1 MARCH 2017 Newsletter for Windyke Country Club The Club For more information visit our website WINDYKE WELCOMES NEWfullMEMBERS Members Greg Hynes General Manager Luke, Andrew and their crew have been hard at work continuing to thin the dense West course tree lines and adding new sprinkler coverage. They repaired a waterfall on 18 and added some drainage between 9 and 18 as well as numerous other off season projects. Their off season efforts each year continue to provide better quality turf coverage all over the property. In fact the entire staff has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. Brent, Dean and the Member Board Tournament Committee have made minor tweaks to the Windyke Cup and the men s night program based on considerable feedback from you our members. In fact committees for golf, swim and tennis have been working with our staff to make sure each of their areas are ready for your enjoyment this season. The junior golf camps and tennis clinics and play day schedules are out on the website, just call the appropriate department for more details or to sign up. Discounted rates apply through March *As long as both you and your friend remain members. New Member Discounts only apply to new memberships (those who have not been a member of Windyke in the last six months) associated with Full, Intermediate, Senior, Junior and Weekday categories. Referring members will see a 10 percent discount off of your current dues amount if you refer an eligible new member, regardless of which membership category you are in. If you recruit more than one member, or you recruit Tennis or Executive members, you ll receive a facility credit equal to one month s dues of the type member recruited. This credit can be used for purchases of carts, food, merchandise, lessons and more. If you are currently a Tennis, Executive, or Weekday member and want to upgrade, you are also entitled to incentives. Any member who upgrades will pay the new discounted (10 percent off) dues for the upgraded category, but must sign a one year commitment. Pick a day, bring your friends to visit Windyke, and then let us do the rest. We want you to bring others to your club so that every member will benefit from lower rates and a vibrant club. But what about your golf game? What are you doing to not just improve but to get more enjoyment out of it? Whether you fit into Men s Night, the Ladies Association or our Windyke Cup tournaments we are sure to have a fit for you. This year all of our leagues, groups and tournament programs have been modified with the help of your feedback. So, there has never been a better time to jump in. Don t forget your kids! We have a great year planned for them as well. Last year was the first year of our Windyke Junior League. It was a huge success and we will be expanding the programing for this year. This exciting group will consist of 6-12 year olds in a team golf setting. The different teams will be captained by our professional staff and will compete against one another here at the club. Junior Golf Clubs: U.S. Kids Golf With Windyke s Junior Golf League just around the corner your little golfers will be begging to go to the golf course! Do they have clubs yet? Even if they do they probably have grown out of them since last summer. We carry U.S. Kids Clubs because of their 9 unique sizes and 2 different swing speed options. This is a fantastic company to trust your child s golf game to because they only make children s equipment. Let s get your little ones geared up for all that our Junior Golf Leagues and Junior Camps have to offer. Time an issue? 3 TRIPLE FORMAT April 8 - West Course 9:00 Shotgun 8:00 Breakfast If you have never played in a Triple Format event, then you owe it to yourself to check this one out. The way a Triple Format works is the first six holes is a best ball, the second six is a scramble and the last six is an alternate shot. This year s event will be a two-person, one-day competition with breakfast before play. This is one of those formats that players talk about and tell stories for years to come. So if you are looking to kick start your golf tournament season with a fun event, then this one is for you! Guidelines are as follows: Two-Person Teams Make Your Own Team or sign up as an individual and we will pair you. This event is open to all classifications of members and each team may have 1 guest Each team s handicap is based on the following formula using a player s USGA index: Sum of the two players index minus ½ of the difference. Example: Greg Hynes 4.0 Russ Garner =4.25 We will then use the team s index to flight the teams before play. Once your team s handicap has been used for flighting purposes, it will not be used again. If you do not have a full team, we can help you find a player. Windyke Cup points event! Entry fee is $100 including cart and is payable by member charge, cash or check (includes prizes, cart and breakfast). All players canceling after April 8 at 5:00 p.m. will be charged for the entry fee. 4 2017 Women s League Sign-Up The Windyke Ladies Golf Association cordially invites all golfers to attend our sign-up meeting on Tuesday, March 7, starting at 9:00 