Vote here, but please only vote once: As I write this, it is morning, the sun is out, and the temperature is to be in the 60s today. Thanksgiving has now past, but leftovers remain. I look back on the past year, and all I can think is how fast it went. This time last year, Bryan and Emma had announced they were stepping down after 3 years of being the Chapter Directors, and Andy and Sherri Smith, our then District Directors (who were transitioning to Region Directors), were concerned they might have to step in and run the Chapter until someone stepped up or the Chapter was dissolved. Many of us met at Bryan s house to discuss this serious situation. Did you know that two Colorado Chapters dissolved and shut down this year? GWRRA Region F, Colorado Chapter J, Aurora, CO DECEMBER 2017

2 The Director s Chair (cont.) I reluctantly became Chapter Director in January 2017, not really knowing what to expect from the job, from GWRRA, or from the running joke that it only takes 15 minutes per month! I really was very reluctant. I have a busy family schedule and I work full-time, and I just wasn t sure how I could do everything, and I didn t want to let anybody down. My first couple of Gatherings were uncomfortable for me shall we say. GWRRA is a family. The longer I m part of this thing we affectionately call GW, the more this becomes clear. I didn t have to do everything, and the only person I was going to let down was me. I finally started to get the hang of it, and I started to have fun! But the real story isn t me, it s my team. Every member of the Chapter J Team works every month to make J the best it can be. I and we are truly fortunate to have such a talented group of people to help keep the Chapter going strong! Thank you! We had great rides all year, too! Tucson, AZ for the Region Convention. An Eclipse Ride to South Dakota and Nebraska to ride the eclipse! A Hawaiian Holiday in Salida, CO for the District Convention. And Wing Ding in Grapevine, TX. Many other rides as well took place within the Colorado District. We have a fun Gathering every month, and the whole team contributes to make it what GW is all about: Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. Our annual Hummer of the Summer was a huge success! So much so, we ll keep the same format for next year: Breakfast to take advantage of the cooler temps in July and to give folks their afternoon to ride! And we ve already started planning 2018! In upcoming newsletters and at Chapter Gatherings, we ll have some exciting new announcements for Chapter J! As you ponder all of that and look forward to 2018, please consider joining us at: our monthly Gatherings; our Saturday Breakfast at Rosie s Diner; the multi-state Rally/Convention at Zermatt Lodge in Midway, UT; the soon-to-be-announced District Convention; any of our planned rides; and Wing Ding in Knoxville, TN. 3 Paul De Baca Chapter J Rider Educator Hello Wingers and Wingettes " First, let us not forget what brought us together in the first place THE WINTER IS COMING...OH DEAR, WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH ESMERALDA AND HERSHEL ( OUR BIKES )? SHOULD I PUT THEM AWAY OR RIDE THE WINTER OUT? This is the time of the year when we make that all important decision as to whether to put the bike away for the winter or to keep enjoying what we love to do...ride our bikes with the wind in our faces. There is no right or wrong to the decision, just one that we all are faced with throughout the year. If you decide to keep riding, here are a couple of tips that will help through the winter. Situation # 1. Tires seem to lose air. Solution: Tires do lose air normally, and sometimes the cold air affects them quite a bit. It is necessary to check them maybe more frequently than usual, and keep them aired up to recommended pressures. Yes, of course, check them on your TCLOCS inspection. Some experts say this should be done daily instead of just when you ride. Check your tires for dry-rotting also. Situation # 2. A flat tire occurs while riding. Solution: Hold on tightly to the handlebars and gradually slow down while moving to the shoulder of the road. The key is to employ smooth, gradual movements while trying to get the bike as far away from traffic as possible. Once you are safely parked, it's time to call for roadside assistance. If you have Rescue Plus from GWRRA, just give them a call and they will know how to assist you. If you have another type of roadside assistance, make sure you tell them that if a tow truck is needed, you need one capable of tying down, and transporting a motorcycle. Proper tie down method is in your Gold Book. Situation # 3. Your bike runs out of fuel. Solution: Running out of fuel is mostly preventable. On most modern Hondas, with EFI, the bike's fuel gauge and low fuel warning light give ample warning when it is time to fill up. Carbureted motorcycles might not have a fuel gauge, but usually have a reserve tank that