During his visit, Watson will meet with members and junior golfers. Monday, May 1st marked the 50th anniversary of the famous Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson exhibition at The Topeka Country Club. It was on May 1st, 1967 in front of 2,500 spectators that a then 27-year-old Nicklaus first met the 17-year-old Missouri Men s Amateur Champion by the name of Tom Watson. Over the next several decades, the two golf legends would duel in multiple major championships, winning 26 majors and 112 PGA TOUR events between them. Nicklaus and Watson were joined in the exhibition by Bill McDonald, a Washburn University senior who had won the Nation Public Links Golf Championship in 1964, and Jean Ashley-Crawford winner of the US Women s Amateur Championship in According to club records Nicklaus and Watson both carded rounds of 74. Bill McDonald will also be joining us for the event! The event is for Topeka Country Club members and their guests. 2 Message from the President Clay Meininger, TCC President & COO June is just around the corner and with that comes a full list of activities at the Club. We kick the month off with the Divot Derby our Men s Member guest June 1-3. This year will include a special guest on Friday, June 2. As I wrote last month, May 1 marked the 50th anniversary of Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus meeting for the first time at TCC. Through the efforts of John Peterson, who along with Tom were in the same fraternity at Stanford, Tom Watson will join us Friday, June 2. He will hit the ceremonial first tee shot to begin day two of the Divot Derby. Prior to this event, we will host a ceremony honoring Tom and unveil a bronze plaque to commemorate this historical event. Bill McDonald who also played in the foursome will be on hand as well. And on to the rest of the month. Our Junior Tennis Championships is June 3, the start of is June 7. We have a Craft Class at the Pool on June 9 and Music on the Terrace Patio June 9, 23 and 30. The Topeka Country Club Women s Golf Association plays every Tuesday morning and concludes this month with their annual Ladies Member Guest, Divot Divas this year s theme is Over the Rainbow. I ve even heard there will be a sighting of the Wizard, Tin Man, Scarecrow, Lion and Dorothy, this is sure to be a fun event. Chef Shawn will be hosting his Cooking Class on Wednesday, June 21.The Amazing Egg. This event always fills up fast so make your reservations today. Also during the month of June, be on the lookout for July 1905 dates, we will notify you via 30 days in advance has been a huge success, we have offered this culinary experience 55 times over the last two and a half years all being sold out. Message from the Chef Shawn Hartwig, Executive Chef I ve never been to Argentina, but I m a BIG fan of their food. Did you know Argentina is Latin for silver? If you started digging a hole deep enough in China, you would end up in Argentina. Argentina is the eight largest country in the world; and is home to the world s widest avenue, 9th of July, it has 14 lanes. Why do I mention all these fun facts about Argentina? Because I like their Shrimp. All month we will be having Argentinian Red Shrimp featured in our Limited Edition menu dishes. North South Shrimp and Slaw, which is Korean and Argentinian all on one plate. Citrus Grilled Shrimp, Ginger Plum Sweet and Sour Sauce and Wasabi Cole Slaw. Shrimp and 3 Cheese Ravioli- 3 Cheese Homemade Ravioli topped with Sautéed Argentina Shrimp and Spinach and Roasted Red Pepper, Lemon Cream, and Dill Pesto. Or you can try our Prime TCC Surf and Turf, Prime Kansas Filet with Sautéed Argentinian Shrimp, Roasted Red Pepper and Alma Creamy Monterrey Cheese Mashed Potatoes, Romesco Demi and Broccoli. Isn t learning about other countries fun? If not, it still tastes good. I promise. We are trying something new this month with a TCC Sing Along!!!!!!!! I know, what is this? It s a four course casual dinner with drinks and singing. Our own Stephanie Teagarden of Duo du Jour will be leading us in songs, everyone will have the music, and hopefully everyone won t be too off key. It s new. It s different. And it will be fun! I hope to see you there. I ll be doing a wonderfully fun Cooking Class on the 21st all about the Amazing Egg...the How s, What s and Why s. I love my Dad. His name is Fritz. He is my biggest hero and in his honor, I will be putting together a very Fritzy Father s Day Brunch on the 18th. Egg s Benedict is his favorite, so it will be there. He Loves Prime Rib and Smoking Meats, so Smoked Prime Rib, done. He loves a good Deviled Egg. You got it! We ll have Mustard and Chive. We are from Minnesota, and there is nothing better on a cold day than Chili. So yes, we will have Chili with all the fixings. He is a great fisherman and we have done many a shore lunch, so guess what? We will be having it on the brunch. Lastly he is a donut man, so just for your day, we will have your favorite Glazed Donuts. I promise we will have many more items to offer, but these are just a few inspired by my dad. Thank you Dad. 3 Golf News Cory