2 The Story Behind the Cover Image Did you know that January 1st was not always the first month of the year? The original Roman calendar only had ten months which started in March. In around 450 BC Emperor Numa Pompilus added the months of January and February making January the first month of the calendar year. The new month was named January after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings and is pictured on the front cover of the Yeoman. This god is depicted as having two faces, one looking to the future and one to the past making the naming of the first month apropos as it is a doorway to the year. In 1582, Pope Gregory adjusted the Julian Calendar so most nations would begin celebrating the start of the new year on January 1, it would be know as the Gregorian Calendar which is what we use today. It is interesting to note that the English and the American colonies would continue to celebrate the new year on the date of the spring equinox, March 21, until 1752 when the Gregorian calendar was finally adopted. There must be twelve editions of the Acorn each year, the minutes do not have to include the names of those in attendance, except where it is involved with a report, but you have to list the number of people in attendance. SCA and mundane name must be listed in officer reports. There will be a handout sent to all Chroniclers with detail information required in each newsletter. The November issue of the Yeoman went out on time. Exchequer: Wanda Ostojowna (Wanda Kinnie) As deputy exchequer, I attended UnEvent and much was talked about. Atlantian 12th Night - Palio de Atlantia January 12-14, 2018 Kingdom of Atlantia Join us at the estate of Abigail il cigno, known as the Founder's Inn, contained within the boundaries of the Barony of Marinus, for a grand festival to be known as the Palio de Atlantia (Atlantian 12th Night) to be held on the 13th day of January, The Palio is a festival held to this day in Italy. Visitors would come from all over to attend. To keep the spirit of this, we are anchoring the event "in Italy" although we are not anchoring the time period. See the web site for more details on entering a horse, the Procession, and other details. Website: Midwinter's Feast January 27, 2018 Barony of Lochmere Greeting and salutations to all, and a well new year. We invite you to celebrate with Lochmere in our observance of Diwali, the festival of lights. As Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair, we thought it would be a great way to start this new year. Diwali is celebrated over five days, the name of festive days as well as the rituals of Diwali vary significantly among Hindus, based on the UPCOMING EVENTS region of India. In many parts of India, the festivities start with Dhanteras, followed by Naraka Chaturdasi on second day, Deepavali on the third day, Diwali Padva dedicated to wifeâ husband relationship on the fourth day, and festivities end with Bhaj Dooj dedicated to sisterâ brother bond on the fifth day. The festival begins usually eighteen days after Dussehra. It is one of the happy holidays where people dress in new clothes, buy gifts for family and close friends, and they hear tales of ancient battles where good triumphs over evil. The event will crescendo to an Indian feast prepared by Mistress Lisette LaRoux. Let all combatants from the baronies, cantons, shires, colleges, and border- marches that are in this most noble Kingdom of Atlantia and all other Known World Kingdoms know that on the 17th of February, in the Barony of Ponte Alto, there will be a very great festival of arms and a very noble tourney with weapons of measure and tourney swords, in appropriate armor, with coats of arms of the noble tourneyers, as is the ancient custom. The winner of the tourney will "crown" their consort with the halo of Love and Beauty. 8 Lore from the Larder illumination from The Luttrell Psalter Deviled Eggs Chagan style Whole eggs Dijon Mustard Yellow Mustard Dill Relish Horseradish Hot Mexican chili powder Salt & Pepper Mayonnaise with olive oil Garlic an option for especially Zingy deviled eggs Paprika served on the side if you want it. grubamerican.com Boil eggs for about 20 minutes gentle rolling boil. Let cool or cool by running cold water over them till they are cool enough to peel without burning your fingers. I have also found putting the cooled eggs in the refrigerator overnight and then peeling them the next day works well. *Note; older eggs peel easier. Slice eggs in half, break up yolks till they re all crumbled up (I use a fork or a dough blender*) and add ingredients. Dry first, then wet ingredients. Mix in and stir till it s all well blended. Fill eggs with mixture and eat. The ingredients listed are for my basic egg recipe. If you add in any sort of relish make sure you drain it well since it can add too much liquid and the filling gets runny. (ICK!) Sorry, no ingredient quantities are listed because it varies with the number of eggs and peoples tastes. I don t measure any of the ingredients. Ballpark quantities for one dozen eggs is (ROUGHLY) 3 large heaping tablespoons of mayonnaise, a heaping teaspoon of yellow mustard, 2 heaping teaspoons of Dijon mustard and a full, but not heaping, 1 teaspoon of ground or 2 teaspoons of wet horseradish. If you add relish or garlic a teaspoon or two (well drained) usually works. The hot Mexican chili powder is to taste, just sprinkle it in till you think you have enough. Remember you can always use more of any ingredient you like. Also keep in mind that you ll get different reactions to certain spices depending on whether they re fresh ground, dried or wet and how old any dry spices are. Try other ingredients as well. I added bacon bits once and they were quite popular. ** For a healthier deviled egg I use the mayonnaise with olive oil in it. Very nice taste and just a tad healthier. Real Mayonnaise is great as well, just a lot fattier. The Yeoman, January Volume 32: Issue 1

