The Moonshine The Official Newsletter of the Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge 467 October 2018 Lodge Adviser Curt Morrison To All My Brother Arrowmen; Since January of 2017, I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve all of you as your Lodge Adviser. I ve been able to get to know many of you, both youth and adult, who by your unselfish service make the Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge one of the most amazing organizations to be a part of. It s due to your efforts thru the donation of that most precious commodity, your time, that we as a Lodge have been able to provide numerous hours of service to your Community, your Veterans, the Hawkeye Area Council and your camp, Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation. During this time it has been my privilege to have worked with 2 amazing young men, as Lodge Chief, and their LEC committees, who shouldered the huge responsibility of guiding their fellow lodge members on this successful journey. They committed a lot of their time and effort in doing this, and along the way I have seen them mature into outstanding gentlemen. It has been an honor to have been able to work with them in their service to all of you. As my term ends with the end of 2018, I want all of you to welcome our new Lodge Adviser Sarah Harris to this position. She will be helping our youth to guide the your Lodge for the next two years and I know that you will welcome her as I do with all your hearts. And I look forward to the service that I know we all as Arrowmen will be doing in the future. Since I first became a Lodge member 12 years ago, I have struggled to put into words what it is that keeps me involved in the Lodge. Is it the Work Days at Camp- no. Is it the 4 times I ve served as an Elongomat- no. Is it because I received my Brotherhood or was honored with my Vigil- no. Is it the responsibilities that I have been asked to perform at the Chapter or Lodge level no. As you can see I still struggle with this when people ask me why! Actually it is all of you!! It s the good friends that I have been allowed to make who enjoy serving others as I do. It is the time spent in fellowship with all of you that makes being a member of this Lodge an honor that I cannot express in any words to those who have not experienced it. And for that I am truly grateful to all of you!!! Thank you for all that you have done & will continue to do! WWW D. Curt Morrison Lodge Chief Jacob Lorenzen LodgeChief@ChoGun.org We have accomplished a lot this year. From running our normal lodge event, to special events like NOAC and MINI NOAC, to hosting Section Conclave, I want to thank all of those who helped make all of this happen. I am looking forward to next year and some new things that it brings. Lets finish out this year strong. Jacob

Hello Arrowman, If you did not attend the Section Conclave, then you missed a great weekend of training, activities, fellowship, and fun. This was second largest Section Conclave and was only out done by the first which was also hosted by our Lodge five years ago. A huge thank you to the many Lodge members who provided service to this event. From the people who did the parking, guiding of Lodges, working in the dining hall (where the food was phenomenal) to those who worked activity areas. The Pow-Wow was awesome and was enjoyed by a majority of the people who attended. I believe our Lodge set the Standard for upcoming Lodges to meet when it comes to running a Section Conclave. Yours in Brotherhood, Paul Swanson Activities Chairman Jacob Cannon Activities@ChoGun.org The final Lodge activity for the year is Winter Banquet. It will be held at St. Mary s Church in Solon on Friday, January 4th, Doors will open at 5:30 PM with dinner at 6:30 PM. Following dinner we will have guest speakers, presentation of Awards and Recognitions, and an Assist the Arrowman benefit auction. Please plan on attending for great food, fellowship, and the opportunity to witness our Brothers receiving recognition in the Lodge and their Chapter. We can also help our youth brothers by bringing non-regalia items to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Assist the Arrowman fund. A message from the Awards & Rec. Adviser: We are quickly closing in on the time for the Winter Banquet. Now is the time to think who you feel our people who are worthy of the awards that Lodge gives out each year. The Red Arrow Award which is for non-oa members who have exhibited outstanding service to the Lodge. The James E West Award The Cho-Gun- Mun-A-Nock Lodge honors those select Arrowmen that have rendered outstanding service to the lodge over the period of several years with the James E. West Fellowship Award. Presentation is limited to those Arrowmen that have demonstrated the highest standards of excellence and have the most outstanding service records in the Order of the Arrow. Nomination is open to both youth and adults. Founders Award The Founder's Award was created to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to the lodge. The award is reserved for an Arrowman who demonstrates to fellow Arrowmen that he or she memorializes in his or her daily life the spirit of achievement as described by founder E. Urner Goodman. All of the forms for these nominations can be found on the Lodge website and are due by November 1 st. Please completed to me at pswanson@goodwillheartland.org Yours in Brotherhood, Swanny Congrats to the 2019 Lodge Officers! Lodge Chief: Clint Hill Vice-Chief of OA Affairs: Jonathan Schlotfelt Vice-Chief of BSA Affairs: Evan Rossman Secretary: Sean Ehlert Treasurer: Isaac Vrba