am. We have great plans for Our two groups have all levels of players, from the new golfer to the seasoned golfer. Come have a cup of coffee and hear how much fun playing with the girls can be! Our first play day will be Tuesday, April 4, starting at 9:00 am for both our Nine and Eighteen hole groups. FROM THE BOARD March is the month when we start thinking about spring golf with the weather warming up. This year has been unusual with February being warmer than normal. The tournament schedule is set and the Board of Directors at Windyke supports the activities around these tournaments and league play. The tournament schedule can be found within Golf Course News on the Windyke website. We encourage you to participate in these events as I think you will find it rewarding to meet fellow members who love to play golf and socialize. Daylight savings time begins March 12 which will allow you to practice and play in preparation for the upcoming tournament season. 5 Join the Swim Team! Starting March 1st, registration for the 2017 swim team will begin! We are excited to announce our new head coach, Bess Warren. Bess has 20+ years as a successful swim coach; mostly recently with the Bluff City Blue Fins. To sign-up or to receive more information about the Windyke Piranhas swim team, please visit, Windyke Junior Golf League As mentioned before, good weather is just around the corner and there will be a fun filled spring and summer of activities for your children. What are you going to do to get them golf ready? Our Windyke Junior Golf League is the perfect introduction into actually playing golf competitively regardless of their current skill. Our league is scaled to their age and ability because it is solely at the Executive Par 3 course and is set up in team format where they can learn as a group about how to play our great game. Within this league our juniors will be divided amongst teams coached individually by our professional staff (Brock Shaffer, Chris Braim, Andrew Argotsinger, and myself) where they will compete against each other teams in a 6-hole matchplay format on Saturdays throughout the summer. Prior to these matches each coach will prepare his team through group clinics with application towards real playing. New this year, we will be allowing already participating members to sponsor non-members to compete as well. So, if your child has a friend that would like to play as well they are invited too. Detailed information of our league is as follows, call the pro shop to sign up WHO: Any child or grandchild of a member. Ages NEW - Non-members may participate if sponsored by a participating member. WHAT: Combination of clinics and matches. Total of 3½ hours of professional instruction; coupled with 6 6-hole team matches. WHEN: Sign up by calling the golf shop, , anytime throughout April. Opening Day: May 6th (90 Min. Clinic and Team arrangement exercise) Team Practices: May 13th and 27th (60 min each) Team Matches: June 3rd, 10th, 24th; July 1st, 8th, 22nd AWARDS POOL PARTY: TBA ***Practice and match times will be TBA at a later date. WHERE: This is the best part! Each practice/match will be held at Windyke. No traveling! 8 Tip from the Pro Brock Shafer Director of Instruction Windyke CC Before I get to my tip of the month, remember that March is a great month to start planning to enroll in our development programs. The website is accurate with all the 2017 dates and many clinics have online registration. Our spring break junior camps are slated for March The summer clinics, junior club teams, playdays, and overnight camps are all on the calendar. Ladies clinics and Get Golf Ready clinics(great for newcomers or beginning players) are coming up as well. Utilize your membership by getting more involved for the whole family. Go to windyke.com and check out all that is available here at Windyke! As far as a tip for the month of March, let me help you ease back in I will frame this tip with an example. Dustin Johnson won the Genesis Open at The Riviera CC in Los Angeles recently. I used to caddy there in the late 90 s when I was competing on mini tours and trying to make my way as a player. Anyway, on Saturday, Dustin Johnson hit a ¾ 7 iron from 166 to 10 feet and made birdie. He can hit a 9 iron that far, but chose not to. Even though he is known for his power off the tee, it is his wedge play that has made the difference. He is now the tour s best wedge player over the last year because of this ¾ type swing. ¾ shots flight the ball lower and allow the shot to feel more like a chip than a blast. The body and arms work in much better coordination as well. This calibrates your swing at the same time and teaches you to swing within yourself. My tip for all of you coming back to the range for the new season is to start by hitting only ¾ shots, from the wedge to even the driver! You will notice immediately that accuracy is improved. You will find contact improved. As you layer on power the swing will stay more in tune. Start with ½ power and work up to ¾. If you are struggling with contact while playing, simply shift back to the ¾ swing. Make accuracy and contact your priority this spring and worry about distance last.
