3 Membership Chair We again welcome over 20 new members to our club during this past month. So please continue to reach out when you see a new face at our meetings and golf outings. Also, it's very important for members to check and be aware of their due date for renewing their Membership. You can check the roster through the national site to see when you are due. You can attend the club s functions including golf until the end of the month that your membership expires. After that you will not be able to register for any golf/events until your membership is current. For those of you that paid for an ASGA badge, I am out of town until mid Sept. So your badges will not be available until the October meeting. Also, if you signed up for a badge and did not bring $5, please do so at the August meeting as I cannot order your badge until it is paid for. So glad all of you joined our fun group! ~Donna Bulthuis Social Committee Report Hello fellow ASGA members. Although our participants have dwindled during the hot summer months, we re happy to report that we ve had some excellent turnouts at our summer events. Happy Hour, at Cody s, 5pm in Brownwood seems to be a good venue for our club. Some members come early and others arrive later, but our meeting place on the back deck seems to be filled with ASGA members well up to 7:30 and later. While the dance floor is rather small, our members do make the most of it and everyone enjoys the music which starts at 6. So if you haven t joined us yet, mark your calendars for our next Happy Hour on August 11th. Just a reminder, you don t have to sign up for Happy Hour and it s always on the 2nd Friday of the month. We look forward to seeing you there. And, if you have friends visiting, they are welcome to join us too. Our meeting on Tuesday, July 25th was a great success. A delicious roasted chicken dinner was supplied by TooJays. This was followed by a short meeting and announcements. Then the fun began. Rick Mitchell entertained us in an evening of Trivia. While we always enjoy eating dinner with our friends, this time we mixed it up afterwards. Following dinner, everyone was handed a table number and the fun began with members trying to find their table. It was a great evening even if you weren t on the winning team. As you know, this season, we have had volunteers serving the food to our members at the meetings. This enables us to serve you in a more orderly, sanitary and timely way so that everyone gets their food when it s still hot. We applaud and thank this month s volunteers, who include: Lois Schwartz, Janet Maloney, Sharon Bohannon, Nilda Dumont, Janet Maloney-Brobst, Elaine Hirschfield, Rosalie Dominguez, Sharon Antonille and Jackie Lewis. One last thing, we enjoy planning the menu and providing a good mix of entertainment and outside activities for you each month and your suggestions are always welcomed. We appreciate those that clear their tables at the end of the evening and thank you for your help, it makes a huge difference. Coming Up Happy Hour - Friday, August 11th, at 5 pm, on the back Cody s in Brownwood Next Meeting - Tuesday, August 6pm at Burnsed Rec Center at Osecola HIlls, outside by the picnic area and around the pool, where there are lots of tables and you can enjoy a swim to cool Treasurer's Report - Income/Expenses - July 2017 ~Ken McGray, ken61mcgray@yahoo.com off, or just splash each other. We will be serving a picnic type of dinner with fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, coleslaw and fresh fruit platter for dessert. Of course, it s always BYOB or drink of choice and pre-dinner snacks, chips or appetizers if you want. Please be mindful and do not bring any glass onto the pool area. We will provide lots of ice. The shuffle board, bocce and pickleball courts have been reserved for our club. However, the pool cannot be reserved so there may be other Villagers enjoying the pool too. If you and your friends like to play cards or you have a board game you d like to play or share, please feel free to bring it along. Seating will be limited, so if you have a folding chair, please bring it with you. REMEMBER, you have to sign up for this event so we know how much food to purchase. Watch for the posting on our ASGA Calendar so you can sign up and pay and the deadline to sign up is Friday, August 18th. Until next month, Your Social Chairs ~Ellie Walsh and Carole Mosbaugh caroleasga14@gmail.com elliewalsh828@gmail.com Upcoming Golf Events GOLF CHAIR Dear All Thanks to all our new and "old" members our golfing excursions seem to be going very well. In these hot and humid summer months I remind everyone how important it is to keep hydrated on the golf course. Drink water constantly-before you are thirsty. Save the margarita for later. And falling in the ponds for relief does not count. In the month of August many of my Fla Cup committee members are traveling and taking it Beginning Balance 7/1/2017 $7, Total Income Jul 2017 $13, Total Expenses Jul 2017 $2, Net Gain/(Loss) Jul 2017 $10, Ending Balance 7/31/2017 $18, ** ** Includes $12, designated for the Florida Cup

