2 Message from the President Clay Meininger, PGA, TCC President & COO Thank you for all the positive comments about the resort pool it truly is a destination for our members. It has been fun to watch cars in the driveway stop and take it all in or drive slowly as the water features are in motion. Wait until you see it in the evenings, the LED multicolor lights make the pool come alive as do the laminars in the half moon. Along with the pool lights, the tornado shade structures are illuminated with LED multi-color lights as well. We have received numerous membership inquiries from several of our member s friends. While the Club has 11 different membership plans, I would like to highlight a few. Sports/Social Memberships include the Resort Pool, Tennis, Food and Beverage, Health & Wellness and Group Exercise when they come on line. We look forward to welcoming your friends to TCC! Message from the Chef Shawn Hartwig, Executive Chef June is here, so comes the heat of summer! And we have the same questions just like we did last year...what do we do to beat this heat? The first answer is take a vacation to Norway or Denmark where the temperature only gets to 80 degrees in the summer. Only problem with that is both countries are pretty expensive compared to Topeka, so I think the second answer you thought of is probably the right one, come check out our new pool. The menu this year has new surprises with old favorites and fantastic Mai Tais and scratch Margaritas that will help cool you down. Plus, we have a great staff ready to take care of you and your guests. Swimming not your thing? Then come and enjoy our features for June, Say Cheeeese! We will be importing Cheeses from all around the world for our specials this month. Corn Crusted Cheese Curd Street Tacos, Our World Famous Apple Manchego Salad with Black Berries (If you don t know why it s world famous, try it and you will). My favorite is our Worldly Grilled Ham & Cheese with Sheep s Milk Cheese from Green Dirt Farms in Missouri, Smoked Ham from Illinois, and Green Thunder from England all on Marble Rye from Chicago. Aged Provolone Stuffed Kobe Beef Yakitori (Grilled and Skewered is what yakitori means) over Udon Noodles with stir fried Vegetables and Savory Teriyaki and Toasted Sesame Oil. And finally, I have the greatest Cheese in the world from Burgundy, France called Delice de Bourgogne. I m putting this into Puffy Pastry with Sautéed Mushrooms and Truffle Oil to make a fabulous Mushroom and Brie Wellington served with Romesco, Spinach and toasted Almonds with your choice of a Filet, Salmon or Chicken. If you like Cheese or just don t like the heat we have your summer problems solved. I love my Dad. He really is one of my best friends and heroes, so in honor of him every year for our Father s Day Brunch I ask myself what would Fritz like? Fritz is my Dad, by the way. He is from Minnesota, so he is a meat and potatoes guy. So we will be carving Turducken (That s a Chicken stuffed inside a Duck stuffed inside a Turkey). Three meats for the price of one. Smoked Prime Rib, Angus Chili with all the fixings, Sausage Benedict, Deviled Eggs, and his favorite Peanut Butter Pancakes. That is just a few of the items we will be serving that day, but if you are the Dad or just have a great one like me, come see us on the 17th for a great Father s Day Brunch. For our cooking class on the 20th I will be presenting Farm to Table. The What? How? Whys? And Where? Should be an enlightening class that may involve a glass of wine or two. 2 Chairman s Membership Challenge At the beginning of 2018, a goal was set to add 45 new members to our TCC family! 3 Golf News Levi Lambing, PGA, Head Golf Professional 2018 TCC JuniOR Golf PROGRam InformatiON kicks off on June 6th, with clinic times by assigned age groups. Price per child is $200 for members. Ages 5-9 from 8:00-8:50 a.m. Ages from 9:00-9:50 a.m. Ages 13+ from 10:00-10:50 a.m. Course Play will take place on Fridays throughout June & July. If you have questions regarding or wish to register a child by phone, please call the Golf Shop at (785) Adult Golf Clinics 2018 Adult Golf Clinics will run from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on select Thursdays throughout the summer and will consist of teaching and drills provided by your golf professionals. Course play will be implemented to give participants insight on golf course management and situations. Please call the Golf Shop to register for clinic dates on June 7th & 28th. Cost for each clinic is $20. Bragging Rights Something new to help spread to cheer for great shots, low rounds, and firsts for our