1 PRIVATE CLUB MATTERS SEPTEMBER 2012 NEW AND IMPROVED We are expanding our very popular Trivia Challenge game, and beginning in October there will be four evenings per month to play the game and socialize with fellow members. As in past seasons, the first and second Friday of each month have been reserved for dinner and Trivia. New this season, two Trivia Nights on the third and fourth Wednesdays of the month will be added. The calendar in your Membership Handbook will indicate the dates. Along with the weekly games, we will run a season-long competition. The regular Trivia Challenge games will serve as a qualifier for the new Trivia Championship. The new Trivia Championship will be played on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the PGA Country Club. Teams that have participated in the past will have priority to register for their evening of play. Newly formed teams will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis for the remaining evenings. The maximum number of teams permitted to play in one evening is 15. Anyone interested in playing Trivia, who is not already on a team, should contact Service Manager, Maria Valinote, at or mvalinote@pgahq.com. She will assist in forming new teams. There is a minimum of 8 players and a maximum of 10 players per team. Teams must form a Starting Line Up, select a team captain and submit the roster to Maria. The captain is responsible for organizing the team, turning in menu selections as one order to Maria and collecting the cash entry at each game. A list of substitutes should also be included when registering your team. Individual members are limited to one Starting Line Up, but may substitute on a different team. The entry fee is $5.00 (cash) per player, per game. The top 4 teams each game will split the cash pot as follows: 1st = 40% 2nd = 30% 3rd = 20% 4th = 10% To qualify for the Trivia Championship we will award points to every team as follows: 1st = 100 2nd = 75 3rd = 50 4th = 25 (All other teams will Receive 15 for playing.) 3 PAGE 3 OF 6 GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH PROPER BALL POSITION By Jamie Fordyce, PGA To consistently hit your shot on your target line, the ball position is one of the most important pre-swing fundamentals that you need to focus on. When taking your stance, make sure the club head rests flat on the ground with the shaft facing your target, then put the ball under the left side of your face with all the clubs except the driver. The ball position for the driver is played off your front foot, about two inches ahead of the left side of your face. If your ball position is not correct, you cannot hit the ball consistently. If you play the ball too far forward in your stance, you will tend to hit the ball thin with too high a flight. If the ball is too far back in the stance you will hit the ball fat with too low a flight. REVIEW Club head rests flat on the ground with the shaft facing your target Put the ball under the left side of your face The driver is played off your front foot HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB NEW POLICIES By Ray Rash, PGA There is a new plan for the Hole-In-One Club that will go into effect October 1, The fee has been reduced from $2.00 per person to $1.00 per membership, and will be billed to each participating member s account ONLY when a hole-in-one is made. Another new twist is that when a hole-in-one occurs, the fund will be awarded as a credit to the member who made the HIO. That member will have the freedom to use the winnings as they wish, whether buying drinks for their playing partners or purchasing merchandise in the golf shop. Members will not be permitted to use the credit toward their dues. As in the past, participation in the Hole-In-One Club will remain optional. 5 PAGE 5 OF 6 PGA GOLF CLUB WELCOMES NEW CHEFS CHEF CHARLES DEIBERT Chef Charles has been a resident of Florida since 1988 when his family moved here from California. His culinary background started back when he was 16-years-old working at McDonald s and Subway while in high school. Soon after, he found himself working for Martin Downs Country Club as a busboy and prep cook. This is where he discovered his love for the kitchen and cooking. During the following years, he worked for a variety of restaurants and clubs. He made his way through the ranks of the kitchen, and found a place in management where he excelled quickly. Over 12 years, Charles managed a number of corporate restaurants including Millers Ale House in Jensen Beach and the St. Lucie Draft House. He worked with Chef Dorny Russell here at PGA for a season, and left to pursue a degree at Florida Culinary Institute of West Palm Beach in Culinary Arts and Management. Charles competed and won competitions through school and maintained a 3.9 grade point average. While in school, Chef Charles gained experience working for the Breakers of the Palm Beaches and as a Chef and a Sous Chef at Guanabanas in Jupiter. He says Now that I have found a great home here at PGA, I am devoted to providing the award winning service I have gained over years of experience. CHEF JUAN SERRANO Chef Juan was born in Puerto Rico, but has been a resident of St. Lucie County for over 22 years. He graduated from Florida Culinary Institute of West Palm Beach in 1996 with Honors and is a member of the American Culinary Federation (ACF ) with over 15 years of experience. Juan has played a variety of roles within the kitchen, from Line Cook to Corporate Executive Chef, and his career has taken him all the way from Melbourne to Key West. CHEF CHARLES DEIBERT One of Juan s highest accomplishments was when he managed all of the food and beverage for the Secret Service during President Clinton s visit to Florida in CHEF JUAN SERRANO His passion for food was learned from his father, who was an Executive Chef for over 35 years. A family man himself, Juan is a proud father of three and has been married for over 22 years. He says, I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of the PGA family and to be at your service.
