1 Barony of Arn Hold Volume 33 Issue 5 May 2015 On This Date in History On May 1, 1328 the kingdoms of England and Scotland signed the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton, ending the First War of Scottish Independence. The terms of the treaty stated that, in exchange for 100,000 sterling, the English crown would recognize the following terms: 1) Scotland was a fully independent kingdom, 2) Robert the Bruce and his heirs and successors were its rightful rulers, and 3) The border between England and Scotland would be that recognized under the reign of Alexander III before the wars began. The First War of Scottish Independence arose out of the uncertainty following the death of Scottish King Alexander III in England s Edward I Longshanks supported John Balliol, who recognized Edward as his feudal lord. Scotland s aristocracy disliked this arrangement, and attempted to seize control of the country, forming an alliance with France instead, The Auld Alliance. Longshanks invaded Scotland in 1296 to retaliate, sparking a war that would rage on and off for decades, featuring Balliol s abdication, William Wallace s attempted rebellions against Longshanks, and Robert the Bruce s murder of his cousin and fellow claimant to the throne of Scotland, John Comyn, in the chapel of Greyfriars Monastery. Bruce was excommunicated for this murder, and never fulfilled the crusade to the Holy Land he promised to undertake out of repentance. Though the Battle of Bannockburn marked the defeat of the English in 1314, peace negotiations and skirmishes did not cease until King Robert was an old sick man by this time, suffering from what many believe to be leprosy. The weak King Edward II, busy with a rebellion by his wife and her lover, finally agreed to give up his claim to the overlordship of Scotland under threat of renewed battle. Edward s daughter went on to marry Robert s son, ushering in a mere five years of peace before war broke out again. 2 Random Carp That I Have Learned A look at modern practices and their medieval sources by K. Braden von Sobernheim People love their horror movies. In so many of them you have protagonists haunted by some spooky thing, and they find out that their house is on top of some burial ground (re: Poltergeist, Amityville, The Shining, &c.). With all of the replication of a similar theme, it had to start somewhere, right? Pliny the Younger (61-c. 112) a magistrate of Ancient Rome wrote a story about a philosopher who moves to Rome and buys a cheap house; cheap because it s haunted. Well, the philosopher doesn t believe it and sends his servants (re: slaves) away and stays up all night writing until the ghost of an old man in chains shows up and beckons him out to a spot in the yard where it stopped. The next morning the philosopher had his servants dig up the spot, where they found a body in chains. They gave it a proper burial and no more was heard of the ghost in chains. So, when the next rash of slash films comes out with yet another ghost from a body buried under the house, you know how long THAT plot twist has been around And now you know more random carp. 4 Baronial Bid Don Gomez de Santander and Lady Merin du Bourbon If it pleases their gracious Majesties of Artemisia, their noble Highnesses of Artemisia, their honorable Excellencies of Arn Hold, and the joyous Populace of Arn Hold, your humble subjects Gomez de Santander and Merin du Bourbon send our devotion and admiration. We hope to find all in great health and spirit while we respectfully request attention to the matter at hand. These words serve as notice of our intent to run for the position of Baron and Baroness of the Territorial Barony of Arn Hold. We are eligible, by the laws and customs of the Kingdom of Artemisia and the Territorial Barony of Arn Hold, to fulfill the roles of this office. We are both active within the kingdom, have held offices within the Barony, and are familiar with the Laws and Customs of the Society, of the Kingdom, as well as those listed in Corpora. We feel our unusual circumstance of including two households support in the positions of Baron and Baroness will ease the temporal, communicative, and financial burdens and responsibilities of this office, should you choose us to undertake this duty. Gomez de Santander has been an active member of Arn Hold for over a decade, having served in a variety of areas and positions. He has been on retinue and twice served as Rapier Champion. He has served as the Chirurgeon for a number of years. He has been a Deputy Seneschal and Drop-Dead Deputy; from those positions he has performed the office as Acting Seneschal on two occasions when a bridge was needed between officers. He also currently heads the Scribes Guild. He has been recognized by the Barony for his service with a Ygdrassil, a Moose Combatant, a Windmuhlen Keeper (twice), a Trypsichores Mouffle, a SPUD (three times), a Cirque d Honeur, and the Amethyst Chalice. He has been recognized by the Kingdom with an Award of Arms and a Gryphon s Heart (three times), and he is a member of the orders of the Golden Pillar, the Golden Maple Leaf, the Gold Scarf, the White Scarf, and the Golden Sun in Splendour. Though Merin du Bourbon has been a member of the populace of Arn hold for a relatively short time, she has been a member of retinue or a baronial champion since her first event and has served behind the thrones with joy at every event she has had the opportunity to do so for the last three years. Merin has also taken the Baronial Office of Knight Marshal, and has been focusing her efforts on recruitment and retention of new fighters into the Barony. She has been recognized by the Barony for her service with a Ygdrassil, a Gaurdian of Sincerity and Honor, a Moose Combatant, and the Cirque d Honeur. She has also been recognized by the Kingdom with an Award of Arms.

