On another note our Official Dressage Day is fast approaching, Diana is working out the helpers roster so if there is a job that you prefer to do please call Diana on We will be setting up the four arenas on the Friday morning so for those that are lucky enough not to be working (or in this case maybe not so lucky!) we will be starting at 9.00 so please come down and lend a hand. I have made tentative enquiries about our club having a weekend away at the homestead and following is the information for your interest:- Human Accommodation Horse Accommdation - 2 x 3 bedroom cottages (2 x Queen, 4 x singles) in each cottage. This would mean a few people will have to share a Queen size bed, but I m sure some of our younger members wouldn t mind? Maximum 16 people - BYO Bedding - Both cottages have full kitchenettes and are joined by a common BBQ undercover area. There is also a SPA we can use after a long day in the saddle!! - There are a few options for the horses. They can accommodate a few single paddocks for horses that cannot share and there is also a couple of Jenny Craig paddocks which could be used for single horses. There are also 3 share paddocks which 3-4 horses could use, therefore depending on what criteria the majority of our member s request, will depend on how many people / horses can attend. - There is a 40 x 20m fenced arena for those of you who want to do some flat work or maybe you have a fresh horse who may need some working down before the trail ride! 5 Member Profiles Name: Meegan Linskens Well I am 26 yrs old. My horses live on our family property in flowerdale and I have 4 horses and 3 donkeys :-). I am a finance manager with our family business and I run horse Agistment and my husband and I have started our own excavation business called S & M Notley Excavations Horse s Name: Jenson and his comp name is Belmak Breeze Biggest Achievement on current horse: Winning the 2013 Yea Elmore dressage Jackpot last month for the Sat. Goal on current horse for 2013: To point up to level 3 and have nice calm tests and achieve some personal bests in show jumping. I may even work up the courage to do a x-country competition :-) Favourite discipline: Used to be show jumping but on Jenson it is dressage Horse likes: My horse LOVES FOOD could be anything. I was sitting in his paddock eating a sausage in breed and I turned my head for ONE second and my sausage was gone :-0 Jenson had decided it looked yum. He also loves his molasses and electrolyte water after he has finished a workout :-) Horse dislikes: Lengthened strides (as we found out at our test and talk day :-) and he doesn t like random things popping there head out of the grass whilst I am riding him :-) Horse s funniest habit: His funniest habit is when I kiss him or scratch his bum he turns his head and his lips flop open and you could put your whole hand in those lips hahaha. He also does tricks like bend down to bow for a carrot ( that always impresses the kids ) First horse: My first horse was my old 30 yr old standy star he is still with my today and I got him when I was 19. He is the love of my life and I have his portrait tattooed on my shoulder. He is a survivor. Him and Jenson and my donkey survived the black sat bush fires but 9 of my other horses were not so lucky. But star led the pack to the dam and to safety. He is my angel. Funniest horsey moment: Would of had to have been riding my horse bear (died black sat) and we were having a show jumping lesson. We went over the jump I lost my stirrup, fell but landed directly into the praying position :-) I must have been praying my knees wouldn t break off :-). And anyone who knows me knows I don t pray so needless to say instructor and other riders were laughing ALOT. Biggest horsey achievement: My biggest horse achievement has been on Jenson and that was the dressage jackpot this yr and winning it :-) and I also won the bev Mumford memorial award. Very proud of my fella Jenson we have both come a long way and had many ups and downs. But we re starting to get there. Name: Leonie Kirkwood I work as a Strategic Planner at the City of Port Phillip in St Kilda where I basically I spend hours writing policy and colouring in maps. Most days I love it. I currently work four days a week. It s supposed to be three days a week (so I can ride on my days off ) but there is too much planning to do. I live in balmy Richmond with my long suffering non-horsey partner, Dave and make the arduous journey to Whittlesea to see my ponies three times a week. Horse s Name: Tipperary Springs Mercury (aka Merc) (I always wanted a horse with a double banger name I ve gone one better triple banger!) His vital statistics are: 15.3hh. Grey clydie tb x. 12 years old and pretty cute especially that come hither forelock of his! Oh and he s a Sagittarius. Biggest Achievement on current horse: Buying Merc (I am very indecisive but am glad I did). Lots of little things eg opening gates when 12 months I could barely get him to line up next to one. Cantering his big Clydie canter scared the pants off me the first time! Goal on current horse for 2013: Sounds cliché but just to enjoy riding him and having fun. Trying lots of different things eg clicker training, bareback, handy mount. Also jumping Merc is a great jumper (think he evented to prelim?) for me it s a growth area. Favourite discipline: Probably dressage as its not as terrifying as showing or jumping through Merc shows a flair for giant horse soccer. He loves it! Horse likes: Giant horse soccer and anything I am eating at the time (especially sesame snaps). Horse dislikes: Am yet to really find much he dislikes. Main thing is his occasionally tense and inconsistent rider but he s a pretty laid back horse. Horse s funniest habit: The pelican lip! Merc has a tendency, when tired / sleeping, to drop his bottom lip. You could store stuff in there. First horse: Cruze. I came riding very late and only bought my first horse, Cruze about 6 years ago. I have still have the red terror. He s 20 something and is luxuriating in his paddock, retired because of arthritis. Still full of life and I m amazed sometimes at how insync we still are despite not riding him now he knows my growl, goes back on command and can side pass over a pole like a 5 year old though he wonders why. Funniest horsey moment: Many years ago, riding through the Bunnings car park in Mornington with my friend Jo, we contemplated pulling up to the sausage sizzle. We siddled towards it but were thwarted at the last minute as we didn t have any money on us. A wallet is just something I don t carry in my joddies. It would have been comedy gold if we had pulled up next to the barbie. Biggest horsey achievement: Deciding to learn to ride at age 30. Think it was a mid-life crisis cos I started to learn to ski that same year. More recently, cantering Merc bareback for the first time. Sounds soppy (unhinged?) but I cried.

