Keep up the good work Jimmy Not a very rewarding return following our trip to Casey Fields for the opening round of the season. 3 Losses is not the return the doves a quite familiar with but from where we have been in the past twelve months i am sure all coaches would be satisfied with the efforts from all 3 sides. The 18s were very competitive throughout the game and were in front at ½ time but could not keep the pressure up and went down by 4 goals, The reserves were in the game all day and went down by a couple of goals and with a lot of new players in the side, they will only improve each week. The Seniors played a very talented and classy outfit who already had a hit out last week to get rid of the cobwebs and boy did they show it, i have no doubt this Cranbourne unit will take plenty of scalps this season and will be the side to beat in Our boys played some really good footy as well and not for poor second quarter things could of been a bit closer. We look forward to the improvement in all three sides over the coming weeks SCORES SNRS RES U18 s 26 MPNFL Since 1908 Socially, tonight after the game (SUMO NIGHT) see Melinda and Kelly for all the details.

The Senior game began with ROC taking it right up to the Lions and only after some strong urging by Coach Holland to go long and direct the boys lifted and the Lions ran over a gallant ROC to win by 55 points. The Lions also introduced Jason Fisher, Sean Bell, and Nathan Fry to Senior football and all showed they will be good players in the years to come. The Reserves had a very comfortable win and dominated the game from the first bounce. Coach Shooter would have been pleased with his team in his first day in charge. In the Under 18s things looked bleak after a very ordinary first quarter when ROC led 39 points to nothing. TO the young Lions credit they din t drop their heads and battled hard over the next three quarters to eventually lose by the quarter time margin. 8 South East Juniors South East Umpires AFL Expirence South East Juniors continues to provide a great introduction, learning and development pathway as well as a welcoming environment for people who enjoy being involved in junior sport. During the AFL NAB Finals Series a small group of South East Juniors young umpires were invited to come out to Etihad Stadium and share in the pre match routines of the AFL umpires. Ryan Barnes, Max Dicker, Mitch Simpson and Brett Hamilton where excited to experience the electricity of an AFL pre-game build up. The boys meet the match umpires and had the opportunity to ask them questions about being an AFL Umpire. They were privy to the AFL umpires pre match talk and were inspired by the Umpires dedication and team work. To end the night the boys walked out onto Etihad with the umpires and completed the pre match warm up alongside the AFL Umpires. Amazed by the crowd and the atmosphere Ryan, Max, Mitch and Brett finally settled down to enjoy the match. It was terrific to see the enthusiasm and professionalism that our umpires showed on the night. This is one of many opportunities that South East Juniors provide for their Umpiring Group. The League has conducted a pre-season training program for 30 of their 2 umpire group and sent umpires to attend the Eastern Umpire Academy and Girls Umpire Academy run by AFL Vic. If you are interested in Umpiring want to keep fit and earn extra money please contact us by sending an e- mail to umpiring@southeastjuniors.com.au or calling the South East Juniors on South East Juniors pay umpires the full fee charged to clubs and does not have a compulsory membership. 30 MPNFL Since 1908

10 Scorpions - Feel the Sting! CASEY: Keep up to date with everything that is happening at the Casey Scorpions by visiting out website. STRIKING GOLD by Ice Station The long trip down the Western Highway was made worthwhile on Saturday for Casey Scorpions coach Brad Gotch, his assistants, the hardy supporters following the team and, of course, the players who made the long trip to Victoria s gold mining region when the visitors scored a handy win over reigning VFL premiers North Ballarat. It would be fair to say that the Roosters, at the moment at least, are not the team that won the last three premiership flags. Retirements, AFL recruiters and injuries have seen to that. However, it is never easy for visiting clubs to win in the hostile playing environment of Eureka Stadium so the Casey Scorpions will be happy to come away from that venue for the second year in a row with a win. Casey s team had a strong Ballarat flavour when it stepped out onto the field on an overcast day influenced by swirling winds that alternated between icy under the cloud cover to mild when the sun came out. Young Melbourne talls Lucas Cook and Tom McDonald were recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels in last year s national draft while rookie Daniel Nicholson who spent the previous two seasons with University Blues originally came from St Patrick s College, Ballarat and played with East Point in the local