You DO NOT have to be on the 12 person Florida Cup team but can play the "fun" shamble/scramble on Saturday and Sunday. It's going to be a great weekend at Mission Inn! I will not be at the August social but in the cool Pacific Northwest until Aug 26. (Lucky me) See ya on the course! ~Pam Gross FLORIDA CUP To All ASGA members, it is time to sign up for this year s FL Cup which we are hosting. We would like the best golfers in the club to represent our team. As long as you have a GHIN # you are eligible. Saturday Championship golf is playing Mission Inn on Aug 19th which is where the FL Cup will be played. If you would like to be on this year s team it is a great opportunity to show how well you can compete on this course. All new members are encouraged to be part of this event. Any questions me at coachzpsu@aol.com or call , thanks John Zabatta PRIORITY GOLF MONDAY Monday priority golf is played on the The Villages 18-hole championship courses. It s essential that you have a priority membership to ensure your participation. Non-priority members can participate, but they must wait until the tee time schedule is out and then put themselves into any open slot that may be available. New members can obtain a booklet, Golfing in The Villages, at the various country club golf shops. In the booklet you will find instructions on how to access the The Villages Automated Tee Time System. Currently the championship courses are undergoing some major maintenance, including aerification of the greens. This is making course selection and tee times a little more challenging than usual. This disruption should last until early September. ~Ken Moreau, krmoreau@mac.com EXECUTIVE GOLF MONDAYS Please join us on Mondays, usually mid-morning, as we play the executive golf courses in The Villages. All are welcome and if you don't have a golf cart-we will pair you with someone who does and walkers are always welcome. We play various types of games, and meet for lunch at a nearby location - the emphasis is on enjoying a day of golf with friends. Please check out the sign-up sheet on the ASGA website to sign up. If you have any questions please feel free to call one of the coordinators, Mary Joy, , mjoy122@yahoo.com or Judy Jackson, , jjmuf549@gmail.com. ~Mary Joy & Judy Jackson NINE & DINE - TUESDAYS Many thanks to Scott Johnston for running the Tuesday Nine and Dine in July while I and a few friends from Nine and Dine were enjoying some cool weather and beautiful countryside in the mountains of North Carolina. I m back now to finish out the summer in the sunshine of Florida. We have had a great turnout for Tuesday evenings and are enjoying the course and food at Palmer Legends. We will be there through September when I will have to scout out another course that will accommodate us. Maybe back to Orange Blossom with an earlier tee time. If you haven t played with us yet please come out and join us. You do not need to be priority to play. Hope to see you. ~Barb Sobel THURSDAY PRIORITY GOLF Thursday 18 hole golf has had fewer golfers for sure this summer. I think earlier tee times, vacations and hot weather have kept many of us away from the golf course. Membership continues to grow and our new members are coming out to play on Thursdays. Thanks to Jack Parker and Scott Johnston for filling in for me while I was up north! Please me at jboyle3003@comcast.net if you have questions about Thursday priority golf. ~Jane Boyle FRIDAY NINE & DINE Our Nine & Dine is rolling along fine, we are getting anywhere from 40 to 50 sign ups each week, and so far no rain outs. We play all Fridays except for the second Friday of each month. Sign up at our website. ~Jack Parker CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF SATURDAYS Summer Saturday golf play in the Villages is coming to an end. November will begin our off-campus rounds. The Saturday golf venue was established to provide our nonpriority members and guests a forum for our favorite Village sport. We play at many of the more beautiful courses in the area. We attempt to keep the driving within an hour s driving distance. If you would like to recommend a course, please me at angelo32035@yahoo.com. ~Dick Ferrera Congratulations to Fred Robinson who aced the 5th hole at Briarwood on July 27, playing with the Thursday Executive group. He used a 7 iron for the 130 yard shot. One of his teammates saw the ball bounce near the pin, but thought it rolled away. When the team got to the green and didn't see his ball, they were disappointed until Fred looked in the cup and there it was. Meet ASGA Member Maralyn Gable Congratulations to Maralyn Gable who got her first hole-in-one on July 13th. She was playing at Citrus Grove on Orange Blossom Championship Course, on the 8th hole. It was 97 yards to the pin, but there was a lot of brush between her and the pin, so she diligently replaced her new red Volvik ball with an old yellow Titleist she had found near the water s edge months ago. Taking her trusted 7 iron, a

