1 Year 6 News SATs Diary Dates Results: 3rd March Year 6 Parents All our hard-work and focus Evening was finally rewarded when our SATs 4th March Results came through Netball this match month. 68% against of us Codicote achieved Level 4s in Literacy, and 10% scored Level 5, 10th while March in Maths 78% got Year Level 5/64s Indoor and a truly Athletics amazing 54% of us Championships made it to Level 5. Well done everyone for 8th the July great results. July 2011 What we ve been doing this term... An astonishing term of sport... A brilliant year of school sport built to an amazing finish this term, with Bedwell representing Stevenage in 3 different sports at the Herts Schhols Games. Having won the Stevenage Netball Festival, our Year 6s were chosen to take part in the High-5 tournament (a mixed, 5-a-side version of Netball), finishing an impressive 8th in County, despite coming up against teams who were all several inches taller than us. Meanwhile, our Boys Cricket team, who had won the Stevenage Tournament just two weeks before, won the right to represent Stevenage too, though their event was unfortunately cancelled due to rain. Finally, our Year 3/4 tennis team, having also won their Stevenage Tournament, represented our town in the Tennis Championships, finishing a brilliant 9th in the County! In the Athletics Championships, held at Ridlins on June 16th, we were selected to lead the procession around the track (above), as this year s most successful school. In the competition itself, Shannon won the Year 5/6 Ball Throw, Jasmine finished 3rd in the Javelin and Daniel came 2nd in the Boys Ball Throw, helping us to win the overall Small Schools Competition. As a result of all these amazing achievements - along with all the other competitions we ve won this year, including the Y5 girls Cross-Country, Y5/6 Lacrosse, and both Girls and Boys Indoor Athletics, we have been nominated by Stevenage Sports Partnership for the Primary School of the Year award at this year s County Sports Awards.

2 Football Year 6 News : July 2011 A terrific end to the season saw the Year 5/6 Boys team secure their highest ever league finish, (fifth in Division Two), and miss out on promotion by just 3 points, As a result, Bedwell moved up 6 places in the Stevenage rankings this year., and will be pushing hard for promotion next season. Meanwhile, the Girls team had a fantastic year, playing in the top division for the first time and finishing in a brilliant fourth place. Athletics Both our Boys and Girls Indoor Athletics teams won their Stevenage Tournaments back in March, which meant that we were selected to represent Stevenage at the County Championships in both competitions. This term, we had even more success at the track Athletics Championships, held at Ridlins Stadium in June, where Shannon, Jasmine, Daniel and Seda all won medals and the team finished first in the Small Schools Competition.

3 July 2011 : Year 6 News Netball It s been another brilliant year for our Year 6 Netball team, who won the Stevenage Festival in the Spring, and lost just one league game all season to finish as League Runners-Up. As a result, we were selected for a playoff to decide who would represent Stevenage at the County High-5 tournament. We won our play-off, and consequently our High-5 team travelled to Hatfield University to represent our town in the Herts Youth Games, finishing 8th Cricket Our Year 5/6 Boys team stormed to victory in the Stevenage Cricket Cup this term, winning all of their games by over 50 runs through a combination of hard-hitting, very accurate bowling and great team-work in the field. Once again this meant that we were selected to represent Stevenage at the Herts Youth Game, held at Hatfield University in June, but unfortunately, after playing just one game the event was cancelled because of rain.

4 Dragon Boating Year 6 News : July 2011 On 26th May, 22 members of Year 6 headed down to Fairlands Lakes for this year s Dragonboating Festival. Having had just 20 minutes practice a couple of days before, we weren t sure what to expect as we setup camp outside the café and looked out across the Lake at the narrow boats that we d be rowing. However, we don t do scared, so our first team soon in their boat, with lifejackets on and oars in hand. With Jasmine bashing away on her drum and Lorelle, Adam, David and Arees giving our boat some real power, they whizzed down the lake in their heat, and were left to cross their fingers to see if they d qualified for the knock-out stage in the afternoon. 45 minutes later, it was the turn of Bedwell B, under the leadership of Donna s drumming they put in a great turn of speed in the second half of their race, coming back from second place to narrowly win their heat too, thanks to some excellent