Ballarat competition. All did themselves and their team proud with sound performances and Nicholson, playing a midfield role and running with 2009 J.J. Liston Trophy Winner Myles Sewell, was best on the ground. After a couple of slow starts in the early rounds, the Scorpions were on their game from the very beginning against an inexperienced North Ballarat line up, playing hard at the ball and causing numerous turnovers with a strong confident display. It was local boy Nicholson who got the team going with the first goal of the day and Ricky Petterd was also causing havoc up forward in the early going. The Roosters were held goalless in the first quarter and, trailing by 25 points, were already in trouble at the first break. North Ballarat had only a handful of North Melbournealigned players and they wilted under the class of the Scorpions in the second quarter after an initial burst of two unanswered goals by North Ballarat. With experienced campaigners in Matthew Warnock dominating in defence and Joel Macdonald in control around the ground, the blowtorch was applied and Casey dominated proceedings with players who were too skilful and too quick by hand and foot. James Strauss and Sam Blease were in particularly good form and the lead at the half had opened up to 51 points. After the break, the visitors remained in control but North Ballarat rallied and put in a far more competitive performance. Lucas Cook was very productive up forward and Jake Spencer and Max Gawn continued to win in the ruck against VFL representative ruckman Orren Stephenson but their teammates reverted to some sloppy play for a brief period that let the Roosters in for a few goals. Casey soon steadied however, as one would expect from a team brimming with talent and 15 AFL listed players but the game was losing its momentum. As the cross breeze stiffened, the teams struggled to score goals and the last quarter became a dour affair with the home side kicking the only goal for the term against seven behinds. By the final siren, the Casey Scorpions had made it two out of three for the season, doubling North Ballarat s score with an emphatic 56-point victory. Matt Fieldsend and Tim Mohr were the best of the Casey listed players in a strong team effort and with more players becoming available, the team should be at full strength in a fortnight s time when it returns from the bye to play a televised fixture against local rival Frankston at Casey Fields in an ABC televised match. 12 Demon Talk Hi Guys, THIS week, the magazines, ipods and portable DVD players were out in force on the plane, as the boys made the trip across the Nullarbor to Perth. It s come on the back of a week off, and I was lucky enough to relax and enjoy a week off. At the time of writing this, we are in Perth. On Wednesday, I went for a walk, had a stretch and a quick kick of the footy. But make no mistake, we are raring to go for the big game against the Eagles and looking forward to hopefully coming away with the four points. Around the club there is plenty happening on the Community front and in particular the City of Casey. This year the club is kicking off a brand new partnership with NAB AFL Auskick centers in the City of Casey. NAB AFL Auskick is such an important stage in the development of a young footballer. It is often where kids get their first taste of footy, as they begin the process to hopefully one day becoming an AFL Footballer. The Melbourne Football Club is taking the opportunity to promote and grow the game through a range of initiatives aimed at increasing participation and assisting the hard-working and dedicated centre coordinators, parents, and most of all the participants, some of which include; Teammates Jack Grimes and Liam Jurrah, who are ambassadors of the partnership and Auskick participants will have the opportunity to take part in clinics run by Jack and Liam Centers will be provided with equipment packs to help them run weekly sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to win a weekly Demons award based on three values (United, Enjoyable, and Proud). Opportunity for participants and coordinators to take part in an inner sanctum experience at a Melbourne FC home game. When I was a young kid playing football, I still remember the thrill of meeting AFL players and having the chance to watch AFL Football at the MCG. To be in a position to provide that same experience for young kids playing the game is fantastic. If you have a child or know someone who is interested in participating in Auskick, or you are interested in being a volunteer at Auskick level, visit com.au to find out the details of your nearest Auskick centre. Good luck to your team this week. GO DEES! Nathan Jones #2 MPNFL Ambassador Keep up to date with whats going at the Melbourne Football Club by on Twitter. Nathan Jones 34 MPNFL Since 1908

