The Atlantic Coast Conference showdown is slated for 5 p.m. (ET). The game can be seen live on ESPNU and WatchESPN. Notre Dame is coming off a 10-7 setback to Denver last Saturday in Costa Mesa, Calif. The Irish opened their ACC slate March 1 with a win at North Carolina. NOTRE DAME-VIRGINIA SERIES Sunday will be the eighth meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Virginia. The Cavaliers hold a 5-2 advantage in the series. This is Virginia s first trip to Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish won the last meeting, 12-10, during the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Championship at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. That was the fourth time Notre Dame and Virginia met in the NCAA tournament. CORRIGAN CONNECTION Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan was a midfielder for Virginia from and served as an assistant coach for the Cavaliers during the 1987 and 1988 seasons. Kevin s father, Gene Corrigan, was the head coach of the Cavaliers from and returned for a 10-year stint ( ) as director of athletics at Virginia. Gene was the director of athletics at Notre Dame from A LOOK AT VIRGINIA The Cavaliers are 6-1 overall and 1-0 in ACC play. Virginia opened conference action with a win over Syracuse. The Cavaliers are coming off a 12-9 setback at Cornell. Virginia is averaging 13.9 goals per game, while allowing 11.0 per contest. Senior attackman Mark Cockerton has a team-high 25 goals, while sophomore attackman James Pannell is right behind with 24. Junior attackman Owen Van Arsdale has a team-best 17 assists. Freshman Matt Barrett has all seven decisions in goal. He carries an goals-against average and a.450 save percentage. Last season, Virginia posted a 7-8 record (0-3 ACC). Head coach Dom Starsia is in his 22nd season at the helm of the Cavalier program. THE LAST TIME Notre Dame and Virginia last met in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Championship at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The contest was tied 8-8 with 11 minutes remaining and the Irish scored four unanswered goals en route to the victory. Max Pfeifer led the Irish with three goals and one assist, while Steele Stanwick had two goals and five assists for the Cavaliers. Senior Liam O Connor has been leading the charge with that group, winning 56 of his 83 attempts (.675) this season. O Connor, who ranks third nationally in the category, took every attempt last Saturday against Denver and finished 15-of-21. Junior Nick Ossello is 8-for-10 this season in the faceoff X, while freshman P.J. Finley is 1-for-2. EXTRA-MAN EFFICIENCY Notre Dame has the country s second-best man-up offense percentage (.647). The Fighting Irish have scored on 11 of their 17 man-up opportunities this season, including a 3-for-5 effort versus Denver last Saturday. Freshman midfielder Sergio Perkovic has a team-high five man-up goals, while senior attackman John Scioscia has four. HAT TRICK TRIO Senior John Scioscia became the latest Fighting Irish attackman to notch a hat trick this season with his three-goal, one-assist effort against Denver. Sophomore Matt Kavanagh has three hat tricks this season, while junior Conor Doyle has one. For Scioscia, it was the third time he s netted three or more goals in a game during his career. Last season, he scored six goals versus Marquette and four against Villanova. QUITE A COMEBACK Notre Dame erased a five-goal second-half deficit en route to an victory at No. 2 North Carolina on March 1. The game was the first-ever ACC contest for the Irish. The Fighting Irish trailed 8-3 early in the third quarter before scoring five straight times to tie the game less than 30 seconds into the final period. Irish attackman Matt Kavanagh had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. He scored the first and last goals of the 5-0 run that tied the game. KAVANAGH PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF After leading the Irish in goals (32) and assists (16) last season, sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh has notched team-bests in goals (9) and assists (8) through the first four games of this season. Kavanagh produced a hat trick in each of the first three games of the season. Nationally, he ranks 16th in both points per game (4.25) and assists per game (2.0). He registered a career-high seven points on three goals and a career-best four assists in the season opener at Jacksonville. Kavanagh had three goals and two assists in both the Penn State and North Carolina contests. Kavanagh has scored two or more goals in 14 of his 20 career games with the Irish. He has netted three or more goals on seven occasions. GOING BACK TO CALI Last Saturday s showdown with Denver was Notre Dame s third regular-season appearance in Southern California and the first since 2005 when the Irish captured a 9-7 victory over North Carolina at The Home Depot Center in Carson. The