6 March Rally Report by Leanne 21 riders attended the March rally at the club grounds on 17/3/13. Rain the night before & drizzle & freezing cold wind that morning had a few wondering if they were mad to come outside & ride! The original 9 lessons over 4 session times reduced to 8 lessons as a few riders pulled out & others swapped around. The pre-bookings for lessons seems popular although the final riding times sheet looked nothing like the pre rally one! 9am saw Sarah, Leonie G, Simone & Meegan on the sand for a flat lesson with Brya. Next to them on the sand Anne took Fran, Adele & Brooke for a flat lesson with various exercises. While those of us spectating on the side in the freezing wind rugged up more. At 10am Brya took Sam, Lauren, Gayanne & Carolyn for flat while Anne had (from what I hear) her regular trio of Pat, Tenille & Leonie K. Then it was all hands helping set up jumps for Annes showjumping lessons although she kindly asked for blocks & poles so no wings were needed just yet. Gayanne, Brooke & Meegan jumped Annes interesting circular exercise showing some great rhythm. While Chris, Julie Belinda & Sally had a flat lesson with Brya. The final session of the day saw Belinda, Julie, Tenille & Leonie enjoying an Intro to jumping lesson with Brya. Annes final lesson had Simone & Martina in great style over the same circular exercise as the previous group. It was great to see so many brave the conditions for another great rally. Unfortunately there aren t any/many photos as our intrepid photographer declared it was too cold to take her hands out of her pockets to hold the camera!! Most members sat down and had a chat before or after their session and it was great to catch up with everyone. We have the drinks, snacks, chairs, coffee. Now just need some shade next to the sand arena!! Official CT Day Report by Sarah There was already a report in the last newsletter about the CT day, but I just had to put in the report that Sarah Powell wrote for Chaff Chat for those of you that don t subscribe! - Sam The legendary horseman Tom Roberts once wrote A very windy day is a lost day with a young horse, you will find it very difficult to hold his attention. My own 8yo is more trusty steed than young horse these days, but I still find myself crossing my fingers for calm weather in the week leading up to competition. How on earth would I remember a dressage test if it was windy? My mind is such a muddle on competition days as it is! We experienced typically crazy Victorian weather in the week leading up to our Combined Training day held on the 3rd March. Extreme heat, much needed rain, cold, wind, thunder, lightning! I didn t hold high hopes for this comp. But on the day itself we were actually blessed with fabulous weather. And what a mood it set for a fantastic day too. All levels were very well subscribed, with competitors keen to get in an extra practice the week before TTT. There were some lovely combinations at all levels. In fact I didn t really see any upset horses all day! They were all pretty chilled out in the fantastic weather. We are very lucky at Whittlesea Adult Riders. Our grounds are not very extensive, but many years of hard work and fundraising have paid off and we have wonderful facilities and enough room to cater for the busy competitions we hold each year with, importantly, enough room to warm up! And if you have the opportunity to compete at any of our competitions and are fortunate enough to be snapped by our resident photographers at Inspired Equestrian Photography, you will no doubt get a fantastic shot against the spectacular backdrop of the great dividing range. The dressage rings looked fabulous set up on the grass, which was great going underfoot, thanks to the rain we d had earlier that week. The new 2013 Dressage tests rode really well, and with so few competitors pulling the pin everything ran to fantastic time. The jumping took place on the relatively new surface of our sand arena. Jenny Muir designed an inviting course, with a few challenging twists and turns. Not too many combinations came undone, everyone just looked be having an absolute ball. Personally, it was my first jumping competition in about 20 years! I was pretty pleased with our 5 small penalty points, and no time penalties, despite the fact that we executed a relatively even serpentine of 3 loops navigating our way to fence 8!! Congratulations to all the winners and place getters, who enjoyed some great prizes, thanks to our sponsors at Horseland and From The Tack Room. Here is a snap shot of the winners... A huge thank you to the WAR committee who work tirelessly so that we can enjoy a great day, and also to the helpers on the day itself.

7 Test & Talk Day Report by Chris Wow, what a long day! Megan, Adele and I set up the arena on Saturday afternoon with only the three of us I think we did a pretty good job (it didn t seem too crooked!) Floats started arriving at around 9.00a.m, Pat was first up followed by Leonie then me in the level 4 section. With the great feedback from Sally we should all go out and win!!! If only us as riders can get over our nerves!! Maybe a shot of scotch might help! With Claire McMorron taking over the judging for the level 2 section with Sam & Megan riding, both doing a brilliant job. What a vast difference from level 4 to level 2!! Then came all the level 3 s, I didn t see all the tests but riders certainly did seem to improve on their second go. Whilst sitting there watching riders and their steeds warm up I did notice what a brilliant job they were all doing, THEN they entered the ring, all things didn t seem to go to plan as it did in the warm up THERE GO THOSE NERVES AGAIN!! With Mo & Gypsum having their first go in a dressage arena they did a very good job and didn t seem too worried about the sand flicking at the sides. Monty got a bit of what for when he was asked to work but Sally soon sorted him out. Meegan had her first go at level 3 and did a great job they are definitely ready for that level. The day did run a little longer than expected, maybe next time we will have 2 rings as I am sure that all these riders and maybe more will be at the next one. We have to pick up all the poo before harrowing to keep grass from growing on arena.