members. Please submit any info you find worth bragging about. Could be about you, your spouse, kids, or fellow members! First bragging right of the year goes out to Parker Beal for winning the City League Tournament! Parker fired a 27-hole score of 112 to take home the medalist position. Way to go Parker! Most recently they took first in the Boy s 6A Regional held here at our wonderful club. Our very own Reid Hughes, Max Neale, and Parker Beal helped lead the team to State! Well, Mother Nature must have completely forgotten to send us Spring! We moved right into Summer weather in May and it looks like it s going to be a hot one this year! Remember we change to meeting on Tuesday s at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start immediately following. Blustery conditions challenged our Edna Petro Putting Tournament contestants, but the strong survived! Congratulations to our Champion, Marsha Mechtley. Janet Frieden was the Medalist, Jacki Summerson was Runner-up and Cindy Cooper and Sarah Oliverius were Semi-Finalists. Thanks to Susan Farley for organizing this fun event! We hosted Manhattan Country Club for our traveling trophy, the Capital Apple. The course was in beautiful shape and the weather was perfect. The event was a two-person handicap match play which the TCC ladies won! Yay team! Look for the event next year, which MCC will host, and sign up early. Our Tuesday evenings Women s Golf clinics, (during the month of May) have been a great success! The clinics focused on putting, short game shots, longer iron play and drivers. The ladies who were able to attend learned a lot and were able to put their practice to the test in the Diamonds in the Rough Guest Day 9 Hole Scramble. Thank you to Marsha Mechtley for organizing the tournament and to Levi Lambing, our Head Golf Professional for the instruction and encouragement during the sessions! Invite a guest to play in our Circle of Friends Guest Day Tournament, June 7th at After a round of golf, a luncheon follows. Jacki Summerson is the person to contact with any questions or help getting signed up. June 14th is the date for our POD Play Tournament, which is a one-day, 18-hole, handicapped Match Play competition. Sign up early. Our premiere event of the year, Divot Divas Member/Guest Tournament begins June 24-26th. Deadline to enter is June 12 or when the field is full. At the time of this writing, there is still room for a few more teams. The theme is super cute this year and the committee is working on special tee gifts, decorations and awards. 5 Tennis News Junior Brown, USPTA, Director of Tennis Pickleball Strategy Tip One of the most important things in order to be a good pickleball player is the ability to keep your shots low! Now to do this effectively, you must learn the ability to control the speed and height of your shots from various areas of the court. There s only one way to make that happen. Sign up now at the Tennis Center or by calling (785) Golf Course News Kent Morgison, GCSAA, Golf Course Superintendent June is always a busy month for the maintenance department and others here at the club. We kickoff the month with the our mens Member Guest, the Divot Derby, and end it with Divot Divas, the ladies version of the same. In between we host several events including one of the qualifiers for the prestigious Kansas Amateur. Topeka Country Club has always been thought of as a great venue for top quality golf, and we take great pride in showcasing your course to all of the guests that are set to play in these three events in particular. As for things going on in the department, Steve Sidebottom has been busy with the annual spring plantings around the Club. This is a huge task that he handles predominately himself, but the array of colorful ornamentals throughout the club provide a nice backdrop for our members and guests no matter how they use the Club. The renovation of the pool also has given us a great opportunity to provide a new, fresh landscape surrounding it and will give us a nice addition to the other beds throughout the facility. As I have stated in previous months, the bermuda treatments that we made last fall, coupled with a brutal winter for survival, have paid dividends as we have witnessed a great reduction in the amount of bermuda as it pertains to the fairways especially. Unfortunately, the winter also took a toll on some zoysia in these treated areas. While we understand that this has left a less than desirable look in certain areas, we are confident that the long-term prognosis will leave us with a healthier stand of zoysia vs the undesirable bermuda grass.
