Dear Parents, The week began with our 1 st XI making Royal Russell history as they beat Millfield School 2-1 to win the ISFA Boodles Cup for the first time. They were cheered on by a coach load of Junior School supporters who were in good voice throughout the night alongside the more professional chants from the Senior School crowd. Thank you to all those who supported the team on the night. It was certainly an occasion our pupils will never forget. You can see the winning goal here. On Tuesday afternoon we had a lively discussion at the Parents Forum with a range of topics discussed from Car Parking to Swimming. My thanks to the class reps who attended and to Mrs Campbell for taking the notes that will be distributed to you by your class rep. Wednesday saw my whistle in action as I spent the day with the U10 Girls Hockey team getting soaked in the IN2 Tournament. They played very well and with a little more resolute defending could have really troubled the top sides. This afternoon I was to be able to support Mrs Burton Smith as we deputised for the Chaplain during the Lower Junior Mothering Service. The Chapel was packed with standing room only and I was extremely proud of how well the children read and sung during the service. We also took a moment to remember those who lost their lives in the Westminster tragedy this week. Finally for this week a plea to all parents who drive in to school.please turn off your engines when you are parked in the car park. Best wishes for the weekend and I hope you have a wonderful Mothering Sunday. Mr James C Thompson PS Don t forget the clocks go forward this weekend and we all lose an hours sleep!

Visit from theatre company PERFORM The Great Fire of London On Thursday this week Year 2 were transported back in time to The Great Fire of London, courtesy of a wonderful time traveller called Devora, from the educational theatre company 'Perform!' Together they became flames, burning buildings, bakers and observers of the events of those fateful few days in September They were encouraged to think about the special objects they would save from the fire, just as Samuel Pepys did with his precious cheese! They made a wonderful soundscape of noises from that time: crackling fire, yelling people, running feet, water pouring from leather buckets and the explosions made by gunpowder used as firebreaks Devora really helped to bring history to life and the children were able to describe the atmosphere in the city of London, with wonderful use of their senses. Their knowledge of the period really shone through. 1666

Year 6 Visit to Kew Gardens On Tuesday, Year 6 spent a fantastic day exploring the grounds and conservatories at Kew Gardens. The sun shone as we viewed The Hive and treetop walkway, after which we were taught some fascinating facts about plants found in the Rainforest. The children wowed us with their existing knowledge and listened intently to new information, asking sensible and relevant questions to Kew staff. We enjoyed tasting some different spices, handling an antique seed from the Seychelles and some of us even saw an iguana up close and personal! An enjoyable day was had by all! Well done Year 6.

This week, Years 4 and 5 were very lucky to have a visit from the ARC Animal Conservation Centre. The children were introduced to Blue, the bearded dragon, Turbo, the giant African Land snail and Tortuga the Leopard Tortoise. They then completed a quiz to find out each of the animals habitats, predators and diets. After learning all of these interesting facts, a very shy pigmy hedgehog made an appearance, along with a scorpion! Although, thankfully, he stayed in his box! The ARC will be running an Animal Rangers Easter Camp at Royal Russell school over the holidays where they are hoping to bring along even more animals for the children to meet. To find out more and to book a place, please visit,

Junior Music 17 young guitarists from the Junior School took part in the Bromley Music Festival on 12 th March. The experience of performing, including valuable comments given after by the adjudicator who marks the performance, is so important for confidence and performance skills. There were many medal winners (see below). Aidan Bradley also won a wonderful cup for being voted "most promising guitar player" and the Senior Guitar Group won the ensemble trophy. The rules allowed the guitar group to include two children playing recorders, which added greatly to the Tudor period pieces being played. Bromley Music Festival Aidan Bradley Well done to all the guitarists involved Max King (1 st ), Ava Barton (2 nd ), Aarav Shah (3 rd ), Anya Cornick, Joey Bone, Alex Iyaniwura (1 st ), Lorenzo Shone (2 nd ), Rohit Nair (3 rd ), Isaac Eley, Dhruv Joshi, Luca Bradbury, Isandros, Hannah Kaminski (1 st ), Aidan Bradley (1 st ), Andrew Paralarajancroos (2 nd ), Oliver Dixon (3 rd ), Diya Patel (4 th ) Mr Davies said the benefits for the children taking part in these music festivals cannot be underestimated. Apart from the enjoyment of the occasion for both the children and their families, who come to see them play, the experience of performing, including valuable comments given after by the adjudicator who marks the performance, is so important for confidence and performance skills. Playing in music festivals also means pieces to be played are practiced to a much higher degree than may otherwise be done, increasing the playing level of the child in doing so. The festivals are also ideal for trying out an exam piece with feedback by the adjudicator before the exam itself. Although taking part is more important than the competitive nature of

Congratulations to our 1st XI Football team on winning the Boodles ISFA National Cup Final 2-1! Royal Russell is the first team in ISFA history to win the National Sixes and National Cup On Monday evening our 1XI made history by beating Millfield 2-1 at Stadium MK. Our School united and brought 350 supporters, including some of our younger Juniors, to the match; the fantastic support was instrumental for our players and carried them to victory. We went 1-0 after some fantastic play from Matt Weller and Rhys Norrington-Davies forced their center back to turn the ball into his own net. Millfield equalised before half time, which their possession warranted, Lochlan Greenwood initially made an excellent save but the rebound was turned in by the Millfield player. At half time we made extensive changes to our shape and we took control of the match. Following an incredible run from Princewill Ogunmekan through the middle of the Millfield team, Ross Obazee was put through on goal and he finished with aplomb into the top corner. We had more chances to put the game to bed which we squandered, and although MIllfield through the proverbial kitchen sink at us, we held strong and secured the victory. WELL DONE XI!

National Schools trampoline Finals in Newcastle The U11 Intermediate team of Jasmine, Eivie, Amber & Amy travelled to Newcastle for the finals. They had already qualified through 2 rounds so this was the grand final. The girls bounced amazingly well, fantastically stylish routines and showed significant improvements from the Southern Zonal finals. After a long and intense wait we found out we had finished 2nd in the country!! A simply outstanding result, we have never won a medal at the National finals!! Thank you to the parents & coaches who supported the team.

Bronze medals at Croydon Schools Finals After winning the Croydon School s Tournament Qualifier a couple of weeks ago, the U11 girls worked hard to integrate two new players in preparation for the finals last Friday. Six minute matches one way meant that every pass counted and the pressure was on to score goals as quickly as possible! The first match against Ridgeway School was very close with goals being scored by both teams. With a minute to go, it was 3-3 and unluckily Ridgeway scored to make it 3-4. The team then played some fantastic netball and 100% effort was demonstrated by every player! This payed off as they convincing won their next 4 matches against Cumnor House, Atwood, Greenvale and Elmwood. The girl s then fought so hard in their last game against a very strong Croydon High team who unfortunately pulled away and beat us 3-1. Royal Russell finished 3 rd overall in Croydon, receiving bronze medals. Well done!

Royal Russell Swimming Gala vs Keston Great swimming from the swim team against Keston, lots of great races & wins too!!

House Netball Competition Y5/6 started their house competition with wins for Canterbury & Exeter! More matches next week