14 Netball Preview New look Lions upset ROCers Well the start of the 2011 season kicked off in gorgeous autumn weather. Although most of the results were pretty much one sided affairs, the match of the round would have to be the Pakenham v ROC game. The traditional Highway Rivalry between last year s runners-up in Pakenham versus ROC who finished 5th is always going to be a tough contest and this match did not disappoint. What was interesting about this match was that Pakenham have a virtually new line-up from last year. The Lions have recruited a quality goaler from a VNL club who is sharing the ring with Toni Dart, who as expected, has been promoted back into the A grade line-up from last year playing in B grade. But the big surprise is tough defender, Kasey Holland, is also playing in the goal ring and seems to be more than capable of holding her own in there. Only Lauren Cherry remains from last year s mid-court line-up now working with Dani Williams, Laura Christie and Emily Hunt. One could assume that the team would be robbing Peter to pay Paul by moving Holland out of defence, but young gun Olivia Hunt in her first season of seniors really stepped up in this match combining well with Aleisha Taura. Although the score-line suggested a tightly contested 6 goal win to Pakenham this didn t truly reflect the tempo of the match. The Lions were in control from the outset, combining well all over the court despite this game being the first time they had all played together. Holland moves and positions well within the goal ring, using her defensive knowledge to her advantage as she knows what the ROC defenders were trying prevent her from doing. Although her accuracy can be improved, and it will the more she plays there, her positioning for rebounds is second to none, allowing further opportunities under goal for her team. The Pakenham mid-court defended soundly creating further turn-overs for their goalers. The stand-out for the match was Olivia Hunt, just up from 17&under playing in defence. Hunt really stepped up to the challenge of A grade with some tight marking defence and working well from the outset with Taura. This is where ROC really missed Nic Robbins who provides a much needed target in the goal-ring. Although Sarah Smith and Courtney Linhart were reasonably accurate throughout the match, the ball was just not getting to them often enough. Pakenham had a sound lead going into the final term but allowed ROC to sneak back into the match. At the final whistle however the Lions had done enough to hang onto the four points. Narre Warren gave Berwick a bit of a fright managing to stay goal-for-goal with them in the first term. Terri-Lee Brettoner really stood up for the young Magpies with strong leads and accurate passing. Simone Osbourne was also a standout through the mid-court managing to feed to the goalers well. Alice Gough made a strong come back in defence after having a season off with a dislocated hip. Unfortunately, that was where Narre s good fortune ended with the second and subsequent terms being all about Berwick. Lynne Moyes creativity in the goal ring could not be matched for the full four quarters nor could the height of Tayla Shannon be nullified by the Narre Warren defence. Berwick ran out winners by 20 goals but Narre should be pleased with this result considering same time last year Berwick whipped them by nearly 40 goals. Premiership contenders, Keysborough, had a decent hit-out with Tooradin during the first round. Although without goaling gun, Joanne Amott, Elise Boyd more than adequately stepped into fill the GA position. Likewise, Penny Byers made a comfortable transition from B grade into the A grade GS position. These two goalers really use their body and positioning well in the ring which made it tough going for the Tooradin defenders. Mel Mantel has definitely learnt a lot from her first season in seniors last year and had a best-on-court performance for showing so much resilience to the Keysie attacking onslaught. Tooradin managed to have a lot Plan ahead, on and off the field If you re going to have a few drinks, plan ahead and arrange a ride with a designated driver someone who s not drinking or who s responsibly sticking to light. 15 Netball Preview of the ball and seemed unbothered by the Keysborough defensive zone which was played throughout all three senior grades on the day. Tarryn Munro in WD was impressive for Keysborough by creating a lot of turn-overs through the mid-court and constant pressure around the Tooradin goal ring. Munro is definitely a player to keep an eye on over the course of the season and will be a headache for any mid-courter in the competition. Likewise, Samantha Downie is a big improver from last season, despite her lack of height, is troublesome in the defensive goal ring. As expected Tooradin s goal-ring would again be lacking this season but to their credit the three goalers managed well under some tough scrutiny from the Keysie defenders. Coming up from B grade last season, Dayle Willis took on the goaling responsibilities well and was aptly supported from Shona Wells feeding her brilliantly in her first game back after a season off. The difference between these two sides on the