It seems that Conclaves just get better and better, and this one surely will be no exception! Filled to the brim with Cheerful Service and Elections, you definitely won t want to miss out on this upcoming Conclave! Ordeal Announcement Ordeal Candidates, please make sure that you bring a sleeping bag, ground cloth, canteen, and a readiness for the challenges with which you will be confronted. Do not be discouraged, you will love every minute of it! Memories that you will make during your Ordeal are ones that you will hold onto dearly. What to Do? Who s to say that a Conclave is only for Ordeal Members?! There are plenty of opportunities that everybody in the Lodge can partake in! Not only is there Cheerful Service, but there are Patch Auctions, Training Sessions, Officer/Chapter Elections, Elangomat opportunities, and Brotherhood Inductions. 2 What is Kashapiwigamak? Join us on Saturday, October 1, 2011, in the Lodge at Camp Wokanda for KASHAPIWIGAMAK, a full day of learning Native American culture, craft, song, dance and fun for Boy Scouts and Venturers (guys and girls non-oa members are welcome). You ll have a chance to learn different types of beading, regalia making, drumming, and singing at the drum. Native dance for women and men will be taught, plus other activities could include making chokers, four different kinds of beadwork, medicine bags, a parafleche knife case or bag, and more. You can work on the Indian Lore merit badge and Venturing award requirements. Order of the Arrow members can find out how to get more involved with our Lodge; troop and crew members can learn how to create meaningful ceremonies for their own units or Cub Scout packs. All of your supplies and evening meal are provided. You do not have to register/attend with a unit, but all youth less than 14 years of age must be accompanied by a leader/parent. (One leader per group of youth is OK for Schedule: 8:00 am: Check-in at Lodge 8:30 am: Opening 9 - noon: Classes Noon 12:30: Lunch (bring your own lunch) 12:30-5:00: Classes 5:30-6:30: Chuckwagon dinner provided to all 6:30-7: Free time or additional class 7 8:30: If you dare, dance the Ring of Fire! 9:00: Depart camp (or camp with your unit; must reserve site or cabin with Peoria Park Dist.) the day, but observe Safe Scouting rules for transportation and camping.) Can you feel the heat as you dance the ring of fire? Section Conclave Section Conclave is an event that occurs only once per year. Attendance is spread between the seven Lodges in our Section. This year Section Conclave is being hosted at Camp Lewallen. Our Lodge hopes to bring a large contingent this year. This Section Conclave is taking place during the weekend of October 14th to the 16th. Now, What happens at a Section Conclave?, you ask. Well, there are ceremonies competitions, drum and dance competitions, trainings on various OA subjects including American Indian Activities, Section Officer elections, inter- Lodge games and activities, great food, patch trading, fellowship, AND MORE! An interesting side fact is that in 2012, Wenasa Quenhotan will be hosting Section Conclave at Ingersoll Scout Reservation so come and gain experience as we prepare to host in September 2012! By going to Section Conclave, you have an opportunity to learn many interesting things about the Order of the Arrow. You will have an experience that cannot be had outside of this event. 3 Greetings My Brothers, During the week of August 1 st through the 6 th, there was a contingent of scouts and scouters who drove to North Carolina. Why you ask? Simple. They went for one of the best experiences that the Order of the Arrow can offer nationally. This experience is Indian Summer, a week-long training seminar where the best that the OA has to offer comes together into one place. As Youth Contingent Leader, I had the honor of working with some amazing members of our Lodge. While there, we learned everything from Drumming and Singing to the Vigil Honor selection. I am pleased to say that we learned many things that will help our Lodge in years to come. Many of the delegates have even found new passions they would had never thought of before now. Our Drum, Ceremonies, and especially Dance programs have found opportunities to grow immensely and will truly bring our Lodge to even greater heights. Some delegates learned how to make crafts of many sorts. Some learned how to help make our ceremonial team members even better, while others picked up dancing anything from fancy to grass to chicken. Yes, I did just say the chicken dance. If you would like more information or have any questions, feel free to me at a.beck@wq23.org. Yes, Indian Summer was great, but it is also not the end of the line. Next year, in 2012, there will be a NOAC (National Order of the Arrow Conference). In 2015 there is another NOAC as well as the 100 th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow. The following year, 2016, brings yet another Indian Summer. All of these opportunities are amazing and completely worth it. I urge you to take part in at least one of these events. Alex Beck Page 3

