Back CONCLAVE 2010 On April the Southern Region Section 7B of Order of the Arrow held its largest event of the year at Camp Boddie which is nestled on the wild and wooded banks of Pamlico sound. All six lodges were represented bringing more than 1,200 Arrowmen and Brothers together for a very spirited weekend of competition, unique exhibits, patch trading, fellowship, and more hands-on opportunities than I ve ever seen assembled in one place. Conclave is the premier (and the largest) Order of the Arrow annual event of the year. It is also anticipated more than any other event that is usually held in the spring. Each year it rotates around the great state of North Carolina where all six Councils enjoy hosting this action packed weekend. Editor s note: More on the conclave inside. Summer Fellowship 2010 May We are looking forward to a great weekend. In addition to Brotherhood counseling and ceremonies, we will be doing some service work assisting in getting the camp ready for the summer, lunch at the waterfront followed by some water activities, and games. At 3pm, there will be a Broken Arrow Ceremony honoring John Julien, a long time member of the lodge. The Trading Post will be open all weekend so that those of you going to the National Jamboree can stock up on trading patches. This will be your last chance to get stuff before the jambo. Cheerfully serving southeastern North Carolina since

3 Greetings Brothers, The 2010 conclave was the first conclave that I had the privilege of attending. I was very impressed on how everything worked and was planned. The weekend was very fun I had a blast! The food was great and everything about the weekend was fun! The service project idea was great and was a lot of fun while you were doing the project. All of the ceremonies were great, the teams did very well! The whole medieval time theme worked out great from the costumes to the wall the whole theme was a success! And lastly the fellowship and the chance to meet new people was an awesome experience! Carson Goslee VC of Activities Lodge Chief I hope you all are doing well. Conclave was a great success. May fellowship is right around the corner and I encourage you all to attend. This fellowship will be a fun one. Carson, our VC of Activities has a lot of great events planned and I hope to see you out there. Also there will be a broken arrow ceremony to honor our fallen brother, John Jullian. As Lodge Chief, it is my job to make sure the lodge is running as smooth as possible. Any ideas you have to make lodge functions more organized or fun, please do not hesitate to contact me. My is wardstevens331@aol.com. Thank you, and let s make this best the best lodge year yet! Yours in brotherhood, Ward Stevens Lodge Chief Vice Chief of Activities 3 Greetings Brothers, Lodge Advisor We just experienced a wonderful Conclave. The spirit in our camp was great! The castle walls were a nice addition to our camp entrance. Our dancers and ceremonialist were busy competing. Our lodge was doing cooking demo that had fabulous doughnuts. Our lodge also had a crew competing in the cooking contest. Best of all might have been the service project that was completed. The section completed 1040 care packages to send our troops overseas. That s service provided to the men and women who are protecting our freedoms! Quest events were awesome and fun to watch in the afternoon. I for one was also able to visit with many friends and brothers from the other lodges. Thanks to all in our lodge that came and supported our members and myself. For those that could not go, please plan on going in 2011 to Camp Raven Knob on April 15th. Please attend our May fellowship and help support the lodge! Remember Cheerful Service! 4 Hello Brothers, I m glad I was able to spend that wonderful weekend at Conclave in Fellowship with you all and the other Lodges from SR-7B. It was a great experience that I wish to also enjoy next year at Camp Raven Knob for the 2011 Conclave! Hope you are all planning on going! Also, please be sure to register for the Summer Fellowship with the form included in this issue of the Nendawen. I know our VC of Activities as many great things in the lineup for that weekend. Lodge Secretary And lastly, please be sure to promote the Lodge with in your unit. Get our good deeds out there. Let everyone know what we do and about the fun we have! Michael Sanderson Lodge Secretary masnders901@yahoo.com VC of Indian Affairs Brothers, Those of you who did not go to this year s Cardinal Conclave missed out on a GREAT time and those of you who did go know what I am talking about! With our medieval theme, including our deluxe castle, flags, shields and costumes, we all looked pretty cool and had a royal time. Lots of participation by all of our Klahican Brothers made this Conclave especially fun. In regard to Indian Affairs at the Conclave, I am really proud to announce that our ceremonialists and dancers all performed well and both had lots of fun in their respective competitions. Our dance team this year was made up of Jeremy Ricks, Kevin Carr 4 and Shawn Whitley with Lee Pavlovich joining in for old time s sake. Although there were more dancers this year competing at Conclave than in past years, our dance team did a great job of performing and should be commended for their outstanding performance. Our dancers danced in the Grass dance competition, and although they did not place in the competitions this year, they had an excellent showing in both the Jr. and Sr. dance competitions. Thanks to our dancers for well representing Klahican Lodge. In regard to ceremonies, after lots of pre-conclave practicing, our Klahican Lodge ceremonialists competed against all the other Lodges in both the Pre-ordeal ceremony and the Brotherhood ceremony. We are proud to announce that our ceremony team placed in both competitions as follows: Team competitions: Pre-ordeal, 2nd place and Brotherhood, 1st