day was Keysborough s tenacity to the ball. Every pass Tooradin made was contested so if it wasn t taken cleanly Keysborough was first on hand to chase up the loose ball. This is why Keysborough are often viewed as one of the more physical sides in the competition and from what we have seen in only one match this strategy seems to work. So, moving onto this week s games, for sure the match of the round will be between Keysborough and ROC. Keysborough will be full of confidence after their win over Tooradin but ROC I m sure will have time to lick their wounds over Easter and come back more determined than ever to get some points on the board. I think this match will be decided by the Keysborough goalers or conversely the ROC defenders. Even without Amott, Keysborough are strong in the goal ring which I think will trouble ROC. If ROC can stem the flow of the ball through the mid-court to the Keysie goalers they may be able to match them, but I m still going to tip Keysborough to take away the four points. Another interesting match will be the Tooradin v Devon Meadows clash. These two teams have had surprisingly tough encounters in the past and this match will be no different. Both of these clubs would like to think they can slot into the finals this season and taking away the points in this early round would be a huge advantage. If Tooradin s goalers hold up as well against Devon Meadows defenders as they did against Keysborough s last round then they will win the match. Finally, the Cranbourne v Berwick game could be closer than some expect. The advantage for Berwick is that this is a home game, or more importantly, not played at Casey Fields. The match-up of Tara Cecil against Tayla Shannon should be a ripper and worth the outing just to see these two young guns slug it out. I think Cranbourne still has a fair amount of work ahead of them to gel well as a side for the full four quarters so my money is on Berwick to take this one out. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Club A B C Total Beaconsfield Berwick ROC Cranbourne Tooradin D Meadows Hampton Park Keysborough Doveton Pakenham Narre Warren So, here are all of my predictions for this week s round; Keysborough v ROC Pakenham v Doveton Tooradin v Devon Meadows Berwick v Cranbourne Beaconsfield v Hampton Park Narre Warren BYE Until next week, enjoy your netball! TOORADIN Firstly, a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to club stalwart, Shona Wells, who plays her 200th Senior game today, for the TDNC!!!! Shona started playing at the club in 1990, playing in the 13 & unders. She started playing senior netball in 1998 and apart from having last season off to have a baby, has played every season since. Shona has returned to the court this year and has been announced the A grade captain once again, which marks her 6th year of being the leader of A grade. Shona has not only just played netball at the club, she has also coached the 13 s through to C grade and has been premiership coach on several occasions. She has been an active committee member since 2005 and has taken on the role of club treasurer for the past few years. On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to wish Shona all the best for her 200th game and hopefully the girls can get a win on the board for her. Secondly, I would like to thank the players, committee & parents who helped out at the Tooradin Market last Sunday. It was a huge success and our egg/bacon sandwiches and sausages in bread helped to raise about $800 profit for the netball club. Players who did not assist with the market, will be expected to help at the Cranbourne Bunnings sausage sizzle on Sunday 5th June. All money raised is going towards our court resurfacing & lights so please get behind our fundraising events. Since 1908 MPNFL 37

Good Luck to our footy & netball teams today against Devon Meadows. GO SEAGULL S!!! DEVON MEADOWS This week we played Hampton Park at home, hoping for some good results for the first round of the season. All under 13girls played well together, with some great passages of play. Alison Ribalix receiving the appreciation award. The under 15s appreciation award went to Shenae Maroney. All girls played well and everyone is to remember that you are all important members of the team. The girls C grade played very well this week. They moved the ball well from the defence end to the attacking end backing each other all the way and giving many options up the court. I was very pleased with the way the girls played but unfortunately we couldn t come away with a win. BOC: Susie Hannema Great win by the B grade girls!! Everyone played well and worked together as a team to get the ball into the ring. There was some great rebounding from the shooters when they missed. The defenders worked well to put pressure on the Hampton Park shooters. All in all a strong team effort by everyone. BOC: Amy DeHey A Grade has been working hard at training on our court play and it s starting to pay off. We are starting goal from some of our turnovers and our defenders are magnificent. They are giving us double the goaling opportunities of the opposite team. Once we are able to score off these turnovers we ll be unstoppable. Great work on the weekend girls. Let s keep it up. BOC: Bobby Hannema. 