1 CELEBRATING 27 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter American Singles Golf Association October 2018 President s News Hello golfers, Hard to believe we are in the fourth quarter of We are down to golf makeup events, but we still have the banquet coming up on November 3rd. This is always a great event and not to be missed. I am doing something a little different for our awards this year and would like to just give out one award recognizing the "KCSGA Member of the Year" It should be a person you think best represents the great characteristics of our group. It could be the best golfer, most improved golfer, the best sport, the most helpful, the one who volunteers the most time, the person that makes you feel the most welcome... I could go on, but I want you to think of who embodies the best characteristics of our group. I will be handing out ballets at our meeting this coming Thursday to identify names and why you think they are the most deserving. If you are not going to make it to the meeting, please me personally at Ddeleon@kansascity homes.com In addition to the banquet, we have a Halloween party coming up. We will also have our Holiday party at Birdies on December 20th. It has been designated as an alumni event and our married alumni are invited to attend. Last but not least, New Year s Eve will be at my home again, more to follow. As this wet 2018 golf season approaches its end, I would like to thank Donna D and all of the board members for their efforts in making it another great year. With the 2019 golf season just around the corner, I would like to report that I m in the process of finalizing the team for next year s board. I would like to thank everyone who expressed an interest in serving on the board. I will be announcing your 2019 board soon. The success of our golf group is dependent on the participation of its members. At September s general meeting we were able to raise $ by raffling off a certificate for four greens fees to Shoal Creek. Richard R was the holder of that winning ticket. I would also like to thank Bob M and Curtis M for their golf ball donations for our silent auction. At October s general meeting we will be raffling off a certificate for four greens fees at Winterstone. Don t miss your chance! All for now. Thank you to all 30 of the players who made the trip to the Ozarks. We had a wonderful time and had unbelievably great weather. We had a great time golfing at The Ridge at The Lodge of Four Seasons on Friday, Osage National on Saturday, and 26 of us golfed Sunday at Redfield Course in Eugene, Missouri, as we returned home. We enjoyed a great BBQ dinner from Bandana's which was delivered Friday evening. Our room accommodations were comfortable and some rooms had a scenic view of the lake (i.e., after we found out the key opened the door to the kitchen and living area). There was a little confusion about payment for the buffet at Osage National, but everything worked out. The screenedin porch was a comfortable place after our round. We were glad to have Donna M join us each evening for dinner. A big shoutout to Julie for all her work as golf chair this year. Again, big thanks to all you special peeps for making the weekend memorable! Kenna H Dub s Dread scheduled for Oct 6 th was cancelled due to inclement weather. Lakewood Oaks scheduled for Oct 14 th was cancelled due inclement weather. Last Golf Outing for 2018: Sycamore Ridge, Sunday October 21 st hosted by Sara S & Julie R ~Julie Robertson., Golf Chairperson Social News Report Well it feels like winter! We didn t have a fall. We just seemed to jump right into winter. No surprises there! October First Friday was at Thee Gin Mill and was a great success with at least 40 people in attendance. Fun was had by all! Peggy S is hosting a Halloween party on Saturday, October 27th at her home at 7944 Falmouth St., Prairie Village, KS. Cost is $10 per person, BYOB. There is a limit of 40 guests. Costumes are encouraged, but not required. Time to start thinking about your costume... There will not be a November First Friday. The Annual Awards Banquet is Saturday, November 3rd at Blue Hills Country Club located at 777 W Burning Tree Dr., Kansas City, MO. Dress attire ranges from cocktail attire, dressy casual, and country club casual. But, don t worry about that, just come and have fun with your fellow golfers. Cocktail party begins at 6:00 PM, dinner at 7:00 PM, awards ceremony at 8:00 PM, followed by a DJ spinning our favorite dance songs. The cost is $50 for members and $55 for guests, which includes two drink tickets, appetizers, dinner and dessert, awards ceremony, drawings for raffle prizes, dancing, and socializing with our best friends. We already have 57 people signed up. The deadline to signup is October 24th. There will be a signup sheet at the October general meeting at Birdies to make your reservation and make your food selections. Entrée: Chicken, Salmon, or Top Sirloin All entrées include a house salad, Yukon Gold potatoes, asparagus, rolls and butter, coffee and tea. Dessert: Chocolate peppermint ice cream cake roll w/hot fudge, whipped cream, and strawberry or Cherry Cheese Cake Please make your check payable to KCSGA. If you cannot attend the meeting on Thursday, you can me your reservation and food selections, and mail your check to Cheryl Settle at Lake Road 10, Gardner, KS December First Friday Location TBD The December 20 th general meeting at Birdies will be our Christmas party. 3 Membership News Sadly, we are almost done for another year with our scheduled golf events. Other than losing a few events to weather, the rest of the season was great. It is always fun playing with this group and I hate putting the sticks away for a few months. At least we have the CHIEFS to keep us busy. We are excited to welcome one new member to the group for the month of September. Robin DiFilippo joined our group and we are glad she did. Keep an eye out for the New Member articles to learn more about our latest members. Welcome to the group Robin! Our total membership is currently 105. We had four guests at the September First Friday and four guests at the monthly general meeting. Don t forget to RSVP for the monthly meetings and First Friday events at CitySinglesGolf. KCSGA had 114 members ending December ~Bev Hembree, Communications Chairperson Spotlight on New Members MEET RICK MOORE Hello golfing friends! I joined this great group in June of this year. Here is a little bit about me. I was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up on Long Island where I spent my summers at the beach and was an avid surfer in my youth and, of course, "The Beach Boys" were always blaring from my radio. I left NY after graduating Farmingdale JUCO. From there I headed to Kansas State to pursue my dream of becoming a veterinarian. While at K State I met a farmer s daughter, Janelle Jones. JJ and I married on October 3, I did not make it to veterinarian school as Nixon had other ideas and did away with student deferments. I got a low lottery number out of NY. Anyway, I then enlisted in the US Navy where I became a Communications Tech working in naval intelligence. JJ and I spent three years in Washington DC, during the Watergate scandal, and was an interesting time. I had some very interesting assignments, you can ask me about them, but then... We had our first son at Andrews AFB in From there we headed to Japan. We spent three years near Tokyo and had our second son made in Japan" LOL! After being overseas for three years, we decided the NAVY was not a career choice. After leaving Japan, I started my career with Hewlett Packard as a Computer Engineer in Minnesota. Eight years (with seven white Thanksgivings brrrr!!) and one son later, I was transferred to Wichita where I spent my remaining career. After 34 years with HP, I retired in Three years later my wife retired and we moved here to be closer to family in So, we were here three years when my wife suddenly passed away this February. I have three sons: one in Stillwell, he has two boys and a girl; one in St Louis, he has a boy and a girl; and one in Chicago, he has a girl. One interesting thing about my boys, although there is about seven years between youngest and oldest, they all three got married just 11 months apart... it was a busy year! MEET ROBIN DIFILIPPO Hello KCSGA! I ve been playing golf for one year and my favorite course is Tomahawk Hills. I ve never had a hole in one, YET! I found out about the group through the internet. I grew up in Lenexa and Shawnee and I currently live in east Kansas City, Mo. I have a 32 year old daughter and a cat. My dad is still living and I have some extended family in town, in Kansas especially. I work in insurance services at ExamOne in Lee s Summit. In memory of Tom Easterly who was an inspiration to all. Tom celebrated his 98 th birthday in March of this year. He was a longtime ASGA member and a great friend to many. He passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 14 th. Please keep Tom s family in your thoughts and prayers.
