1 Dear Parents, Once again we have had a very busy week and, as reported in last week s letter, have had the Wishford Team in school for a whole day watching lessons, talking to staff and children and generally getting involved! The first paintbrush has been lifted this week and, if you come to see me in future, you will find that the reception room to the right of the front door has been given a bit of a facelift and will shortly become my new office. My current office will then have a makeover to become the new school office where Penny and Jacky will be able to welcome you properly into the school. We hope to have all this work completed, along with a new medical room attached to the office, by the end of half term. Over the course of the next few months we will be making improvements to those areas of the school which require work as a priority. We are also planning a range of physical improvements in the fabric of the school and, when the Reception children return to school after half term they will find that their classroom will have been completely redecorated. We are very excited about the next few years and hope that you are too. We have our termly open morning next Friday and if you have any friends, neighbours or colleagues who you think might be interested in coming to see us, please do encourage them to come along. They can contact Penny in the office or just turn up on the day between 9.30 and Finally, you may have noticed in the school calendar on the website that there was due to be a Parent s Evening for children in Year 3 and 4 on Thursday 12th October. This has been postponed to Wednesday 18th October and will combine with the Reception, Year 1 and 2 Parents Evening all of which will take place in the school hall. Details for booking your time slot were sent out during the week. 3 STEM Leaders Award Pupils have entered the Stem Leaders Award for a number of years at Prior Park Prep and we are delighted to receive recognitions from the Stem Ambassadors organisation for our commitment. Participation in the award is a wonderful opportunity to broaden pupils' horizons. They have opportunities to take part in trips to interesting places such as a Wind Farm, INTEL and have visits from professionals such as researchers into DNA from Oxford University and designers from Dyson. We are looking forward to lots more Stem experiences this year. Is paper strong enough to build with? Marcus Simmonds, educational outreach officer with West Hill Wind Solar Farm amazed year 3 and 4 with some amazing folds today in a STEM workshop. The children were surprised to see how strong folded paper could be when they tried resting weights on it. Mr Simmonds showed the children how wonderful shaped and structures could be achieved with simple folds. All Year 5 pupils - ART OLD CROCKS! Please can all Year 5 pupils bring into school an old ceramic or plastic cereal size bowl on Monday 9th October for their art lessons. Each pupil will require a bowl to use as a mould during forthcoming Art lessons when using clay over the next 5 weeks or so. These will be returned afterwards, however, an old bowl would be ideal in case of any breakages! It s all about Teamwork or is it? Years 6, 7 and 8 are starting to paint their imaginative giant scale jungle canvas paintings! It's all about teamwork, imagination and brushwork skills! They are having a lot of fun whilst learning about artists such as Henri Rousseau and Millie Marotta.

4 Nursery This week we transformed the role play area into a doctor s surgery. We have had fun dressing up as a doctor and enjoyed the responsibility of treating a patient. The children especially like using the bandages and plasters to make their patients feel better. For our maths work this week, we have continued with the theme of sorting and the children have experienced sorting buttons into their different shapes. We are also beginning to use our fingers to represent numbers. At Forest School, we talked about autumn after listening to a story. Then we went on a walk to see if we could spot some signs of autumn in our local environment. The children spotted blackberries growing on the bushes noticed some leaves had changed colour on the trees. Reception This week in Reception we have had a fun and busy week and all of the children are showing super listening skills when following instructions. We have enjoyed learning using our sense of sight at Forest School to find woodland animals that were hiding in the woods. In Literacy, as well as phonics and reading, we are focusing on The Three Little Pigs and thinking about their different houses. We have then written labels, captions and sentences about our own houses. We discovered that some of us live in a house and some of us live in the deep, dark forest bringing one child s imagination to life! In Mathematics, we have been learning all about adding one more using our colourful classroom resources to make adding fun. We have also enjoyed PE with Miss Bird, French with Madame Crawford, Harvest singing practice and have been exploring the Early Years curriculum using our wonderful garden area. Nursery WOW Moments Alice invited Eliska to play with her at the sand tray. Darcy completed a 24 piece puzzle independently. Well done! Elliot wrote the first letter in his name using his finger in the sand tray. Well Done! Emma started to talk about some letter sounds in her name at snack time. Eliska completed a 12 piece puzzle independently. Well done! Polly sorted the buttons into their different colours. Shushub brushed his teeth and dressed himself ready for school. Skylah remembered to say please and thankyou at snack time. Stars of the Week Reception: Isabella for fabulous writing using finger spaces and full stops Year 1 : Amelie for fantastic hard work, following instructions and great listening Year 2: Lily for excellent writing and enthusiasm in all work

5 Year 1 In Year 1 we have been learning about the senses of hearing and sight. We listened carefully to sounds we could hear outside and played some listening games. Then we had to put the blindfolds on and try to write our names and draw pictures - some of us were very good at this. In Maths we have been learning how to sort objects using a Venn diagram. We sorted shapes, food and monsters! Year 2 The Year 2 children have loved making and playing maths games this week. At the start of the week the children enjoyed a lively game of snakes and ladders on the Interactive whiteboard. They were reminded about games of chance and how a team plays and supports one another. Children then focused in their maths lesson on writing and sequencing numbers correctly and devising the best way to make the game board flow. Year 2 s next challenge was to place some of the instructions on their game boards. They had to employ some strategic thinking for this. Could they put Go back 4 spaces on number 3? Would it be wise to have Go to the Finish at the beginning of the game? Pupils then had time to decorate their game boards to make them look fun. Dinosaurs and smiley faces were very popular choices. The best part of this whole exercise was actually playing games with their friends. These are a resource the children have made themselves which they will continue to use and enjoy throughout the year. Well done Year 2 for creating some innovative and fun games. In Assembly, Oliver told us all about his investiture into the Beavers. We were all very proud of him and enjoyed hearing about the event and about his badges.