38 MPNFL Since 1908 KEYSBOROUGH The 17s kicked things off early with a gutsy performance but unfortunately went down. The third term was a stand out, only loosing the quarter by 2. Good to see lots of the senior girls there to support our new team. Keep the encouragement up ladies, Liz it would be better if they could hear you cheer. Highlight of the day would have to be the performance by C Grade!! With 4 new faces and no bench, the girls were unstoppable winning by 30 goals! Leroy and Sarah Vella DOMINATED in defence, getting their hands on everything. Opposition shooters have a lot to worry about this season. Ange, Rachael and Millsy smashed it in the mid-court! You d think they d been playing together for years. Their passes into the goalers were bang on, making life easier for Trista and Jarrard. The shooters accuracy was superb, Trista bombing them in from down town and Jarrard in career best form. It s an exciting time for C Grade who will only get better after more games together. Look out September! It s always a tough tussle with Tooradin for the B Grade girls and today proved no different. Close right up until the last quarter, we unfortunately let it get away, going down by 5. A changed line up and the loss of Cannons will take time to adjust to, but we ll get there. Our mid court were awesome. Megs ran her guts out and came up on top, Jules did what she liked and Breaza relished her chance at C. Welcome to Lovey who starred with the super fit Kristie down back. We ll get them next time girls! A Grade have big expectations to live up to this year! Winning by 15, we ve had a few changes and are still finding our feet. The always amazing Sam Downie and Betty Evans are fitter than ever and were terrific in defence. Not feeling 100%, Darren pulled intercepts from nowhere, even earning the praise from the opposition. Fi Smith killed it as always, linking well with Burnsy and Jimmy. Penny took control of the ring and was reliable as ever, working with Boydy they were like 2 peas in a pod! We will only get better as the season rolls on! Pumped for an awesome season girls! Make sure you get down to training because we re fighting for positions this year. GO BURRA! ROC In round 1 we travelled to Pakenham ready for an exciting day of netball. The weather was beautiful, with sunscreen needing to be applied later on in the day. The weather was a sign of good things to come as ROC recorded wins in 4 out of the 6 grades. Special mention to C grade for defeating last years premiers! Our first social event of the year was held in the clubrooms later that night with a huge number of people turning up for cocktails. It was great to see a good gathering of netballers, and we hope this continues at the other social events this season!

17 Netball Preview Today we play our first home game for the season against Keysborough. The under 13 s and 15 s have no games this week, so don t eat too much Easter chocolate girls! It should be another good day of netball, especially as we see each team develop and become more used to playing together. Good luck to the four teams playing this week. Thanks goes to LRK Electrics for being a Platinum sponsor this year, and providing the award for the senior teams. Be sure to check out our new website at rocnetballclub.com.au/ GO ROC! BERWICK Last weekend was a fabulous start to the season for all of our Berwick teams. We played Narre Warren at Narre and it was a great day of netball had by all. Our U13 s put in a solid performance but unfortunately lost to a very skilled Narre Warren side. Our U15 s, U17 s and C grade sides all played very consistently and came away with great wins to kick off their season. B grade kept us on our toes with a nail biter and a draw with all players fighting it out until the dying minutes. A grade showed they mean business this season with a very strong performance against a much improved Narre Warren side, running away with a 23 goal victory. Congratulations to the following girls who received Best on Court awards: A grade:apple Essence Best on Court - Sarah McDermott B grade Best on Court: Chaille Hurst C grade: Rochet Kitchens Best on Court - Renee Gill U15 s: APT Best on Court - Emily La Roche U13 s Best on Court - Allana Hadley, Taylah Jencke & Lauren Labinski Today we take on Cranbourne on our home turf and are looking forward to making the most of our new spectator area. A big thank you to Emil, Daryl and the gang for all of your help in getting this project completed in time for the season commencement. This week we are supporting Epilepsy by wearing something purple and taking donations for this very worthy cause. A big thank you to all of our club for getting behind this great cause and supporting your club & team mates. Good luck to all of our teams