place; Pre-ordeal individual competition: Nutiket-Will Bernard, 1st place; Allowat Sakima-Parker Luhring, 2nd Place; Meteu- Kevin Black, 3rd Place; and Kichkinet-Ward Stevens, 2nd Place and, for Brotherhood individual competitions all received 1st places as follows: Allowat Sakima-Kevin Black; Nutiket-Parker Luhring, Meteu-Will Bernard, and Kichkinet-Ward Stevens. Great job, Ceremonialists, you also well represented our Lodge. I would also like to say thank you to all the other Arrowmen who have contributed to the success of our Indian Affairs over the year, including advisors, back-up ceremonialists, judges, regalia makers, elangomats, and candidates that stood in for the competitions. It takes a lot of people to make our lodge successful in dancing and ceremonies. We continue to look for other Arrowmen that would like to be a part of the Lodge s Indian Affairs, whether in ceremonies, dancing, singing or any other aspect. If you are interested, please contact me at pwltroop232@aol.com. Our upcoming Fellowship in May will be a Brotherhood weekend, so please make sure to seal your membership in the lodge if you are eligible for Brotherhood. Also, many of our brothers showed an interest at the last Fellowship in regalia making. If you would like to get supplies to do your own beadwork or make your own breastplates, please

5 go to the Crazy Crow website at com and order your supplies and bring them to the Fellowship and we will help you get started on your regalia. You can order anything from moccasins to furs, beads to feathers and whole headdress kits if you want. Also, at Fellowship this May, we will have a special Broken Arrow ceremony starting at 3pm to honor our fallen brother and good friend, John Julien. Mr. Julien served our lodge for years and years and was best known for his contributions in the kitchen with the cook crew. His recipes are valued and much anticipated at our Fellowships. Please join us. If you plan on coming to the Broken Arrow Ceremony, and not the entire Fellowship, please RSVP to Mr. Taylor at jtaylor@ec.rr.com. If you would like to stay for dinner ($3.00) and Fellowship on Saturday evening, you are most welcome to do so. I look forward to seeing all of our Brothers at the May Fellowship and recapping our fun adventures at this year s Conclave. See you then. 8 BROTHERHOOD MEMBERSHIP* From the beginning of the Order in 1915, all members have been equal. There are no ranks. An Ordeal member is entitled to all the rights and privileges of membership in the Order. Yet, so important is the induction sequence that the Order strengthened it by creating Brotherhood membership. It is an opportunity for members to evaluate their past service to Scouting and to the lodge since their Ordeal induction. Brotherhood membership is sought by Arrowmen seeking to reaffirm their belief in the high purposes of the Order. Before becoming a Brotherhood member, each Arrowman makes a special effort to serve his troop and to learn about the Order. Each Brotherhood member commits himself to even more service to Scouting through the Order.... Brotherhood membership marks the completion of your induction into the Order of the Arrow. After at least 10 months of active service, you are eligible to seal your membership in the Brotherhood ceremony. You must meet five challenges before you can enter the Circle of the Brotherhood. When you are satisfied that you are meeting the first four, then complete the fifth challenge. 1. Memorize the signs of Arrow membership. Memorize the Obligation of the Order, which you received from Allowat Sakima Brotherhood Certification Print Name: Print Lodge & Chapter: 1. I have memorized the following: a. The Order of the Arrow Obligation b. The Order of the Arrow Song c. The Admonition d. The sign of Ordeal membership e. The Order of the Arrow handclasp 2. I have reviewed the Order of the Arrow Handbook. I have thought deeply about what the Ordeal and ceremonies mean to me. 3. I am actively registered in Scouting in/as (Give unit number or registered position) 4. I have participated in camping trips with my troop, patrol or team since my Ordeal. (Scouts and Scouters may include any Scouting related camping that is not an OA activity ) 5. In the space below, do the following: 1) explain what you think the Obligation means; 2) describe how you have fulfilled this Obligation in your unit, in your daily life, and how you have used your understanding of the Ordeal to aid in this service; 3) describe your specific plans for giving service in the lodge program. (Attach extra sheets as necessary) I certify that I have met all these requirements for Brotherhood membership and I am ready to seal my membership in the Lodge in the Brotherhood ceremony. 8 (printed on the membership card). Also memorize the Song, the Admonition, the sign of Ordeal membership, and the Arrow handclasp. 2. Advance in your understanding of the Ordeal. Gain a thorough understanding of the Ordeal through which you have passed. 3. Serve your unit. Retain your registration in Scouting. During a period of at least 10 months, strive to fulfill your Obligation by continuing and expanding your service to your own troop. 4. Plan for service in your lodge. Retain your registration in your lodge and keep your dues paid. Be aware that acceptance of Brotherhood membership involves a pledge of service to the lodge. Develop a concrete idea of how you plan to fulfill this pledge. 5. Review your progress. When you earnestly feel that you have met the four challenges above, write a letter to your lodge secretary. In this letter: I, explain what you think the Obligation means; ii, Describe how you have been fulfilling this Obligation in your troop and in your daily life, and how you have used your understanding of the Ordeal to aid in this service; and iii, Describe your specific plans for giving service in the lodge program. *From the ORDER OF THE ARROW HANDBOOK, 1992 Ed.