4 Ask Kichkinet I heard that the Wenasa Quenhotan Lodge had two recognition awards available to be given out each year. What are they and who is eligible? They are the Lodge Service Award and the Founders Award, and are a form of recognition that is not directly tied to a member s Honor level. The Lodge Service Award can be given to one member each year. Only Brothers who have served on the Lodge Executive Committee are eligible for the Lodge Service Award. This award is reserved for those who go above and beyond their duties in the Lodge and have been outstanding members. Please consider those who have lived up to the ideals of the Order of the Arrow in their daily lives and who have been and will remain active in the Lodge. Any Brother may be recommended for the Founder's Award. There are no Honor requirements or minimum "length of service" conditions, however, the Lodge may present only TWO of these awards per year. Please recommend those Brothers who have a history of living the ideals of the Order of the Arrow in their daily lives, have been and currently are involved with the Lodge, and whom you reasonably expect to remain active with the Lodge, so as to serve as shining examples of cheerful service and dedication to Scouting and the Order of the Arrow. For a list of members who have received these awards in the past and for forms to nominate members for this year, please see the WQ23 website. Printed forms will be available at the Fall Conclave. Voting for these awards is done by the youth at the Fall Conclave. A Note from the Lodge Adviser This past summer has been one of the most exciting and productive summers in recent memory, not only for the Lodge but for myself personally. Lest someone be concerned that this is purely a personal reflection, I can assure you it is not and its relevancy will soon be clear. I have just returned from a three week tour in Europe. I took with me a supply of W.D. Boyce Council strip patches in the hopes of meeting fellow Scouts. I was fortunate to find four groups of uniformed Scouts; England, Croatia, Poland, and Luxembourg. I was able to trade patches or pins and got photographs of each group. While this is significant in and of itself, there is an item of even greater significance. While each Scouting organization has a similar bond through Baden Powell, we, here in the United States have something else of which no other Scouting group can boast. You should have guessed it by now, the Order of the Arrow. We have not only a unique group but also a unique opportunity, cheerful service. There is a cheerful service that you can perform and perform now. Come to the Fall Conclave. I know that by the time you receive this, the Conclave will be close and planning may be difficult, but one of the most important things you can do this fall will be to attend the Conclave. I know that for some of you that are new to the Order, all you can really remember is the ordeal of the Ordeal. I promise you that as a member, as opposed to a candidate, a Conclave has a different flavor. While you still provide service, the richness of the experience will be magnificent. Your Conclave experience this time will give you time to reflect on your Ordeal. For those of you who are eligible, this is the time to seal your membership by taking the Brotherhood. 5 My OA Trail Crew Experience (As told by Brandon Fricke) My name is Brandon Fricke and I am your Activities Chairman for the term. I want to inform you of an opportunity that you won t want to miss! This summer I had the chance to go to Philmont Scout Ranch through the Order of the Arrow Trail Crew (OATC) program. I had the time of my life and I am so happy that I went. The OATC program is a two week program for Arrowmen between the ages of 16 and 20. During the first week of the program you and your crew work on building trails and switchbacks that will be utilized by thousands of Scouts in the years to come. The second week of the program you go on a trek through the Philmont backcountry that has been designed by you and your crewmates. I had a fantastic time with this program. Not only did I meet and learn from Scouts from across the country, but my crew was able to complete 250 feet of trail and a switchback, and backpack 50+ miles while hitting five major peaks at Philmont. All of this for only $200 and travel costs. What a bargain! If you have the chance to go to OATC or any other OA High Adventure program next summer, DO IT! You will love it and remember the experience for the rest of your life. The time where we join together as a Lodge to help improve the camp that we all love so much, Fall Conclave. But, what if you were able to cheerfully serve the Lodge year round, rather than just twice a year? The method is simple: Become involved with Lodge Leadership. There is truly nothing more rewarding than the feeling of satisfaction that what you re doing is making a huge impact to the Lodge itself. Acquiring a leadership role in the Lodge really isn t very difficult. There are actually several ways to do so. The simplest is by becoming your Troop s OA Rep. But, if you feel that you are meant to serve a higher purpose, then we d highly suggest that you run for a Chapter position. Chapters are the second level of the Pyramid of Leadership in the OA. By having Chapters, our Lodge can function more as a whole, without the worries of sacrificing the needs of certain areas within our Lodge. And, of course, one of the most diverse methods of serving the Lodge is by joining the LEC (Lodge Executive Committee). The LEC consists of the four Officers who oversee a large group of Chairmen that are in charge of different key points to run a successful Lodge. These Chairmen can oversee tasks ranging from Drum and Dance, to OA Events, to even creating items for purchase at Lodge Functions. The great diversity of ways to have a leadership position within the Lodge almost guarantees that there s a job that needs your expertise! So, if you feel that you are up to the rewarding challenge of leading the Lodge, then express your interests to the current Lodge Leaders at the upcoming Fall Conclave. 