On behalf of the Membership Committee, I am proud to report that we have enjoyed great success with 48 new members joining since the campaign started and 14 members upgrading their membership category. Of course some of our old friends have resigned, and we wish them the best. The Membership Campaign still has momentum, and we hope for continued growth as the season progresses. Our branding message is being reinforced by social media outreach and by our staff working very hard to make membership growth a priority for our continued success. Kudos to Brian and Megan for their efforts. You will see a lot of new faces around the Club in the coming weeks. As existing members, we have the opportunity to reach out to these new members and make them feel welcome. The new members might need a bit of help finding out about all the good things the Club has to offer; so please take a moment and introduce yourselves. To the new members, welcome. There are many resources available to you to get to know what is going on at the Club. For the golfers, please speak with Brian or Ryan about the golfing opportunities, which are many. There are several ladies and men s groups which play during the week and on the weekends, and the contact information for those groups can be provided by the golf shop. The web site, club calendar, The Chronicle, and the weekly s will keep you up to date on social and dining opportunities. Social events are well supported by the membership and provide an excellent opportunity to meet new people and form new and lasting friendships. If the Membership Committee can help, please feel free to contact us. We want to help make your experience at Cripple Creek to be the best it can be. New Members Jim & Tracey Bradley Walter & Mary Buckert Peter & Eileen Handy Brian & Cara Hughey Daniel & JoAnn McGaughey William & Susan McGovern Michael & Melissa Strunk Jon & Courtney Szymanski
3 Page 3 GREENS COMMITEE REPOR T by Pete Fronczek Spring aeration went well. Unfortunately the weather turned cool and damp right after aeration and this slowed the initial healing of the greens. The recent warm weather has been beneficial and by the time you read this article our greens should be in their usual excellent condition. I d like to talk about tree management at Cripple Creek. Last month an agronomist from the USGA toured our course. He had high praise for the condition of the golf course and the recent work accomplished by Superintendent Glen MacDonald. Although Glen has removed numerous trees over the years, the USGA agronomist recommended more work be done in this area. Glen s philosophy for tree removal is that trees should be removed if they pose a safety risk to people or property; where they have a negative affect on turf health; where several trees are growing in an area where one is appropriate weakening them all; or where they have a negative affect on playability. The USGA agronomist endorsed this approach. He also pointed out the hidden costs that poor tree management has on the grounds budget. Most grounds budgets have money allocated for planting and removal of trees. However, the costs for pruning; leaf pickup in the fall; and the periodic cleanup of branches, acorns, pine cones, and other seedpods are usually considered routine labor costs. In addition damage to mowers and other equipment from tree debris significantly increases equipment repair costs. A sound tree management program will allow labor and repair savings to be reallocated to other critical areas of the golf course. In the next few months the Greens Committee will undertake a hole-byhole evaluation of the issues that need to be addressed on each hole including the removal of problematic trees. MISGA by Robert Allen Thursday, June 8, an away mixer at Wild Quail in Camden Wyoming, Delaware Tuesday, June 13, Qualifier for the MISGA wide Two Man tournament, at Garrisons Lake Thursday, June 15, we are hosting a home mixer here at Cripple Creek Monday, June 19, an away mixer at Eagle Creek in Dover, sign up deadline is June 5 Tuesday, June 27, an away mixer at Jonathans Landing in Magnolia, Delaware Thursday, June 29, an away mixer at Choptank River, in Cambridge, MD Wild Quail is always a popular place to go; the course is great. I am sure we will be doing some car pooling, so consider signing up for Wild Quail. The Two man MISGA wide tournament is one where you sign up as a team. Your team has to qualify at Garrisons Lake on Tuesday, June 13, and if your team qualifies, you will be obligated to participate in the MISGA wide tournament, which will be held on Thursday, August 3 at Wild Quail. More information on the Two Man tournament is available on line at misga.org. If you have questions about MISGA, or if you want to join, Robert Allen at jwa37@comcast.net, or call

We had 72 golfers, nice weather, and excellent pace-of-play. Andy and his staff, as usual, put out a nice buffet dinner to cap off a great start to the Twilights. Following dinner, we had the draw for teams to compete in the Opening Day tournament. This was a change in format from past Opening Day tournament format. Well, based on the turnout and post-tournament feedback it was a big success. Players had an opportunity to play with people they had not previously met or played with, making for a fun day. Hopefully before you get to read this, our new mats will be installed and fully ready, including 2 additional spots. We had our latest Ace, from Don Boteler, on May 9 th, who made his hole-inone on No. 4, into a stiff wind, from 109 yards, using his trusty 9 iron. Now we are rapidly moving into the summer season, I want to request that anyone making multiple tee times, for a group of players, be mindful of other members and verify 48 hours prior that all the times will be used, or cancel those which will not be used, so the Pro Shop will have them available to release for booking. Another issue that always seems to come up in the summer, high density months is Pace-of-Play. Please be mindful of your pace of play and keep up with the group ahead. Our course is rated to be played in 4 hours and 10 minutes for a foursome. Ways to help keep pace up include: Be at the 1 st tee a few minutes before your tee time Watch the flight of everyone s tee shot, not just your own Plat ready golf when it is not a competition Mark your ball and lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. You can usually line up your putt while others are putting, without disturbing them. Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee, and leave the green promptly after holing out Recording scores at the next tee box Gentlemen, remember, we have a locker room. If you want to change your shirt after playing, please do it in the locker room, not the parking lot. Our Junior Program, headed up by Ryan, is off to a great start. We have it posted on our Facebook page, and our website. Also for those who have not seen the flyer, Ryan is conducting Tuesday (walk-up) and Thursday (sign-up) clinic for specialized areas of the game. Private lessons are available by appointment with the specific instructor. I have noticed a decrease in the number of tees left on the tee box, and the number of un-filled divots on the course. Thank you for that. Now don t forget your pitch marks on the greens. I know they are had to see, but noticeable reduction in the number of tees, broken and whole, that are being left on the tee boxes. Good work, and if you see any, throw them into the long grass. Everyone always hears about pace of play well, there is a very good book, Golf s Pace of Play Bible by Lucius Riccio, available on Kindle. A big well done, and congratulations to Sueann Bennett, for her hole-in-one on #16. She said it was 109 yards with an 8 iron, but it was April 1 (Fools Day) so...hit m straight and enjoy.
