2 2004 Season Outlook The 2004 Villanova men s lacrosse squad returns three All- Conference honorees and seven starters from a team that advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Conference semifinals one season ago. We re going to be a pretty strong team at the offensive end since we are returning seven of our eight leading scorers, said head coach Randy Marks. We are looking to get back to the conference tournament, and we have a wealth of players who are tournament-tested to help get us there. The Wildcat attack will have to replace leading scorer and All- America selection Brian Marks, who ranked first in the nation in scoring with 67 points (24g, 43a). Junior Marc Creegan and senior Richie Kratz will be depended upon to shoulder much of the scoring load, as the two combined for 46 goals and 20 assists in Creegan s 34 goals were a team-high, while Kratz managed 12 goals and 14 assists. Kratz will be playing his first season on attack after spending three years at midfield. Joining Creegan and Kratz on attack will be sophomore Brendan O Donnell, who contributed immediately as a freshman, playing in all 15 games and scoring 12 goals to go along with four assists. Sophomores Pat Bogle and Neil Brazitis return with one year of experience, while newcomers Chris Mercer, Jonathon Ansley and Eric Webber may also make immediate impacts. Our attack has two returning starters in Marc and Brendan, Marks said. The addition of Richie will add speed and experience in completing a talented group. The Wildcat midfield will include senior Matt Lucas, who will handle face-off duties after finishing second in the nation with a.664 winning percentage in Lucas was named to the All-CAA Second Team and tallied 15 goals and a team-high 71 ground balls. Freshman Chris Colliniates will compete with Lucas for the team s face-off man. Senior Dave Cacciabeve returns to the lineup after missing the second half of 2003 with an injury. Regarded as one of the top shooters in the country, he scored six goals and added two assists in eight games before the injury. Rounding out the first midfield will be sophomore Matt Starker, who showed strong skills in his rookie season, leading all middies with 18 goals. Senior Scott MacMullan, juniors Dan Fanelli and Chris Kramer as well as freshmen Eric Heidenberger and Mike Haas will battle for time with the second midfield unit. At defensive middle, senior Brian Pilger is the only returning starter, while sophomores Matt Cohen and Tim Wiegand will also compete for playing time. Our midfielders bring a wealth of experience to the team since Scott, Matt and Dave are all four-year players, said Marks. Dan Fanelli and Matt Starker are coming off solid seasons and will be key contributors at the midfield position. Chris Kramer will also be counted on to perform at both ends of the field. The underclassmen will provide added depth to a unit that also ranks as the most experienced area of the team. The Wildcats defensive unit will see the most new faces, as two starting close defensemen and four-year starter at longpole, Owen Corso have graduated. The lone returning starter is junior Jon Urbana who garnered All-CAA Second Team honors in Responsible for guarding the opponent s best player, Urbana scooped 35 ground balls last season. Junior Garrett Wells started two games as a sophomore and will be counted on to start on defense again in A trio of newcomers in Paul Genovese, Tucker Gauvain and Connor Dwyer will work into the close defense rotation. Freshman Safi Najdawi will compete for time at longstick midfielder. Sophomore Ben Remmey could see playing time at either close defense or longpole. The defensive unit is very athletic, but the veterans and the newcomers will need to gel together in order for them to find success, Marks said. Sophomore Joseph Canuso returns to the cage for the Wildcats after playing every minute of the 2003 season. The Co- Rookie of the Year in the CAA as a freshman, Canuso led the nation in goals against average, allowing just six a game, helping the Wildcats to the No. 1 ranked defense in Division I. Juniors Dan Biser and Fran Cattani will serve as the Wildcats reserve goalie. Joe is a great on-field leader, Marks said. He has quick hands and great presence in goal. He s one of the top goalies in the country. The Wildcats play four of their first five games of the season at Villanova Stadium, where the squad finished 5-1 in Colgate kicks off the schedule on Feb. 21 followed by games against Patriot League teams Lehigh, Bucknell and Lafayette. Sandwiched in between the home dates is a contest at Penn on March 6. Another trip to Philadelphia comes on March 23 when Villanova faces off against St. Joseph s. Then Drexel comes to the Main Line before the Wildcats venture on a three-game road trip to start the CAA portion of the schedule. Villanova plays at defending conference champion Towson on April 3 and then travels to Delaware and Sacred Heart before hosting Hofstra on April 24 in a rematch of the 2003 CAA semifinal game. The Wildcats close out the season with a non-conference game against Penn State on April 30 at Villanova Stadium. 2