7 Patches Wanted! Do you have numerous patches that are just cluttering up your shelf space? Well, if this is the case, then WQ23 has the perfect opportunity for you! If anyone has old patches that they no longer are interested in, our Lodge could use them. Frequently, our Lodge will hold patch auctions to raise money for our Youth Subsidy Fund. This fund is used to help send Youth Arrowmen to the National OA Conference held every two years, and we would appreciate your generosity! Patches can be turned in at the Scout Office. So, if you feel that you are up to the task, we would greatly appreciate your donations to the Patch Auction. Who knows? Yours just might be the top-seller at Fall Conclave! Wonderful Words of Wisdom (WWW) The harder I work, the more luck I seem to have -Thomas Jefferson These are some very wise words from our 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson. But what exactly does he mean? What he is saying, is that if you re always working your hardest, you will find that one day it will be very rewarding. So even though you may feel exhausted, and don t want to push any further, just remember that life will present some irksome tasks and weighty responsibilities, but some day you will be rewarded for all of the work that you put in. 9 ORDEAL CANDIDATE INFORMATION Wenasa Quenhotan Lodge #23 invites all Scouts who were called out as candidates for the Order of the Arrow to enter into our brotherhood by completing their Ordeal at the 2011 Fall Conclave on September 16-18, 2011, at Ingersoll Scout Reservation. The fee for the Ordeal is $ This price covers meals, an event patch, a Lodge flap, a sash, a handbook, and dues for the 2011 dues year. Candidates are urged to pre-register and pay in advance to be sure there will be enough items for all new members to get through check in. Please use the enclosed registration form. Check in begins at 5:30 PM Friday. All candidates must at the Trailblazer Pavilion at Ingersoll Scout Reservation (located at the bottom of the Dining Hall hill) by 8:00pm on Friday evening for the Pre-Ordeal Ceremony. Ordeal candidates must be in attendance the entire weekend to become a member of the Order of the Arrow.Ordeal Candidates should NOT bring cell phones, ipods, or any other electronic devices or games! There will be a short training program giving you further insight into the meaning of the Ordeal and which covers the history and purpose of our Order. It will also explain the administration and organization of the Wenasa Quenhotan Lodge as well as how YOU can become involved. Departure time from the Conclave will be approximately 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. IMPORTANT: All Ordeal candidates will need to bring the following items for the weekend: Old work clothes (should be worn on arrival) Sleeping bag Ground cloth (large) Poncho or Rain Suit Work gloves Bring the following for later in the weekend: Class A uniform and extra clothes Toiletries (towel, soap, etc.) Tent for Saturday night We suggest you arrive wearing your work clothes, and that you have a separate package for toiletries, uniform, etc. You will need a tent for sleeping on Saturday night unless you already have sleeping arrangements provided. Please make sure you fill out the medical information portion of the registration coupon. The Lodge looks forward to welcoming many new members this spring. BROTHERHOOD INFORMATION If you took your Ordeal at the 2010 Fall Conclave, or before, we strongly encourage you to seal your membership in the Order by becoming a Brotherhood Member. To become a Brotherhood member, you must fulfill the following requirements: Ten months service as an Ordeal member. Registered active membership in Scouting. Registered active membership in the OA Memorize the Obligation, the Song of our Order, and the Admonition. It is important that you not only meet the these requirements, but that you are prepared for the Brotherhood. You must write a letter to the Lodge Secretary expressing your feelings. Include the following in your letter: Explain what you think the Obligation means. Describe how you have been fulfilling this Obligation of cheerful service in your troop and in your daily life, and how you have personally used your understanding of the traditions of the Ordeal to aid in this service. Describe the specific plans you have for rendering service to the Lodge in fulfillment of the new pledge you expect to take. At the completion of the Brotherhood ceremony, you will receive your Brotherhood sash and later that evening, you will receive your red-bordered flap (awarded only to Brotherhood and Vigil members) and a Brotherhood certificate to commemorate the occasion. Please remember to indicate your Brotherhood candidacy on the Conclave registration form. You may include your Brotherhood letter with the registration, or bring it with you to the Conclave.
