the things you will be doing when you get to work? Is your mind playing with the words you could have said, or should have said, in the debate with your boss or your spouse earlier in the day? In short, where is your head at when you saddle up? Each and every time you throw a leg over your motorcycle it matters what you are thinking about. Whether you are simply commuting to work on your motorcycle to reduce fuel costs, or you are heading out on a week-long vacation on two-wheels, your mental attitude plays a big role in how safe you will be on the road, and how much you will enjoy the ride. Riding a motorcycle is an activity that is 80% to 90% mental while the rest is physical. When you are thinking about the job on your way to work, or going over the list of errands you need to complete, or just letting your mind drift as you idle down to the end of your driveway, your level of safety is reduced. You need to shift your attitude and focus only on the ride to insure an incident free trip. So how do you make the shift from thinking about daily issues to the ride at hand? Establish a routine that you will go through before every ride. Start by evaluating the condition of your motorcycle as you walk up to it. Do a mental T-CLOCS. Look at the tires as you approach (inflated, tread, visible damage). Are there any oily or wet spots on the ground under your bike (where did it come from, is it safe to ride)? And try to be conservative when you answer these questions to yourself. Keep your eyes open for anything amiss. Then, if everything looks okay, gear up. (Of course, you should do a physical T-CLOCS regularly, too, especially before starting a long ride!) Next step, finish donning your protective outer layer. Most of us put on our gear in the same sequence every time. Long pants and boots are usually put on in the house. Out at the bike, your jacket, helmet, eye protection, and gloves complete the process. Consider the weather and make sure you have packed any other gear you may need before the ride is over. Put the key in the ignition and start the bike. While the engine warms, check the fuel level. Determine how far you will be able to go before you need to stop for a fill-up. Do you know the route you plan to take? Do you have all the necessary information with you to get you where you want to go? Good. With those aspects considered, you are ready to focus on the journey. Now, when you shift your bike into gear, shift your brain into active rider mode because nothing else matters now except your safety. All your thoughts should be about the ride you are beginning. Your eyes should be active and scanning your surroundings aggressively! Look for potential hazards that might cause you to change your speed (by braking or accelerating), to change direction (by swerving or turning), or to communicate to other road users. A wave of the hand, a flash of your high beams, or a toot of your horn tells others that you are there. Make sure they are aware of you. All the while your mind should be translating the inputs from your eyes and ears into pictures of things that might happen next. Evaluate in your mind what your response would be to each of the possibilities. When a hazard comes up, keep your options open until you have to choose one the best one the one that lets you avoid the hazard safely and without any drama. This is riding with the right attitude the attitude that your job is to ride safely until you park your bike and remove the key from the ignition. Develop a routine like this for yourself and every ride you take will be a safer and more pleasing ride. CA2S Shark Bytes 10

District Director s Message District Convention Wing Ding in Wisconsin is over and, all in all, was a resounding success. Almost 9,000 members converged on Madison for what was in essence a family reunion. Home office may complain that they don t get as many attendees from the western states as they do from the east, but Region F let their presence be known! First, there was the announcement of the International Chapter of the Year, Colorado s Chapter L from Lakewood, and then came the announcement that Colorado s District Directors, John and Barb Pons, were selected as this year s International Couple of the Year bringing a whole new meaning to the term Rocky Mountain High in Colorado. At closing ceremonies, Princess won part of the 50/25/15/10 drawing which paid for most of our expenses so how could we label the event anything but a resounding success? Now that we have been home for a week, the laundry is done and life is almost back to normal, we are 100% focused on the upcoming District Convention in Agoura Hills. This Labor Day will mark the second time we have been to this hotel, but the first time since it has been remodeled as The Sheraton. The Sheraton s room rates for Labor Day Weekend normally start at $159 per night, but they have graciously lowered their rates for us to $89! Please use the booking link on the District s website to ensure you receive the discounted rate as the hotel reservation department has told members that the hotel is entirely booked if you call them directly. Mike Burke, along with Pat Singer have done an excellent job in lining up educational classes with a full slate of courses as well as ample opportunities to become certified as a Seminar Presenter in Rider Ed or Leadership Training, or just renew the discipline you are not certified in. Jerry Cowen, along with our Region Director of Rider Education, Dave Gormley, will be putting on the Advanced Rider Course for up to 12 bikes. John Boman and Shirley Machado will be administering the Trike Rider Course, but due to the restricted size of the range, will only be able to take the first six registrants. The riding should be phenomenal! Right outside the hotel is some of the best canyon riding that California has to offer and if it becomes a little too warm on our side of the foothills, the Malibu canyons are just on the other side. If history is your thing, the Ronald Reagan Library is only 25 minutes away, but you may need to go on-line to purchase your tickets in advance if you are planning on taking your whole group. Be sure to read last month s newsletter that hi-lighted many of the local attractions. Closing ceremonies should be exceptionally entertaining this year. Like last year, those people that have purchased the dinner tickets will be enjoying the professional hypnotist we have hired. We have hired Marc Bachrach who, unlike other hypnotists, bills himself as the kinder, gentler hypnotist that will have everyone laughing, but no one embarrassed. This will be an incredibly fun-filled weekend and we look forward to seeing each of you there. Oh and speaking of fun, don t forget those crazy, silly hats. Bring two, bring three, or just bring that one special hat you ve been dying to wear. Be a part of the fun, you ll be glad you did. Until next time, ride well and ride often and we will see you in Agora Hills. -Vincent and Princess Puterbaugh CA2S Shark Bytes 11

2014 Couple of the Year Last month I hit a little bit on involvement with your chapter, and on having FUN. Hey, there s that word again, FUN! Well, this article is kind of a continuation. Last month I also mentioned a couple of CA2S events that are coming up this year in the very near future. No details, just mentioned. Well, I m going into a little more detail on these events because they are quickly approaching and one faster than the other, if that s even possible. The first one is our annual CA2S Progressive Dinner, which will be held later this month (August) on a Saturday. We re expecting a good turnout and some hungry people. Last year s dinner was a rip-roaring success, and FUN, and certainly tasty. We had a great group because the people that went had first decided to get involved and then they expected to have FUN, and they did. And of course who wants to pass up free food? The second event is our annual CA2S Halloween Party in October. You might ask yourself, isn t it a little too early to mention this in August? Well, the answer is NOOOOOoooooOOOOOOooooOOOOO! (Just use your imagination on how this might sound) There are lots of things to do, things to organize, things to prepare. Last years party was a hoot. We had a Skeleton and Zombies and a Grim Reaper. "Robyn" Hood and Pirates and Hippies and Clowns. Lots of clowns. Heck, how could you possibly not have FUN with Clowns? We also had some normal looking people. (disclaimer alert: the word normal is not used here to condone acceptance of one s appearance based on anything relevant or irrelevant). Whew, dodged a (nerf) bullet on that one. As a bonus, there is also great food and fantastic goodies. What s Halloween without goodies? To answer that, it s not Halloween!? So, these events are coming up and if you haven t already decided to go, I strongly encourage you to get involved. Whether it is helping out or just going for the festivities. Have some FUN. We don't bite. Okay, maybe a little. Happy Riding, and Be Safe! Gary & Lori Mouldenhauer Article Disclaimer: Any grammar errors spotted in this article were put there because I could. you might actually have some FUN. Happy Riding, and Be Safe!