Proehl, Head Golf Professional 2017 TCC Program We hope golf is the first activity scheduled for your children and grandchildren in kicks off on June 7, with clinic times by assigned age groups. Price per child is $150 for members and $250 for non-members. Ages 5-9 from 8:00-8:50 a.m. Ages from 9:00-9:50 a.m. Ages 13+ from 10:00-10:50 a.m. Course play will take place on Fridays throughout June & July. If you have questions regarding or wish to register a child by phone, please call the Golf Shop at (785) Adult Golf Clinics 2017 Adult Golf Clinics will run from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on select Thursdays throughout the summer and will consist of teaching and drills provided by one or more of the golf professionals. Course play may be implemented to give participants insight on golf course management and situations. Please call the Golf Shop to register for the following clinic dates in June 8 and 29. Cost for each clinic is $20. Women s Golf Association Susie Atha, Chairwoman May was a busy month with our golf season getting into full swing. The course held up very well, even with all the rain we had early in the month. It was great to finally get on the course and enjoy time with our friends. We were concerned how the weather would effect our first tournament of the season. Although the temperature was a bit cool, thankfully the rain left our area and our Enda B. Petro Putting Tournament went off without a hitch on May 4. Thanks to Jani Amrein and Susan Farley for organizing this event. Congratulations to: Medalist - Michele Falley; Champion - Sally Boley; Runner Up - Marge Schepker; Semi Finalists - Marsha Mechtley and Sarah Oliverius Our Tuesday evenings Women s Golf Clinics (during the month of May) have been a great learning experience! A special thank you goes out to the all the ladies that took advantage of these sessions. Learning and refreshing our golf skills is something we all need to do from time to time. A special thanks goes out to Marsha Mechtley for organizing the clinics. And, a special thank you also goes out to Cory Prohel, our Head Golf Professional, for the instruction and encouragement during our sessions! June will also be a busy month. Remember to sign up in the Ladies Locker room for our Guest Day, CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, on June 9th. We also have our biggest member/guest event of the year this month. 14TH Annual Divot Divas theme is OVER THE RAINBOW, taking place June Michele Falley and her committee are hard at work getting an exciting tournament lined up for us. 5 Tennis News Junior Brown, Director of Tennis DOUBLES STRATEGY TIP Cross court vs down the line groundstrokes! What should you do? Okay, so by far the majority of your shots should be hit cross court for multiple reasons. There s more room to work with, the net is lower in the middle than on the sides, gives your partner at the net a chance to get involved plus many more. However if you see any of the following situations occur then it is your job as a good doubles player to take advantage of them! If the person at the net is clearly NOT covering the line, if the person at the net is clearly NOT the stronger player or at least not very good at volleying or if you feel like you can attack the ball well enough that they don t have much of a chance to hit a good shot back over then. In any of those last situations make sure you take advantage of it and hit your shot down the line! Keep in mind in a match you are always learning and always adjusting so if something isn t working then change it up! Good Luck and we ll see you on the courts! (785) June 5-August 11 We have finally settled into more of a spring type weather pattern as May wraps up and June approaches. The turf has awakened and things are shaping up nicely as we prepare for both the Divot Derby in early June, as well as the Divot Divas tourney later in the month. We always strive to put our best foot forward on a daily basis, but both of these tournaments get our full attention as you look to entertain your favorite guests. We hope you all enjoy these great events. Steve Sidebottom has been quite busy getting the annual plantings in, and the color of the ornamentals always adds a nice touch to the facility. The front of the Club beds look great, and others throughout the course will be taking on a nice look in the very near future. The myriad of colors you see has been mostly grown on site throughout the winter and early spring, and now you get to enjoy the benefits of this tedious task. Feel free to stop Steve and relay your appreciation for his work on this. Due to the wet weather in April and early May, we are a little behind on our tee box renovations on holes 1,8 and 9. We hope to get the tees on 1 and 9 sodded very soon, and the tees on #8 should be open by the Divot Derby. We believe these tees will be a nice addition to the course, and we look forward to getting them open as soon as possible. That is all for now in maintenance, we are excited to host you and your friends this month for two of our signature events. 5
