Scoring for a Cure How it all started: Tulpehocken Area School District started Scoring for a Cure (SFAC) in August of 2009 after one of their Boys Soccer players, Andrew Frantz, was diagnosed with T Cell ALL Leukemia in December of The Tulpehocken community rallied together around SFAC during that 2009 soccer season. T Shirts were sold and fans had the chance to donate to the cause after each Tulpehocken goal scored Boys Soccer Team Andrew successfully finished his treatment in the Spring of 2012, but SFAC has continued in his honor to help other kids being treated at Penn State Hershey Children s Hospital. Scoring for a Cure has helped raise over $14,000 since its inaugural season. All proceeds from this year s Scoring for a Cure campaign will be donated to the Four Diamonds Fund.
The mission of the Four Diamonds Fund is to conquer childhood cancer by assisting children treated at Penn State Hershey Children s Hospital. Any family being treated for pediatric cancer at Penn State Hershey Children s Hospital is automatically eligible to receive support. The money raised by the Four Diamonds Fund may be used by families to offset the cost of treatment that insurance does not cover. It helps provide support programs for patients and their families. The fund also allows the medical team to conduct pediatric cancer research through start up grants at the Four Diamonds Cancer Research Institute. Since its creation in 1972, Four Diamonds has supported nearly 4,000 children and families and supported a diverse platform of childhood cancer research at Penn State Children s Hospital, seeking improved treatments and cures to benefit kids around the world. WHY WE NEED RESEARCH An estimated 16,000 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year that s about 43 kids every day. Childhood cancer survival rates have significantly improved to 80% over the past 40 years; however, 1 in 5 children will still die from their disease within 5 years of diagnosis. Children tend to respond better to chemotherapy than adults. However, they are more likely to be negatively affected by radiation therapy. Both of these therapies, in addition to surgery for cancer treatment, are likely to lead to long term side effects in children. Currently, there are more than 420,000 survivors of childhood cancer in the U.S., with that number expected to reach 500,000 by Only 4% of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding is solely dedicated to childhood cancer. The NIH is the country s largest funder of medical research.
Where are they now? AJ Frantz AJ was diagnosed two days before Christmas of 2008 with Tcell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He went through treatment from his freshman year of high school until right before he graduated in Before being diagnosed AJ was captain of his premiere soccer club, The Reading Rage, taking his team to Nationals in the fall of He was also a member of his high school JV and Varsity soccer team his freshman year as well. After diagnosis, AJ went through 6 months of intense chemotherapy and radiation to the brain. Because of the side effects from these treatments AJ could no longer go to school. Liz Clark became his home bound instructor and helped AJ to finish his freshman year from home. He also developed peripheral neuropathy in his arms and legs and needed help walking and climbing stairs. Intense chemotherapy ended in June. Instead of weekly chemo treatments he would get a break and visit the hospital once a month for those treatments, plus he would get a spinal tap with chemo as well. This would go on for the next 3 years. Before his sophomore year, AJ began physical therapy to strengthen his legs, so he could play soccer again. Our insurance informed us they would only cover 8 sessions. We knew he would need a lot more than 8 sessions to be able to play soccer again. That's when Four Diamonds stepped in and said they would cover anything insurance wouldn't. AJ worked very hard 3 days a week with a therapist for the next 6.5 months. Junior year quickly approached, and AJ finally was ready. He played JV and saw Varsity time. AJ continued to play with his premiere club and get his legs stronger and his feet quicker. In the summer before his senior year he made another trip to Nationals with his premiere team. His senior year, AJ was a starter on Varsity and helped his team capture the 2011 County Championship title. The team also played in the 2011 PIAA Class AA State Championship game, sadly losing to Lancaster Mennonite 2 1. After graduation, AJ attended Millersville University and in the fall he received The Courageous Athlete Award, presented by the Central Chapter of PA Athletics Hall of Fame.
During his time at MU he was a member of the Men's Club Soccer team and made two trips to Club Nationals with his team. AJ was chosen to be president of the club his senior year. AJ graduated from Millersville University in 2016 with a degree in Occupational Safety and Health Administration. After graduation, he joined his family in Wilmington North Carolina and within a month was hired by Brunswick County as a Risk Management Technician in their Government building. AJ is still involved with soccer playing for a men's league as well as a co ed league with his sister Lauren. He even gave coaching a try for a U 10 youth team. Since moving to Wilmington, AJ has celebrated 5.5 years off treatment and is now considered cured! We know our family is very blessed to be able to share AJ's success with you all. But none of his success story would be possible without the doctors and nurses at Hershey Medical Center and the Four Diamonds Fund. They made sure we never saw a bill, which meant we could focus on our family and making sure AJ got the help he needed. I would like to take this opportunity for my family and I to thank Tulpehocken and the community for all your support. Scoring for a Cure is one of the many reasons Four Diamonds can help families like ours and many others for years to come. A special thank you to Liz Clark for starting Scoring for a Cure way back in 2009 and for keeping this amazing campaign going! It truly is inspiring and makes us so proud to see how the students are involved. We will always be TULPY PROUD! The Aj Frantz Family
Our Hero Riley Rejniak Riley Rejniak was 4 years old when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. It is an aggressive cancer that started out as a tumor on his right adrenal gland and spread to his bone marrow. His cancer was discovered after going to the doctor for leg and hip pain. Riley went through 6 rounds of Chemotherapy, surgery to remove tumor, Stem Cell Transplant, 12 rounds of Radiation, 5 rounds of Immunotherapy and much more. Throughout his whole treatment Riley has always tried to have a smile on his face no matter how hard treatment was. Riley is now 6 and fought for a year and a half. On July 30 th, 2018 Riley was declared in remission!!! Ashley Rejniak Tulpehocken Class of 2007