can be utilized with a simple turn of the petcock valve ( hey old schoolers, remember this ), assuming the valve was originally positioned to draw fuel from the primary tank. If your bike runs out of fuel while riding, pull in the clutch, signal your intention, and find a safe place to pull off the road. Go to your roadside assistance again or get your walking game on. Once fuel is in your tank, your bike will be ready to run whether the bike has EFI or carburetors. Situation # 4. A dead battery. Solution: For some riders who are in a hurry, the fix is a set of jumper cables and another vehicle. There are other products on the market that do quite well. I have a small gadget called a Weego that jump starts bikes, cars, and trucks. If you are unsure of how to properly jump start a bike, then call your roadside assistance. Of course, check your cables and connections and clean them if they are dirty and tighten them if they are loose. Once you start the engine, be sure to ride the bike for 30 minutes to an hour to allow it to charge the battery via the bike's alternator. It is recommended that you ride the bike and keep the RPM's up above 3000 during this time. Just letting the bike sit and idle will not charge the battery. Also, it is recommended that you keep the bike on a battery trickle charger when not riding. (cont next page) GWRRA Region F, Colorado Chapter J, Aurora, CO DECEMBER 2017

Last but not least, and maybe most important, you went to the local dealer to buy a shirt and came home with a new motorcycle. :-) :-) Solution: Let's call this a celebration rather than a situation...yea!!!!! If you have done this without consulting someone, get down on your knees and plea for forgiveness and then take them for a ride...yippee!!!!! Of course, these things can happen in any riding season, it just seems to be more prevalent in the winter. Let this be the winter where you don't just let a little cold stop you from doing what we love to do...ride our bikes. I want to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a Happy Holiday season filled with safety, peace, happiness, and love from Family and Friends. P.S. Don't forget the Children's Hospital Toy Run 3 Dec. You must register at a Denver Metro Harley Davidson dealership to get an armband for entry into the park. A group of GWRRA chapter J riders are meeting at Rosie's ( Iliff and Blackhawk ) at 7:30 to have breakfast and then all ride to the park at 8:30. Please get registered and come and join us for a wonderful sharing and giving to the kids at the Hospital. See you there. Chapter A Chapter Q Chapter J Gathering Chapter G Mystery Dinner Ride Recipe of the Month THUMBPRINT COOKIES Ingredients 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts (opt) 2/3 cup any flavor fruit jam 1/4 teaspoon salt Directions 1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets. 2. Separate egg, reserving egg white. Cream butter or margarine, sugar, and egg yolk. 3. Add vanilla, flour and salt, mixing well. 4. Shape dough into balls. Roll in egg white, then walnuts. Place on cookie sheets about 2 inches apart. With thumb, dent each cookie. Put jelly or preserves in each thumbprint. 8 Motorist Awareness Ambassador Tom Houdek Chapter J Christmas Lights Well, as I write this on Thanksgiving Day weekend, I thought it would be most appropriate to pass on a heartfelt thank you to the Chapter J family for your support of the GWRRA Motorist Awareness program. I m especially thankful for those who came out and supported the chapter s Motorist Awareness events we held this year. They were new and fun experiences for all of us and I expect we ll do a few more of them in I m also thankful for those who took the time over the course of the year to talk with family, friends, and strangers along the way about sharing the road with motorcycles. Our positive interactions with the general public helps to raise motorist awareness and can also be just the thing that helps a motorist personally identify with a motorcyclist on the road. Of course, we all know that motorcycle riding comes with an inherent risk and we can t take anything for granted. With the Motorist Awareness program, we must also do our part as motorcyclists to ensure our fellow motorists can see us, that we stay out of their blind spots and that we do our best to mitigate high risk situations. One thing that we can do is to make ourselves more visible. So what better time than now, as we prepare for Christmas and the holiday season, to send Santa a copy of your motorcycle accessory wish list. Ask the jolly old man for a new set of LED headlights or running lights, some back-off lights or a brake light modulator, a new high viz jacket or reflective helmet, or maybe even same safety chrome and a couple of flags. Anything to catch the eye and attention of a distracted motorist to help ensure they see you. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from my family to yours.
