2 Message from the President Clay Meininger, PGA, TCC President & COO As summer rolls along, so does construction on the Clubhouse, Golf Shop, Health and Wellness/Group Exercise and Youth Room. As we move into August, much of the work will take place inside, rough-in of ceilings, sheetrock hung and finished. Drop ceilings will be constructed in the Golf Shop, Health & Wellness and Youth Room. Grading and concrete work will take place on the south side of the building. Brickwork will begin on the south side of the building, working its way down the east side of the addition. As Kent and his team battle a hot summer, please keep carts in the fairways, zoysia turf is much more tolerant of cart traffic. Hand watering greens will continue to insure they stay healthy until the temperatures break. As you enjoy the golf course, please remember to stay hydrated. We look forward to seeing you on the links! Chairman s Membership Challenge At the beginning of 2018, a goal was set to add 45 new members to our TCC family! Each month, we will update you as to where we are in reaching this goal! We encourage you to invite your friends, family & co-workers to experience a day at TCC! To set up a tour, please contact Gina or Clay at (785) goal Clubhouse addition construction continues along the east side of the building. Above: Golf Shop roof line beginning to take shape. Right: Health & Wellness/Group Exercise Room floor poured. Message from the Chef Shawn Hartwig, Executive Chef This month I not going to hide it...i m super corny! I tell the same jokes to my wife until she gives me the look and I tell the same stories again and again until she gives me the look. I didn t realize that she gives me so many looks! But I m a corny guy and proud of it. All that is said only to say I love Corn. Corn in season, handled the right way, and cooked simply. Really can t get any better. So, this month I m proud to present to you our Corny features for the month of August. I ve got a Wonderful Bi-Colored Corn and Goat Cheese Quiche served with a Midwest inspired Pannazella Spinach Salad (means Peasant Salad in Italian, means a marinated Crouton Salad in English). Awesome Maryland Crab & Corn Mini Cakes with a refreshing Avocado Relish, Old Bay Spiced Corn and Sweet Corn Cream. Harry Davis, our Master Soup Maker, will be making a Smokey and Sweet Southwestern Corn Chowder with Black Beans, Bell Peppers, Red Onions, Scallion and a Rich Corn Cream. And because Scott Griffith keeps asking when are we going to have another Walleye dish on the menu, we will be presenting Corn Crusted Great Lakes Walleye with Smoked Corn Relish, Watermelon and Scallion Salsa and Feta Cream. Hope everyone enjoys my corny ideas and dishes! If your children enjoy any type of Asian cooking, I invite your whole family out to watch your kids get a hands-on cooking experience at our Kid s Cooking Class. They will learn how to make Egg Drop Soup, Scallion Pancakes, Chicken Lo Mein, and Green Tea Cheesecake on August 2nd. Best part of making it? You get to eat it! For our big kids (some people call them Adults) on August 15th, I will be teaching everyone what to do with that left over half bottle of wine. Okay, only 1 glass left? Cook with it! Join us at our Cooking Class and see what all the fun is about! And lastly for the month, we will have a fun Wine Wednesday event on Wednesday, August 22, where everyone is invited to come try 5 different wines with 5 different bites. Think drinks and apps while you walk around. Always a fun summertime break from the heat! 2
3 Golf News Levi Lambing, PGA, Head Golf Professional Golf Shop News Did someone forget to turn their heater off? I thought moving north from Oklahoma meant cooler weather.. hasn t been the case! We are currently unpacking some new PRG head covers that look AWESOME!! Stop by and check them out. Also a fresh shipment of hats is due to arrive any day. We will have many different color schemes to choose from! Please be aware of your shots on the driving range. For the safety of you and your fellow members, when practicing from the front of the driving range tee we ask you limit your shots to no further than 230 yards. Bragging Rights Congratulations to Ken Schmanke on his FIRST career Hole-In-One. Ken hit a 3-Hybrid 219 yards into the hole on #13. Witnessing this fantastic shot was Jeff Dishman and Brian Wilson. Way to go Ken! Women s Golf Association Beth Kuckelman, Chairwoman Golf, golf and more golf! The summer months are flying by and we are enjoying lots of fun days on the golf course! Did you know that our ladies group also meets on Thursday mornings? This is a very casual group, we just show up around and pair off with whoever is there. If you are unsure about playing in the Tuesday morning league, this is a great time to come out and play. You don t have to keep score, you can pick up your ball at any time if you are not turning in a score and you can play as many or as few holes as you want. I can guarantee you that no one cares if you shoot over or under everyone is thinking about their own game and are just glad to have company on the