today. CRANBOURNE The Cranbourne committee and players hopes everybody had a very happy and safe easter last weekend. I would like to thank the Pearcedale and Hastings netball clubs for playing against Cranbourne during pre season. All games where played in good sportsmanship and I think that the three clubs got some valuable game time. Round one was a good day for the Eagles against Doveton with four of five teams winning on the day. Congratulations must go to our 13 s and Under & 15 s and Under for two great wins against Doveton, keep up the good work. C grade was a great game to watch with the lead changing constantly. The Cranbourne girls played great as a team should with plenty of encouragement and talking to each other on the court which was great to see and hear. Doveton also played very well and kept Cranny on their toes for the whole game, right up until the final whistle with the scores being 34 all. B grade was a little disappointing, because they have been training so hard in the pre season & trying new tactics for the coming year. It was only round one and there are still 16 games to go, your patients is needed and hard work on the training courts will help you get results on the board. The same has to be said about the 17 s and Under they also were defeated by Doveton, but you still need to get to both training nights and work hard together and you will start matching it with the top sides. A grade, under our new coach Natu Faanana had a great win against the Doves, the girls from the first whistle played direct and positive netball, with strong passing from the defenders through the mid court to our gaolers, this has been missing from our A graders for a long time and I don t want to take anything away from the A grade girls from last year because they did a magnificent job in very hard times. It was great to watch the ball skills that our young girls have learnt from our experienced players during the short time they have been together. Today we play Berwick, we all know that they will be very hard to beat at their own courts. All teams from Cranbourne must have strong and positive attitudes this week so you can take it up to Berwick and get the four points. BB PAKENHAM It was great to get back into the 2011 netball season and the weather was kind. ROC, as expected were worthy adversaries winning 4 out of 6 matches. With new faces in all Pakenham teams this season coaches experimented with positions on the court to find the best combinations. A grade worked hard throughout the match and deserved their 6 goal win with Karyn Bailey being a great target in goals combining with Toni Dart. Since 1908MPNFL 39

18 Netball Preview Congratulations to Olivia Hunt stepping up to A Grade for her first senior season. B Grade was a fast paced game with all players working tirelessly in all areas of the court. Defence applied pressure all game. Midcourters created opportunism and fed the ball well to the new goaling trio for the week. The unfurling of last years C Grade Premiership Flag before their game was encouraging but new combinations and nerves played a part in the C Grade defeat not a lack of endeavour. The U/17 s being rewarded for an enthusiastic great team effort being the only other team to have a victory 33 goals to 14. The U/15 and U/13 sides have not yet shown their full potential and with hard work at training and their confidence growing it should be an exciting season. Hoping everyone hasn t over indulged in too much chocolate over the break and looking forward to a great day out at Doveton this week. Go Lions. BEACONSFIELD Welcome to Season We at Beaconsfield are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead and would like to welcome all new players, families and committee members that have joined us this year ended of a fabulous note, congratulations to all of our netball teams for their development and their successes last year. We were proudly represented by four teams on Grand Final Day. A Grade, U/17 s and U/15 s delivered premierships which was the perfect ending to very successful seasons for these teams. A Grade deserves a special mention for winning their 3rd consecutive premiership, an outstanding achievement. Our C Grade team tried their very best on the day and never gave up showing wonderful spirit and determination. These girls played with their heart and soul and I am very proud of them. Both our U/13 s and B Grade teams developed and improved throughout the season. Congratulations B Grade on making finals! Well done to all players, coaches and support staff on a great year. We have worked hard to make sure that 2011 will be an even bigger and better year for the Beaconsfield Netball Club. We have embraced the growth of our ever expanding area and as well as our 6 Saturday MPNFL teams we now have entered four junior teams into a midweek competition at Cranbourne Life Be In It Complex. Don t forget tonight s Life Member s Trivia Challenge, $10.00 entry and the best trivia competition in town with our MC Terry Lock. With the growth