5 club she s relied on since she first took up golf, she made a clean swing and hit the ball perfectly. I still can t believe it went in the hole. What a great feeling, she said in relaying the event. Originally from Minnesota, Maralyn grew up in Illinois. Her first love was tennis and she was lucky enough to have a tennis court in her backyard where she played every day (weather permitting). It was her game and she was good at it. She played at local tournaments and when her daughter was a toddler she would take a portable fence with her to keep her daughter safe and everyone would take turns watching her when it was Maralyn s turn to play. Unfortunately, after her second major knee surgery she was told she couldn t play tennis anymore. Instead of feeling defeated by the news, she turned to golf with the same competitive spirit, taking lessons and spending a good amount of time at the driving range improving her swing. Professionally, Maralyn also enjoyed her position as Executive Assistant to the Executive V.P. of SunTrust Bank in the Downtown Tampa Tower for 24 years. In 1998 Maralyn joined the Tampa Chapter of ASGA and started playing in their events. She also went to many National ASGA outof-town events. As membership chair for the Tampa chapter, she watched their chapter s membership grow from 100 to 300 in two years. It was a great way to meet new people and make new friends, she added. And, that s where she heard all the talk about The Villages, how great it was with all the golf courses and activities that were available. Deciding to investigate firsthand, she signed up for a Lifestyle visit with a friend and was instantly charmed by it all. In 2012 Maralyn moved to The Villages and bought a lovely villa in the village of St. James. It has turned out to be a great move for me. I have made many wonderful friends, especially through The Villages ASGA chapter here. She also belongs to several other singles clubs, including a singles dance club. She enjoys playing cards and games, especially Euchre and Mexican Train. She makes it a point to catch every good movie that comes to town, enjoys travel, dining out, reading, concerts, anything music and casinos. Maralyn has a son and a daughter and is the proud grandmother of four grandsons, two of whom are presently serving in the Army Special Forces and have been deployed to Somalia. She also has two greatgrandchildren, and always makes time to go back and visit her family. As a special gift, Maralyn has knitted an afghan for three of her grandsons and presented it to them when they got married. She s presently in the process of knitting an afghan for her fourth grandson, but he is only eight years old, so she has some time for this one. Although it s time consuming, she enjoys it and, more importantly, it s a very special gift, made with love, from her hands and her heart, to each of her grandchildren. While Maralyn still goes back to Tampa to see friends and family, her heart and home is here in The Villages. Not one to sit still too long, when she s not playing golf, or dancing, there s a good chance you ll see her the next time you check in for golf at Bonifay Golf Shop. Maralyn has been happily working there for 2 years and still loves her job, enjoys her co-workers, and greeting fellow villagers when they sign in for golf. You go girl and Congratulations! Golf (And Push) Cart Etiquette lf carts are a primary source of revenue for golf courses, so in most instances when you play in a tournament you will be riding in a golf cart. It s important that you are aware of golf cart rules and etiquette. When you check-in with the golf course staff, they will let you know the basic rules and safely of cart operation. They are designed for golfer safety as well as to protect the golf course turf (teeing ground, fairway and greens). If you are a new golfer, you may feel more comfortable having a more experienced golfer drive the cart. The first and MOST IMPORTANT thing to check before driving a cart is to make sure your golf bag is fastened securely to the cart. You don t want it to fall off and risk being embarrassed. When taking a golf cart, the golf staff will let you know if it is Cart Path Only (no carts allowed on the course at any time - mainly due to wet fairway conditions). If the conditions require Cart Path Only, take several clubs (plus an extra ball in case yours is lost or not playable) to save time from walking back and forth across the fairway and slowing down play. If the course specifies 90 Degrees (drive your cart along the cart path to the spot of your ball and then make a 90 degree turn onto the course and drive to your ball). You want to operate a cart with safety in mind. Limit the use to two passengers - don t try to fit three people in the