Lodge Secretary Ben Eden Inductions Chairman Caleb Brandauer First off, congratulations to the newly elected Lodge and Chapter Officers! I hope you all learn a lot during your term of service to the Lodge and you get to meet a lot of new friends. After two years serving as the Secretary for the Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge, I can say it has been the highlight of my Scouting career. If it wasn t for this position I would not be in the place I am today because of the skills I have developed, people I have met and experiences I ve had. As the Secretary; I got to work closely with my Adviser Bruce Dolder, who showed me how to use LodgeMaster and how to stay generally organized during registration at our major events. Working with Bruce was easily the best part of the job! (Along with getting to stay in the Lodge House during the rainy Conclaves!) As my term comes to an end I can say that I look forward to seeing everyone s smiling face at a work project at the next Conclave instead of from behind a computer! Congratulations to Sean Ehlert, who will be the Lodge Secretary for the upcoming year as I turn 21 and age out of my position. I am sure he will get to learn a lot as the Secretary as I did and I hope he gets to meet and learn a lot to new faces. The best part of being the Lodge Secretary was getting to see the behind the scenes of the Lodge and getting to learn just how much paperwork there is in making an organization like ours run smoothly. We still have a little bit left in the year and I hope to see everyone at Winter Banquet and at next year s events! Ben Eden We just had a very successful conclave with 58 candidates completing their Ordeal. We had a lot of help from general membership as well as our Elangomats! Thank you to those who were able to help us this conclave! We also had 18 Ordeal members complete their Brotherhood this past conclave, including your future Inductions Chairman: Gunnar Swan! I would like to congratulate all of the new Ordeal and Brotherhood members on their great accomplishment, and hope to see them stay active in our lodge. This upcoming Fall Fellowship, in November, there will be a third Brotherhood opportunity for our Ordeal members which have been unable to attend either of the Spring and Fall Conclaves in I hope to see as many of you there as possible. While on the topic of fellowship, we will be having Elangomat training. If you have not taken the class before, I highly recommend taking the class. It s only about an hour, and the information you learn is actually very interesting. The next training session will be held at the upcoming Fall Fellowship, in November, then again at Spring Fellowship. If you need extra motivation, you can earn a pair of white beads for being an Elangomat! There are not a lot of people with these beads. To earn a pair of beads, you need to have taken the class at fellowship, Elangomat for an Ordeal clan, and stay in contact with your clan and help them on their journey to Brotherhood membership. If 30% of your clan s ordeals come back and do their Brotherhood conversion within a year, you will receive your set of white beads. And, unlike some other beads, you can earn as many of these as you want, if you complete the requirements of course. Caleb Brandauer

