I want to extend a sincere thank you for all of the members who came out to make the Memorial Day weekend at the pool such a great weekend. We had a great crowd of people ready to kick summer off and start another great season at Hillendale. I am excited and grateful to be back this summer as your pool manager and I hope that my staff and I can make this the best summer yet. We are excited about our new group swim lesson program and improvements being made to the game room as well as other improvements around the pool area. I would like to remind you of a couple rules that will ensure all of the members enjoyment of the pools this summer. Equipment for the game room and courts must be checked out from and returned to a lifeguard to ensure the quality of our toys. Children wearing swimmies or lifejackets may not go off the diving board or down the slide unless their parent is in the water or actively watching the child from the side. Children that are not toilet trained (even if they are wearing swim diapers) are not allowed in the lower or upper pools. All members should sign their families and any guests in at the pool front desk upon arrival. Guest fees are $7 on weekdays and $9 on weekends and holidays. Our number one priority is safety for all members and their guests. Please make sure that your behavior and the behavior of your children follow the pool rules and the directions of the lifeguards on duty. Please contact me directly with ways that I can help make your pool experience the best it can be. I am looking forward to a great summer! 8 Golf Course Superintendent Since Labor Day of last year we have been on the offensive in regards to strengthening the playing surfaces, and in particular the greens. Now that the summer season is upon us, we will be switching to more of a defensive strategy. Some of the work we have done to strengthen the turf plants are: Removed 70 trees to increase sunlight and air movement Pruned over 125 trees to increase air movement Sprayed the greens with BioStimulants to encourage rooting and density Sprayed growth regulators to limit vertical growth and direct energy to carbohydrate production Applied Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium to greens in accordance with soil tests to balance the soil Core aerified the greens to reduce organic matter and increase water infiltration Vented the greens to increase water and air exchange Limited mowing during saturated ground conditions As the summer progresses, we will be dealing with the stresses of heat and disease. To combat those things and to provide good conditions, we will do the following: Check the moisture content of the greens on a daily basis Syringe the greens with water to cool them frequently throughout the day Limit mowing during times of extreme heat Raise the height of cut during times of extreme heat Vent the greens with small solid tines to help keep them dry Limit mowing when the soil is saturated The Green Committee s standard for green speed is 10 feet. During the stressful times, green speed may be reduced slightly so the turf can weather the heat. I ask for your patience and understanding as we deal with the summer conditions. Our goal is to provide everyone with the best conditions the weather will allow. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me. I hope to see you on the course. The field will be limited to the first 32 teams (128 players). For this event you will register as a single or as a twosome. Our goal is to have members break out from their traditional groups and play with other members or new members. The Golf Shop will take care of pairing the twosomes together to make a foursome. Any withdraws after Thursday, June 7 th will result in a charge for the food portion of this event. The Format is Man In The Box. 10 GOLF EVENTS FLAG TOURNAMENT WEDNESDAY, JULY 4 TH This is an event the golf shop runs every year in occasion with the 4th of July Holiday. It is quite different to any other tournament during the season, and it is a most interesting and entertaining one. There are no special tee times assigned or pairings to be made, you just sign up as you would normally for a tee time and play with whomever you wish. In order to retrieve the flags accurately, the last time eligible to participate will be 2:00 p.m. On the 4th of July, when you come out to play, just register in the Golf Shop for a flag for the tournament. The entry fee is $10.00 per person. There are both men's and women's divisions, and the way this event works is all players get par plus (+) their individual handicap. When that number of strokes is reached, they plant their flag in the ground. The flags will be collected later that day, and the player whose flag goes the farthest is the winner. How far will you go??? Get a flag and go the distance - it's fun!!! SOUTHERN PIG PICKIN MEMBER S GUEST DAY THURSDAY, JULY 12 TH (** Hillendale Cup Points event participation only **) Registration will begin on Thursday, June 14th at 8:00 am. At that time a member may call in or personally sign up with one, two, or three guests. Please have your guest s name and club affiliation at the time of registration. The field will be limited to 100 players. If on the first days registration, the event is oversubscribed there will be a lottery drawing for the actual field. Hopefully this will eliminate the "first come first served issue" and give everyone a chance to sign-up on the first day. We will be using the July 1st handicaps for this event. The cost of the event will be $ per player, and will include the following: * Lunch * Golf Carts/Range Balls * Dinner * Prizes * Beer/Soda on Golf Course * Cocktails available by chit MENU Eastern Carolina Style Pulled Pork BBQ Slow Basted Bone In BBQ Chicken Carolina Coleslaw Signature BBQ Twice Baked Beans Loaded Potato Salad Green Bean Casserole Hushpuppies THE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS 11:00 Driving Range opens 1:00 Shotgun Start 6:00 Dinner 7:00 Awards *** New Format *** FOURSOME FORMAT - Stableford Points (Gross and Net) There will be Closest To The Pin for Members and Guests on both Hole #3 and #15 and Long Drive Contest on Hole #9 for both Members and Guests Page 10

We will be starting play on both tees to facilitate the afternoon family obligations. All participants will be paired by blind draw for the first round and by score, (leaders off last), for the second round.
