2 Message from the President Clay Meininger, PGA, TCC President & COO As I write my July article, the resort pool has been open a total of 21 days, and what a three-week span that has been. Over 1,700 members, children and their guests have enjoyed relaxing in the crystal clear water. We have seen young and seasoned alike enjoy the interactive water features, members who have never been in any of the prior TCC pools enjoying this one. The comments the staff and I have heard from members thus far include The pool far exceeded our expectations way to go, This is why we joined TCC and Love the new resort-style pool!!! So relaxing and the kids always have a blast!! Thank you for your support as TCC continues to improve/ expand our offerings for the membership. I d like to thank Stan and Jane Metzger for loaning Stan s beautiful artwork hanging in the Terrace, Heritage and Living Rooms. If you have not had the chance to view the paintings, it is worth a trip to the Club. July brings the best fireworks show to TCC. I have seen several in my many stops around the country and TCC s is by far the biggest and best. You won t want to miss this year s show, but first start your day playing in the Annual Couple s Golf Tournament followed by lunch. Then head to the pool to relax to the music of Dr. Tunes followed by our BBQ buffet prior to the fireworks. It s going to be a great day we ll see you at your Club! Message from the Chef Shawn Hartwig, Executive Chef I think here in Kansas we bleed red, white, and blue more so than any other place I lived before. This month, we will show our pride. To me, July is all about the 4th. It reminds me of waving sparklers next to a bonfire, making s mores, watching my dad light off fireworks for the neighborhood. I can remember listening to music all day not knowing all the songs but still trying to sing along. My mom would always make a huge dinner and set it out on picnic tables for everyone to grab what they wanted before getting a seat to watch the show (my favorite was the corn on the cob dipped in butter). My dad would man the grill for lunch with hot dogs and burgers, anything fast so we could jump back into the water and enjoy the weather. Well for the 4th here at TCC, we are doing what I did every summer with my family, just kicked up a couple of notches! Music and lunch by the pool in the morning and afternoon...we will have Burgers and Hot Dogs, but a couple more options like Chicken Kabobs, Cookies, Potato Salad and Baked Beans. Dinner will feature a whole spread with Smoked Ribs, Beef Brisket, Smoked Chicken, Pulled Chicken, Cheesy Potatoes, Corn Casserole, Fried Okra, Cole Slaw, Fruit, and Salad Bar. After dinner we will then have our big fireworks show. Music goes with the display and is just a great time for everyone. I m lucky enough that a couple of months ago I took my wife on our second honeymoon to Europe, the first one we both got really sick and pretty much just tried to heal before we got home. This trip was all about 1. being healthy and 2. eating. And I will be happy to relive the food and drinks from Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg and France on July 18th at our Cooking Class. So if you want to explore what it is like on a European river cruise, please join me for wonderful afternoon. For our July Limited Edition Features, I m trying something different, special, and above all, delicious. Coho Salmon is a Wild Pacific Salmon that swims from Baja California to Alaska every year, they are known as Silver Salmon, but better known for how tasty there are. I will be preparing them four different ways, we will still have our Great Atlantic Salmon from Canadian we use all year round, but for this month while they can be caught wild from Alaska, we have Coho. Anise rubbed Coho Smoked Salmon Rillette. This is my version of a French classic, think Smoked Salmon Spread atop grilled Chef s Bread with Radishes, Avocado and Chives. Light and delicious. I m going to rub some Coho with a Caraway Scented spice blend and then roast it and serve it over Germany Potato Salad with Arugula. We will cedar plank some Coho and then finish it on the grill with Smoked Tomato Couscous, with grilled Asparagus, and charred Heirloom Tomatoes; it is simple and perfectly balanced. And lastly Bangkok-style, where we ve candied the Coho in Sugar and serve it with Stir Fried Vegetables and finish it with a warm Cilantro and Orange Vinaigrette. All delicious, just like July is supposed to be! 2 Chairman s Membership Challenge At the beginning of 2018, a goal was set to add 45 new members to our TCC family! Each month, we will update you as to where we are in reaching this goal! We encourage you to invite your friends, family & co-workers to experience a day at TCC! To set up a tour, please contact Gina or Clay at (785) goal 45 23

As the weather gets hotter, be prepared by pre-hydrating before your round, take plenty of water with you on the course and make sure you re-hydrate after your round. You might look into an electrolyte replacement if you tend to sweat a lot. This can be Gatorade or a powdered product to mix in your water or it s available in pill form. If you start feeling bad during your round, get in the shade and if you don t start feeling better, head for the clubhouse. A round of golf is not worth having heat exhaustion! Luckily, at TCC, there are PLENTY of trees, offering shade all along the course, so it s easy to stay comfortable regardless of the temperature! June was the month to see lots of old friends and make new ones! Our annual Circle of Friends guest day was June 7th. Sign up by calling the Tennis Center at (785) Golf Course News Kent Morgison, GCSAA, Golf Course Superintendent The generally overused term of the crazy Kansas weather has certainly had merit as we are halfway through One of the coolest April s on record was followed by an extremely warm month of May, and as I am writing this we are in the midst of a flat out HOT and DRY June. This weather pattern has made for an extremely challenging season thus far as we seemed to skip right over spring and into the dead of summer, and the turf on the facility didn t really have time to go through it s normal routine of growth. As has been said in previous months, we did endure some winter injury to some of the zoysia on the course, and a lot of the bermudagrass was affected in a major way. While we are seeing recovery in these areas, it never seems to happen quite quickly enough, but there are several Cart damage on stressed rough on #3. months of optimal growing conditions ahead of us that should suit us well going forward. As for the cool season roughs, the high heat and humidity is less than ideal, and we are seeing stressed areas already with a couple of tough months to come. There are ways that you, the golfer, can help us in keeping our roughs as healthy as possible. Traffic is the number one detriment to cool season turf in the heat of the summer here in Kansas, and on a golf course, carts running over stressing turf can be fatal. While we do not have a No Carts in Rough policy here at TCC as of now, like many courses in the KC Metro have, we would ask that you limit your traffic in these areas to help them remain as healthy as possible. Also, utilizing the ENTER/EXIT posts have shown to be an effective tool here at TCC, as we are not seeing as much wear as in the past in the areas along fairways. While July, along with August are frequently tough months to endure, the days do begin to get shorter later in the month and fall will be here before we know it. We will do our best, along with a little help, to keep our turf as healthy as possible through these times. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to wave me down on the course. 5 Rachel Osborn attempts to cross the sand pit in this year s Warrior Dash.