6 SPORTS U8 and U9 Hockey v Hatherop The mixed U8/U9 girls had a new challenge of playing on an unfamiliar grass terrain on Monday! The girls were not afraid to use new skills and quickly realised how to make an impact and score some excellent goals. Strong attacking team work was demonstrated throughout by Tegan M, Evie M, Lily G, Madeleine H and Roxy P-S. These girls were closely supported a strong defence who prevented many goals, including Georgia F, Bella S and Emily G. A great team effort and valuable experience for all of the girls, well done! U10 Hockey v Hatherop The U10 team played hard from start to finish but didn't quite manage to score the all-important goals this week. Freya P played a great game in defence, stopping many of Hatherop's attempts at goal and was voted player of the team by the opposition. Olivia W, Simi B and Amy-Jane G all persevered to try and score but unfortunately the Hatherop defence were also quite strong. The teams were fairly evenly matched but Hatherop had a couple of breaks in the first half which they utilised well. The girls should be pleased with their determination this week against tough opposition. U11 Hockey v Hatherop What an exciting match this was, with both teams carrying the ball end to end. Very close and a final result of 5-4 to Prior. Everyone dug deep and it was lovely to see both teams determined to win! Some excellent play from Faith I and Alana C who were passing well and running round the defenders effectively. Bethan D pulled off some impressive saves in goal, so it was a super team effort. Well done to all. U13 Hockey v Hatherop On Wednesday, the U13 girls face Hatherop in the first of their matches against them this term. At the first whistle, the team were met by a determined and strong Hatherop side, who kept the Prior Park Prep attack at bay. Laila H and Georgia I worked hard to break through the Hatherop defence and Zoe G worked tirelessly to get the ball to our attacking end enabling some excellent goals in the second half. Mackenzie J was outstanding in defence, working hard to clear the ball and finding space well throughout. Niamh P saved a number of good goals and should be commended for her constant determination even when the ball doesn t come her way. We look forward to playing Hatherop again next week as we are sure that they will come back fighting. Well done, girls. U13 A Rugby v Hatherop The U13 team hosted Hatherop on Wednesday however, the boys had a point to prove after a difficult start to the season at Beaudesert. During training over the past couple of weeks, we have been working hard to develop our ball handling skills. From the off it was clear that Prior had started to link as a team and demonstrate the ability to pass the ball through the back line at speed. Special mentions must go to Ben M, Nicholas V, Ethan T and Finn R who were outstanding with the ball in hand. It was also great to see the boys working hard in defence, with David T stealing the ball at the breakdown and Charlie R, Oliver G and Jack C all putting their bodies on the line when tackling. It was a great team performance and one that the boys should take great positivity from. Under 11 v Hatherop The boys started their match in a strong position, running great lines, rucking the ball well and tackling hard. They really were on top in every area, causing Hatherop a lot of problems. However, the boys learned a valuable lesson as they thought that they had done enough at half time and allowed Hatherop back in the game. Tackles were missed and when we were in possession there were a number of dropped passes. Hatherop were playing with good aggression and had scored 6 tries in the second half to our 1. Hopefully, by losing this game, our boys can learn that they need to play hard for the whole game to make sure they win. U10A v Hatherop The year 5 boys performed well as a team in their match against Hatherop and were commended on their sporting approach to the game by our opponents. Once again Jack C was outstanding in defence, making some outstanding tackles. His determined defence was complimented by the efforts of Oliver C who worked tirelessly in defence and attack. George C was creative in attack and demonstrated good spatial awareness, whist Jacob D demonstrated his strong direct running with a number of good individual tries. Well played to the whole team! U9A v Hatherop The U9's travelled to Hatherop for their opening game of the season and were slow to get started in a short game. The team played some good rugby at times and completed some good passing moves. Individuals performed well with the ball in hand, with Jordan I and Alexander H demonstrating some excellent evasive skills and scored a number of tries. Well done, boys. U9B v Hatherop The U9B boys also travelled to Hatherop. There was some excellent running the ball in hand and some good evasive footwork shown at times. However, it was the lack of tackling that cost them a victory but there was some excellent defensive skill shown by Almo P and William N. The boys need to work a little more as a team in order to reach their full potential by the end of term. U8 Rugby v Hatherop The U8 s travelled to Hatherop for their first Monday fixture of the season. The boys demonstrated some excellent evasive running and superb link play with supporting runners. Special mentions must go to Joel B, Jamie C, Alex C and Etienne M who all scored a number of tries. However, Nathan H s work rate was absolutely phenomenal, making tags at all points of the pitch and looking to drive the team forwards with the ball in hand. Another great performance, well done, boys. Other Sporting Greats Hannah was the overall winner, in her age group, of the Cirencester Biathlon at the weekend. She also picked up medals for being both the Fastest Swimmer and Fastest Runner in her age group too. Myles went through a series of qualifying rounds for the British Riding Clubs Junior Dressage to Music. The final was on Sunday at Bury Farm in Lincolnshire where he won the competition and in now British Riding Clubs Junior Champion for 2017.