5 Baronial Bid Don Gomez de Santander and Lady Merin du Bourbon Continued If chosen, we would continue to work towards recruitment into our Barony, as our predecessors have already worked so successfully towards, as well as furthering those outlying communities who look to our Barony for advice and support as they start down their own paths in the SCA. We would promote the furthering of Youth Activities, and hope to include a focus on youth development in our recruitment activities. We would focus on the further development of a strong Officer Corps which evenly distributes the duties of the Barony and avoids over-burdening any one individual. We would strive to advance a more informative method for recruiting event autocrats, while creating a support base with a list of possible venues, ready group of volunteers, and other information to help new and returning autocrats when needed. We believe that, as Baron and Baroness, it is our duty to provide a fun, educational, and safe venue for the entire populace to enjoy and grow within. If these letters find favor with Your Majesties, Highnesses, Excellencies, and the Populace, we look forward to our further discussions, where we can answer any questions you may have on how we plan to further serve and endeavor towards the continued prosperity of the Barony of Arn Hold. By our hands so written, and sealed on the eighteenth day of February within your Barony of Arn Hold, Gomez de Santander Merin du Bourbon

Thoughts from Douglas, the seneschal, as relayed by HE Balenor. The kingdom is losing about $5000 per year. This isn t sustainable. Please consider: how is Arn Hold able to help resolve this issue? Please contact the Kingdom Financial Committee of your thoughts to help. Proposed ideas include: 10% of profits from events profiting over $100 would go to kingdom, or an additional $2 gate fee to go to Kingdom. Estrella previously brought a lot of money to the kingdom, but the kingdom pulled out, which was a large loss of revenue. Populace is also welcome to donate to the kingdom directly. Please give your feedback on the kingdom calendar changes. The B&B will work to plug the baronial events into the three proposed calendars for the kingdom to see what the impact would be. 11 Barmaids Thrown Weapons Events Weapons are sure to be flying at the Cloak and Dagger Tavern, as its r egular s ar e not known for their refined manners!!! All throw weapons rogues (10 years old or older) are invited to the Cloak and Dagger Tavern for general thrown weapons skullduggery. You can rescue the tavern wench with a well-placed axe throw and then see if you can beat a fellow rogue in a thrown knife duel!!! A class - Introduction to Thrown Weapons - will be offered before the event if you have not thrown before or want a refresher course. Loaner weapons will be available if you left your axe and knife in your other tunic. The types of thrown weapons used in the SCA will be discussed and displayed. Basic range safety and throwing techniques will be presented and the students will be given personal training in how to throw. Class is open to all skill levels of throwers. As per kingdom regulations, youth must be at least 10 years old and have a parent or guardian present on the range in order to throw; youth years old must have a parent or guardian on-site, but they do not have to be present on the range. All youth must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian prior to participation. Waiver forms will be provided. Competition: TAVERN BRAWL. The competition will consist of two segments: (1) Rescue the Tavern Wench; and (2) Thrown Knife Duel. Rescue the Tavern Wench Two axe throws at a crazy rogue (a paper target showing a head and upper torso) who was jilted by a tavern wench and is trying to kidnap her (a balloon on one side of the paper target). Five points for a kill, 3 points for a wound and minus 1 point if you break the balloon (Dolt! - you just wounded the tavern wench instead of subduing her captor!!). Thrown Knife Duel Two throwers are sitting in the tavern. They trade insults, but before the argument can escalate into a brawl, the thrown weapons marshal shouts take it outside. As both throwers turn around to face the target (a paper target showing a head and upper torso of a rogue), the marshal shouts coward!! and each thrower realizes that the other thrower is not going to fight fair, but is going to try to kill them first with a thrown knife. Up to three knives may be thrown (if you can carry them safely). If neither thrower scores with the first throw (5 points for a kill, 3 points for a wound ), the marshal will shout draw! and a second (or third) knife may be thrown. First wound or kill strike wins 2 bonus points. If both throwers score wounds during a throwing segment, the marshal will shout draw and the contestants can choose to either try for a killing throw or accept their wound throw. An additional thrown knife MIGHT dislodge the scoring knife, and then the contestant would have no score at all! If a killing throw is made, the initial wounding throw will not count.