seat or let someone stand on the back by the golf clubs. Resist the urge to hang legs and feet outside the cart some golfers have suffered broken ankles and legs from hanging legs and feet outside the cart. Operate the cart safely by observing signs directing you to stay on the cart paths or away from protected nature areas. The general rule is to keep 30 yards away from greens, approaches and collars. Many courses will have ropes or signs showing when carts are required to return to paths. Additionally, most courses will ask you to stay on the cart path on par 3 holes. You want to use caution when going up or down hills and avoid sharp turns where the tires could damage the turf. Avoid water puddles, water hazards and of course bunkers. Making sharp turns, coming to an abrupt stop or driving too fast can also damage the turf. Cart use could change during the day, depending on weather conditions and may be restricted following a heavy rain. Many newer carts offer USB outlets to charge a rangefinder or phone. Resist the urge to look at your phone while driving a golf cart the same rules of the road apply to operating a golf cart. It s good cart etiquette to park the cart at the rear of the green or wherever allows you the shortest exit when done putting. Avoid the urge to park with two wheels off the cart path many people leave two wheels on the path and pull off partially into the grass. A good analogy is would you park your car in a driveway with two wheels in the driveway and two wheels in your yard? Then don t do that on the golf course if another cart approaches (maintenance, ranger or beverage cart) they can pull around your cart. If using a push cart, the same rules apply, but of course, don t walk with your cart across the green. (Some courses with sand greens will allow push carts to be taken across the green, but generally you should not do this, unless told by golf course staff that it s allowed.) Some facilities also ask that push carts not get used on the turf between a bunker and green on the collar and approaches. You also want to leave a push cart at the rear of the green as a courtesy to the group behind you as well as to allow for a quick exit. Following these established guidelines for golf cart and push cart use will add to your enjoyment on the golf course.

12 ASGA CARSON CITY CLASSIC October 6th - 8th, 2017 Every year the Sacramento Chapter hosts a weekend golf outing and invites the rest of the country to come out and enjoy some great golf with us. After a successful trip to Monterey last year, we are once again headed to the high country in Carson City for this year s outing. This is a location that most of the members of western chapters of ASGA can get to easily. Carson City is home of The Devine Nine, and is located 30 minutes south of the Reno-Tahoe Airport. This year it is the Devine 10, as a private club has joined the group on certain occasions and we are happy to include it in our event. STANDARD PACKAGE We have scheduled golf on Friday, October 6 th (tee times start at noon) and Saturday October 7 th with a shotgun start at 9:30 AM. We also have a bonus round on Sunday October 8 th. Golf is scheduled for Eagle Valley (West Course) on Friday and semi-private Toiyabe Country Club on Saturday. The bonus round will be at Dayton Valley on Sunday. All are beautiful layouts that have been used at least one time as qualifiers for large events. We have a two night, two golf day package with a dinner on Saturday night plus breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday. The standard package includes two nights lodging, Friday and Saturday golf, two breakfasts and Saturday dinner. We have both single and double occupancy available and have either a standard room or a junior suite available. We will be staying at the Gold Dust Resort Hotel and Casino. The rates are as follow: Standard package: Standard Room: Dble Occ: $254 per player Sngl Occ: $338 per player Junior Suite: Dble Occ. $265/per.player Single Occ. $360/per.player (double queens or king available) ADDITIONAL GOLF If you want to play a 3 rd round of golf, on Sunday, the bonus round at Dayton Valley, is an additional $60. ADDITIONAL NIGHTS If you want to come in on Thursday, rooms are available at $77.70 for the standard room and $88.80 for the junior suite. This is a per room fee so double occupancy would be half that rate per person. Additional nights stays are available through Gold Dust West. DEADLINE for payment and registration is September 10 th, Rooms may be limited, so don t wait too long if you are interested in attending this event. NO refunds will be forthcoming after September 20 th, as our payment to the hotel/courses is due on that date!! At this time we are also contemplating a bowling tournament on Friday evening as Gold Dust West has their own bowling lanes. Any questions, please Dwight Pattison at Dwight@Pattisonappraisals.com or call at Monday thru Friday, 8-5 Pacific Time.