Vice Chief of BSA Affairs Theodore Collins As 2018 ends in a few months, I would like to say it been an honor serving as your Vice Chief of BSA Affairs. However, my work will continue in the lodge on as the 2019 Publications Chairman and Adviser in Training for Inductions, to take on the role as co-adviser in late I would like to congratulate the new Ordeal and Brotherhood members and my fellow Vigil candidates. For the new ordeal members, the best way to get involved is go to chapter meetings. They are usually on the 2 nd Thursday of each month from 7:00-8:00pm. If you live in Red Cedar Chapter (Atkins, Belle Plaine, Blairstown, Cedar Rapids, Fairfax, Garrison, Hiawatha, Keystone, Luzerne, New Hall, Norway, Palo, Shellsburg, and Vinton.), you meet at Calvary Baptist Church, 5338 Johnson Ave SW Cedar Rapids, IA If you live in Three Rivers Chapter (Alburnett, Anamosa, Center Point, Central City, Clarence, Coggon, Lisbon, Lowden, Marion, Mechanicsville, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Springville, Stanwood, Troy Mills, Urbana, Walker, and Wyoming), you meet at Knights of Columbus Hall of Marion, 5650 Kacena Ave Marion, IA If you live in Old Capitol Valley Chapter (Iowa, Johnson, Washington and Cedar counties), you meet at First Christian Church of Coralville, 900 Lincolnshire Dr Coralville, IA At these meetings, there will be arrowmen that can help you through the requirements of Brotherhood to get you ready for Spring Conclave in May Another way to get involved is to attend our last event for 2018: Fall Fellowship at Howard. H Cherry Scout Reservation: Camp Waubeek November 3rd-4th. For 2018 Ordeal members, the event is FREE to attend! However, you still need to register online at cho-gun.org or complete and submit the printed registration form so we can plan for food. Come out at 8:00am for the November Camp Work Day then at 1:00pm, come over to Hanford Lodge for an afternoon of fun and fellowship. After dinner and presentations, we have a flag retirement ceremony to wrap up the evening. See the schedule of events. Theodore Collins Trading Post Chairman Kris Lukat TradingPost@ChoGun.org Arrowman, Hey guys! It s your Lodge Trading Post Chairman, Kristopher Lukat, here to give you an update on what s going on in, well, the trading post. In Old News: There were a lot of Ted Weiland DSA Flaps ordered over the weekend at conclave. We ordered 200 from the manufacturer, so those who missed the pre-order will be able to purchase some after we fill those. These should be here by the end of this month. In New News: We recently ordered more polos, jackets, vests and standard lodge flaps. All of those items should be here by the end of the month. For those of you who ordered clothing items, we will be getting that to you at Fall Fellowship. The lodge house staff will also have hoodies and sweatshirts for sale then. Remember we currently are discounting these items until the end of this year. We have taken some Order of the Arrow patches from our lodge house to the Council Office. So if you didn t have a chance to buy some of the 2018 NOAC Traders, 2018 Fundraiser sets, or 2018 Mini NOAC delegate sets, they are available for purchase there. Also, there are only a few of some of these patch sets left. Yours in Scouting, Kristopher Lukat

Red Cedar Chapter Chief Clint Hill OCV Chapter Chief Mason Erger Hello fellow Arrowmen, As we wrap the year, I ask you congratulate those new members to our lodge, those who have advanced, and those who have been called out for their vigil honor. I have enjoyed serving as your Chapter Chief this past year. Our 2019 Red Cedar Chapter Chief will be Dalton Hill. We plan on having a fun game meeting in December that will be a lot of fun with details to come. Clint Hill National Events Chairman Ben Alden NationalEvents@ChoGun.org Brothers, In March, Camp Wakonda will be hosting National Leadership Seminar. If you are a youth on the LEC, the Lodge will pay for you to attend. For those of you who do not know what NLS is, it is a leadership seminar that teaches you about different types of leaders, and what it means to be one. You can see people who have done the training if they have a small black triangle pin with a fleurde-lis or a black bead on their logchain. I would highly encourage going to NLS. It is a fun event to do and I would like to see you there doing it with me. Errol Alden Fellow Arrowmen, I would like to remind you that Fall fellowship is fast approaching, I hope you all intend on going as it is a wonderful event. For those of you who have been unable to make past conclaves for brotherhood advancement, this is a wonderful opportunity to advance to your next level of membership in the lodge! In the chapter events section of this article, I would like to announce that our November meeting we will be making chokers in a new and interesting way so be sure to attend! Our December meeting we will have a toys for tots drive so be sure to start thinking about that too! And as always both meetings will be closed with a time of food and fellowship! In other news, I would like to personally congratulate Caleb Brandauer as our upcoming 2019 chapter chief I believe that he will perform with incredible efficiency and will raise our chapter to new heights! I would like to thank you for two great years of being chapter chief and hope that you would forgive any shortcomings I may have had during my time in the position. The year isn t over yet though Arrowmen, so I intend to go out with a bang. Thanks for the great run! Mason J. Erger Congrats to Christopher Merck, one of two inaugural recipients of the Section C-3A R.D. Dunkin Service in Leadership Award. He was presented this award during breakfast Sunday morning at conclave.

Three Rivers Chapter Chief Patrick Conway There will be pizza at the December Three Rivers chapter meeting, so be sure to stop by for a night of fun and fellowship on December 13th. Our annual chapter campout will be held on the first weekend of February in Hanford Lodge. We will perform a service project in the morning and will return to Hanford Lodge to work on regalia in the afternoon. There will be fun and movies throughout both evenings, hope to see you there.