Fighting Irish defeated Air Force, 12-11, in San Diego during the 1990 campaign. Notre Dame also ventured to the Golden State in 2010 to face Johns Hopkins in the San Francisco Fall Classic. SOLID SLATE Notre Dame is ranked 11th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) poll. Seven Fighting Irish opponents are ranked in the top 10 of the poll. Notre Dame and the other five members of the ACC all can be found in the first 11 spots of the rankings. Maryland tops the poll, while North Carolina (4), Duke (6), Virginia (7) and Syracuse (10) can also be found in the top 10. The Fighting Irish have defeated every other ACC member at least once in the last four seasons and the Irish have a 9-8 record against its ACC counterparts (including Syracuse) since the beginning of the 2010 campaign. The ACC will be Notre Dame s third different league in the last six seasons. The Irish left the Great Western Lacrosse League following the 2009 campaign to join the BIG EAST. IRISH RETURN OFFENSE Notre Dame returned 111 of its 159 goals (.698) from last season. The Fighting Irish welcomed back four of their top five goal scorers from the 2013 campaign (Matt Kavanagh 32, Conor Doyle 20, Jim Marlatt 20, John Scioscia 14). A DOMINATING DEFENSE Notre Dame is the only NCAA Division I team to finish in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense in each of the last seven seasons. Since the beginning of the 2007 season (a span of 115 games), the Irish defense has limited opponents to seven goals or fewer 72 times. Notre Dame has held foes to four goals or fewer 17 times during that stretch. The Irish have allowed 10 or more goals just eight times in the last 54 games. The Fighting Irish finished the 2013 regular season with the nation s top RPI and earned a program-best No. 2 seed for the NCAA Championship before advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth straight season. The Irish fell to Duke, 12-11, in the quarterfinals. Attackman Matt Kavanagh led the Irish in goals (32) and assists (16). The 32 goals established a program record for a freshman. Jim Marlatt was the leading midfielder scorer with 20 goals to go along with 12 assists. The Fighting Irish finished the 2013 season ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense with an 8.31 goals-against average. Notre Dame returned two starting close defensemen in seniors Brian Buglione and Stephen O Hara. HOME SWEET HOME Notre Dame is 45-7 (.865) at home since the beginning of the 2006 season. IRISH EXPOSURE Nearly every Notre Dame game this season can be seen on TV or the Internet. The Fighting Irish will have five contests on ESPNU (vs. Virginia, at Syracuse, vs. Duke, vs. Maryland, vs. Army), one game on ESPN3 (at North Carolina) and the season opener at Jacksonville aired on the NBC Sports Network. WatchND.tv streamed the Penn State contest and will also provide a free broadcast for the Robert Morris game on April 12. The Lacrosse Network covered the Denver tilt and Notre Dame s showdown at Ohio State (March 25, 4 p.m.) will be aired on Fox College Sports. A QUARTET OF PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Four Fighting Irish players received preseason All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse. Stephen O Hara (Sr./D) was a first-team pick, while Jim Marlatt (Sr./M) appeared on the second team and Matt Kavanagh (So./A) was a third-team selection. Matt Landis (So./D) garnered honorable mention accolades. O Hara and Kavanagh also were named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. MARLATT & O HARA TO CAPTAIN THE IRISH Seniors Jim Marlatt (M) and Stephen O Hara (D) will serve as team captains for the Fighting Irish in Both are first-time captains. O HARA PICKED IN MLL DRAFT Senior defenseman Stephen O Hara was selected by the Ohio Machine with the first pick of the sixth round (41st overall) of January s 2014 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft. The Fighting Irish allowed just 8.31 goals per game last season. That mark ranked 10th nationally and the Irish were first in 2012 after notching a 6.31 goals-against average. O Hara, a Fighting Irish team captain, was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team last season. DOUBLE DOYLE Junior attackman Conor Doyle is joined by his older brother Jack Doyle on this season s roster. Jack, a midfielder, graduated from Harvard and was on the Crimson squad for four seasons. He combined to play in 28 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons, but was limited to just one contest over the last two years due to injury. He tallied 14 goals and eight assists at Harvard. ELITE COMPANY Notre Dame and Maryland are the only two programs to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field in each of the last eight seasons. Notre Dame and Duke are the only two schools to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship in each of the last four seasons.