course. Join us! We hosted our annual guest tournament, Divot Divas the end of June and had an awesome time! We were treated to the golf course being in great shape, wonderful food (especially our fried chicken lunch, which we are becoming famous for!), perfect attention from our pro shop staff and for the lucky winners, wine carafes and wine glasses with the TCC emblem etched on them. Many thanks to Michele Falley and her hard working committee! A lot of time and effort goes into this tournament and it s a great chance to showcase all that we enjoy at our club. See winners on page 7. As I write this article we are preparing for our Club Championship. Susan Farley, Tournament Chair and Vicki Conroy, Co-chair are setting the pairings and tee times. Good luck to everyone playing in this two-day, Gross and Net tournament! We hosted Cypress Ridge in our City Team Play in July and had a great group of ladies playing. Our team play captain, Vicki Conroy reports that we are doing well in the standings with one more tournament to go. We will be hosting our final match on August 3rd against Western Hills. Wish us luck! We will be playing at Cypress Ridge on September 8th for our team play closing day scramble. Keep hitting them long and straight! 3 Next on the Tee Please call the Golf Shop at (785) to register today! 5 Tennis News Junior Brown, USPTA, Director of Tennis This has been a very busy summer season and we have new programs starting all the time. The summer starts and ends oh so quickly but always leaves us with many memories, moments and great results. Our tournament kids have represented us so well and exemplified both great skill but also great sportsmanship. Whether you are an adult or kid, young or old, a beginner or a nationally ranked player, TCC has definitely become the premier place to train! Remember the fall tennis program begins August 20th and any time is a great time to get started! If you have not signed up for the fall session of clinics please contact the Tennis Shop at (785) New classes and divisions have been added as well as many flexible times, so one is sure to fit your schedule. We can even set other groups and times if needed. Just let us know how we can help you maximize your child s potential. Offering clinics for all levels ages Wine-n-Pickle Friday, August 24 starting at 6:00 p.m. Come out, bring a friend and enjoy a fun and entertaining evening of pickleball and a few drinks to go with it! Come out at 6:00 p.m. to mingle. Play starts at 6:30 and concludes at 8:00 p.m. KID S FRIDAY FUN NIGHT Friday, August 31 from Hey kids, join us August 31st for games, activities, tons of FUN & food. Check in is at 5:30 p.m., pick up at 9:00 p.m. $30 per child. Bring a friend. Sign up by calling the Tennis Center at (785) Golf Course News Kent Morgison, GCSAA, Golf Course Superintendent I believe it was Glenn Frey that coined the song The Heat is On. He must have been predicting the year 2018 in Topeka, Kansas when he wrote the tune, as it is on and U.S. has Drought been for an Monitor extended period here as we head into August. Unfortunately, as the heat Kansas has been ramped up, the rain bucket has been empty for the most part. As I am in the process of writing this article, Topeka is over 7 short on rainfall for the year, and is considered in a Severe Drought according to the National Weather Service. As you can imagine, the combination of these two factors has taken its toll on our cool season turf around the facility. While our roughs are currently struggling, the fairways and tees are enjoying the hot weather. Zoysia, being a warm season turfgrass, generally does well in times of high heat, therefore it has become the most popular turfgrass for fairways here in the transition zone. While our irrigation system does a decent job of keeping up with watering requirements to maintain vigorous growth of zoysiagrass, nothing beats timely rainfall to even out all of your imperfections. Until we break this cycle and get into periods of adequate moisture, you may notice some edges of fairways that are drier than in other areas. This is expected here at TCC, as the numerous trees that line the edges of fairways here at the Club are constantly robbing our turf of water and nutrients that allow it to thrive. We are always monitoring this and work on keeping enough moisture in the ground for the turf to survive and will bounce back quickly once some wet weather arrives. Lastly, you have certainly noticed the hitting bay at the back of the range is basically complete. Along with this construction, we are in the process of rebuilding and relocating the blue tee on #12. Once completed, this new tee should add about yards to the length of the hole for you long ball hitters. Other teeing grounds are being evaluated, both back and forward, so that we can continue to improve an already great facility here at TCC. As always, if you have any concerns you d like to discuss, feel free to flag me down on the course, as long as your question is accompanied by cooler weather and a thunderstorm or two. 5 Many of our tiny tots after their fun-filled class!!!