of our club comes the ongoing need for sponsorship, we would love the opportunity to discuss the various packages we have on offer for any potential sponsors looking to join our progressive club. Go Beacy! HAMPTON PARK Well done to all the girls on Saturday against Devon Medows 3 out of 5 wins is pretty impressive and I was very impressed. WELL DONE. A big congratulations to both the Under 13 s and the 15 s on winning your first game for the season having first year players and girls that have stepped up a grade can only make us stronger, so well done a credit to you all. Well done also to C Grade what a great way to start the season. You definitely made coaching easy on saturday. A massive thanks to Maddie for filling in,such an awesome performance for your first senior game. Let s continue to have fun and I m sure the wins will keep coming. Well done girls. B Grade has a bit of work to do but you will get there girls so keep your heads up and enjoy yourselves aswell. A grades game on Saturday started with a reality check on commitment as well as team work.we have a lot to work on over this season, to get the results we want In saying that I was not disheartened with our overall game just some things we need to work on. Don t forget tonight is the Minor Draw. See Mel or Simmo for futher details. Thanks to our major sponsors once again Hampton Park Tavern and First National and also Contours for coming on board again. 19 Feature Article Shona reaches playing milestone A name synonymous with the Tooradin-Dalmore Netball Club is Shona Wells (nee Rowan) who this weekend celebrates her 200th senior game with the club. Shona has been a Tooradin local nearly all her life and started playing at the netball club when she was only 10 years old. Too young to actually play in the 13&under team, Shona trained with the older kids for a season until she was eligible to play and has continued to represent the club ever since. In 1998 Shona started playing within the senior grades, initially in C grade then quickly promoted into B grade during the 1999 season. In 2000 Shona was awarded B grade Runner-up Best and Fairest and then was awarded Best & Fairest in By 2004 Shona had earned herself a permanent spot within the A grade team then in 2005 was bestowed the honour of being named the A grade captain along within taking out the Best & Fairest award in the same year, then in 2006 was the runner-up Best & Fairest. Shona has barely missed a game in the past 12 years until having a season off last year when her baby, Eva was born. But Shona s dedication to the club also extends to her involvement from the sidelines and behind the scenes. Representing the club on the committee for the past 8 years along with being a premiership coach for 13&under, coaching from then the 17&under premiership coach in followed by being the C grade coach for two years in As a player, Shona s commitment to the club and her team mates is second to none. She is a much understated player that has a strong work ethic and leads by example. Shona plays with an enormous amount of conviction, always striving to be her best and is amazingly consistent. According to former coach, Michelle Barnes Shona has always been the most reliable, steady, no fuss player I ve had the pleasure to coach and play with. Shona is such an unassuming and humble person that she brings this onto the court with her also. Often, opposition teams make the mistake of underestimating her talent and ability because of the way she handles herself on the court. But Shona never gets flustered nor shows her emotions displaying an unprecedented amount of maturity and level headedness every time she steps onto the court. Without question, Shona is one of the best mid-court players I ve ever seen at the club and without question she is also one of the most respected. Shona thoroughly deserves to be recognised for this amazing achievement of playing 200 games and I m proud to have been able to coach and play with her through many of these games. Shona also has an impressive finals record throughout her 200 games. She has been involved in five senior grade Grand Finals, winning three; one in each grade C, B and A grade. But for Shona, the one accolade that has eluded her in netball is to play in an A grade Premiership. When Tooradin-Dalmore took out the flag in 2006, unfortunately Shona was unable to play in the winning final as she was a bridesmaid in her best friend s wedding. Shona was captain of the team that season and had diligently led them to become premiership contenders but could not be there on the Grand Final day. This was a tough time for Shona who was in tears after winning the preliminary final when realisation had set in that she could not be there for the big game the following week. Now, after a season off, Shona returns to the court for her 200th game fitter and more impressive than ever. Her return to the court is welcomed by all her team mates and the club commends her on reaching this remarkable milestone. Since 1908 MPNFL 41