9 found in The Yeoman, January/February XXX A Blast From Our Past Atlantian 12 th Night Blizzard Song (God Rest You Bored Atlantians) retrieved from the Rialto by Alewyn Bruster To the Tune of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen God rest you bored Atlantians Let nothing you dismay We came to yule to spend the night And stayed for three whole days To get us home was a prospect That left us much dismayed. CHORUS: Oh, tidings of blizzards and no chains Blizzards and chains Oh, tidings of blizzards and no chains. When the snow came gently down At first we thought it grand And when the second food came down It covered all the land And when the third foot had arrived It got clear out of hand. Chorus When they closed the interstate We knew we could not leave The State police did block the way Despite our whines and pleas And when we did try to escape We crawled back on our knees. Chorus The Laurels in the snow did work To shape a Viking frame Ross and the Shrew did judge the lot And no two were the same The winner was the horse and man From Salisbury Plain. Chorus The drummers did goon And on and on and on And on and on and on and on And on and on and on And on and on and on and on And on and on and on. Chorus Our hosts at the Red Lion Inn Were short of hand that day And all of us Atlantians Did jump into the fray From low to high- born all did work To clear the snow away. Chorus The first place to receive our aid Was through the kitchen door We cooked and served for all our friends While Brigid mopped the floor Lord Yanos and Gavius Did drive folks to the store. Chorus If it should snow like this again Our fate be surely sealed We ll never leave this place by car E en if it be 4-wheeled Our pride hath brought us to this place But we to nature YIELD! 11 New Medieval Books Chaucer's People: Everday Lives in Medieval England by Liza Picard In the six centuries since Chaucer wrote about those sondry folk who were alle on their way to Canterbury, the bodies of his characters have decayed badly, leaving little more than bare bones in the minds of modern readers. Roles that would in the late 14th century have created instant assumptions are now fleshless. What are we supposed to think of a Franklin? A Yeoman? A Summoner? What even is a Summoner? Now, in Chaucer s People, the social historian Liza Picard is putting some of the flesh back on the skeleton of this, one of the earliest literary English works. Weidenfeld & Nicolson ISBN: Mother and Sons, Inc.: Martha de Cabanis in Medieval Montpellier By Kathryn L. Reyerson Excerpt: This is the story of Martha de Cabanis, a medieval woman of the mercantile milieu in the southern French town of Montpellier, a large commercial center of coastal Languedoc. Martha married, as did most of her contemporaries, but she was widowed early in the 1320s and left with three young sons, aged eleven, eight, and four. The extant written evidence records her actions as a widow and a guardian to her children and offers a window on the record of such a woman in that time and place. University of Pennsylvania Press ISBN: Seeking Sanctuary: Crime, Mercy, and Politics in English Courts, by Shannon McSheffrey Excerpt: This is a book about a practice that is distinctly non-modern, revealing structures of thought and attitudes towards wrongdoing that are often quite alien to our own. It is also a book the could only have been written in the digital age. For both the in-depth case studies and the broader gathering of data for the period , I have been dependent not only on old-fashioned hours combing through documents in the archives, but also on online repositories of archival document photographs (especially the invaluable Anglo-American Legal Traditions website), digitized texts and studies, the power of internet search engines, and the analytical capacities of database and spreadsheet programs. If my conclusions challenge many of the arguments made by previous historians of sanctuary in medieval and Tudor England, this is at least partly because our digital landscape allowed me to find things and make connections that others before me could not have done. 12 Past Knowledge Tips from books of yore How to Prevent Drunkeness, 1612 "Shew me a way how a man may drinke much wine and yet not be drunke. To drinke great store of wine, and not to be drunke, you must eate of the rosted lungs of a Goat: or otherwise, eate sixe or seaven bitter Almonds fasting: or otherwise, eate raw Coleworts before you drinke, and you shall not become drunk. How to make them which are drunk sober. You must make them eate Coleworts, and some manner of confections made of brine; or else drink great draughts of vinegar." William Vaughan, Approved Directions for Health "A Looking-Glass for Drunkards," 17th How to Dress Warmly, c Lyon, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 5128, f. 114v Dress well, wear good shoes, and when you go outside, wear overshoes so that your feet will be warm. And don t make a 'sausage' hat for yourself as some people do, because they are not good. And when you see the other students wearing their caps, you should too, and a fur cap, if necessary. And at night when you study, you should wear a nightcap over the cap and around your cheeks. And when you go to sleep at night, you should wear a white nightcap on your head and covering your cheeks and another colored one on top, since the head should be kept warmer at night than during the day. And during the rainy season, it s good to wear another cap or helmet over your cap so that your head doesn t get wet. Actually, some people wear a helmet over the cap in nice weather, but especially when it s cold, so that they can remove the helmet in the presence of important people without taking off the cap. And take care of your boots and make sure your feet aren t filthy.