5 July 2011 : Year 6 News rowing from Daniel, Rhea, Sophia and Magda. While we waited to find out how we d got on, it was time to try out some of the other events going on around the Park. As always, we loved the climbing wall, quickly scrambling up and down the tricky holds. Over in the boating lake, meanwhile, Reece managed to soak himself after falling out of his dinghy for the day s only drenching! Lastly, groups of us got to try out the sailing boat in the main lake, and thanks to the blustery conditions we got up an impressive turn of speed, with the boat leaning impressively on the turns! After lunch, and in the pouring rain, we found out how we had got on. The top 6 teams qualified for the semi-finals in the afternoon, which meant that our A team (who had the fourth fastest time of the morning) were back in action! Rowing in the second semi, we were edged out into second place by half-a -boat length, and unfortunately our time meant we missed out on the final by just 1½ seconds, finishing fourth overall.

8 Sports Week Year 6 News : July 2011 This year, we celebrated National Sports Week with a packed schedule of games, workshops and events. First of all, we were impressed by the skills of The NED Show - a Yo-Yo demonstration which was very profitable for Year 6, with Alex S awarded a free yo-yo for his great answers and Georgie and Shannon getting theirs in return for helping to fit yo-yo strings. Next up, the Row Show, run by Stevenage Sports Partnership, saw us involved in some frantic rowing machine work in the hall. We also got to make smoothies using bicycle-powered blenders, before the highlight of the week, our Sports Day. Some fantastic performances (and cheering) from across Year 6 made the event really close coming down to the last few events, with Angel s victory in the sprint one of the morning s most impressive surprises. However, in the end it was left to David and Lorelle to collect the Sports Day trophy, after Pluto (our blue team) came out on top, beating Jupiter by just 3 points.

9 July 2011 : Year 6 News KNEX Challenge On 11th June we took part in our first ever KNEX Challenge. A visiting engineer gave us a design brief, and we had about 2 hours to experiment, design and build a suitable solution, using KNEX. Having practiced building towers, cars, bridges and houses using KNEX earlier in the week, we were feeling confident - especially when we discovered that the challenge was to build another bridge! However, this time our bridges had to move, which made the challenge really tough. By the end of the morning, we d learnt lots more about the way KNEX works, and about how to build gears, winches and pullies, and you can see some of our finished models in the photos on the left. Peter, our visiting engineer, eventually decided that Lorelle s and Jasmine s arched bridge was the winner. Moreover, their design was entered into a countywide contest, and we were delighted to discover that, out of over 1500 entries, they had been chosen as runners-up!

10 Beach Disco Year 6 News : July 2011 Just before halfterm we had our first disco of the term, with a beach theme, complete with flower garlands, coconut shy, limbo dancing and an awful lot of shorts! As always, Year 6 partied in our trademark frenetic style, throwing ourselves into the spirit with some impressive limbo-ing from Adam and Wade (as you can see on the right), and some whole -hearted demolition of Mr Holgate s coconuts! We had a brilliant evening and, better still, raised over 400 for the School Council Fund in the process.

11 July 2011 : Year 6 News Leavers Disco Our final event of the term was the Leavers Disco. It was a lovely (and rather emotional) evening, as we all tried to get our heads around the fact that, after seven or eight years, we only had one day of primary school left, before the big move up to secondary school. Determined to enjoy ourselves, therefore, several of us put on our West Side Story outfits for one last time, and Alex Sabine (as always) led some highly energetic (and impressively synchronised) dancing. It was great to see everyone getting on so well together, and to realise how much we ve all grown-up over the last year.

12 Chessington Visit Year 6 News : July 2011 On 29th June, Year 6 boarded our coach and headed-off to Chessington, as a wellearned reward for all our hard-work leading up to our SATs in May. After a long journing, we had a brilliant day, with tiny queues meaning we practically ran onto every ride - and were therefore twirling, turning, falling and screaming for 5 hours solid! Dragons Fury, the Rattlesnake and the Log Flume were particular favourites, and Mr Roberts and Mrs Moore were really impressed both by how brave we were (with Donna, Brandon and Ethan regularly standing on tip-toes in an effort to make the height limit on rides) and how well behaved we were throughout the day. We arrived back at school exhausted, but the huge grins on most of our faces clearly showed how much we d enjoyed our day out.
