DENVER The Irish are 2-1 when playing an NCAA Championship game in the state of New York in program history. Notre Dame defeated Bucknell (12-7) in the first round in 2001 and Albany (14-13 OT) in the quarterfinals in 2014 at Shuart Stadium. Notre Dame earned the No. 4 seed for the 2017 NCAA Championship, marking the 10th season the Irish have earned one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Championship. Senior midfielder Sergio Perkovic has scored 20 goals in NCAA Championship games over his career. Perkovic has scored five goals on two occasions, coming against Duke in the 2014 final and Denver in the 2015 semifinal (all coming in the fourth quarter). Saturday s game against Denver will be the 23rd in program history. The Irish are 14-8 against the Pioneers in the all-time series marks the 29th season of the Kevin Corrigan era at Notre Dame. The head coach has a record of with the Irish and is the second-most tenured active coach in men s lacrosse at the Division I level. The showdown will take place at Shuart Stadium on the Hofstra campus in Hempstead, New York. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Mike Corey and Matt Ward on the call. POSTSEASON SUCCESS Notre Dame and Maryland are the only two programs to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field in each of the last 12 seasons. Notre Dame is the only program to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship in each of the last eight campaigns. Notre Dame is 14-7 over the last eight NCAA Championships. Notre Dame owns a record in its 22 trips to the NCAA Championship. This is the 10th time overall--and ninth time in the last 10 seasons-- the Irish have earned one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Championship. Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA Championship final weekend in 2001, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015 and played in the title game in 2010 and THE DENVER SERIES Saturday will be the 23rd meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Denver. The Irish lead the all-time series The last installment between the two sides came earlier this season in Denver on March 12. The Pioneers escaped with an victory, scoring the game-winning goal with no time left on the clock. Five of the last seven meetings have gone into at least one overtime session. Seven of the last eight installments in the series have been decided by one goal. This weekend s matchup will be the second between the two sides in an NCAA tournament. Denver won the first game in the 2015 NCAA semifinals in overtime by a score of Sergio Perkovic scored a remarkable five fourth quarter goals to help send the game into overtime before Denver prevailed. The last Irish victory in the series came during the 2013 season, as Notre Dame won by a final score of in overtime. OUT OF THE GATES Notre Dame has scored 44 goals in the first quarter this season, the most of any of the four frames. The first quarter also represents the widest scoring margin of any of the four, as Notre Dame has outscored its opponents The Irish are 8-1 when holding a lead after the opening 15 minutes of play. THE 100 CLUB Senior midfielder Sergio Perkovic and junior attackman Mikey Wynne both reached the 100-goal milestone during the 2017 season. Perkovic became just the seventh player in Notre Dame history to reach the 100-career goal milestone against Duke on April 8. Perkovic scored two goals in the game. Twenty of Perkovic s goals have come in NCAA Championship games and he has 17 hat tricks in his career. Wynne is just the eighth player in program history to surpass the 100- goal mark, as he scored three times against Army on May 6 to reach the milestone. For the first time in Notre Dame program history the Irish have two 100- plus goal scorers on the same team in Perkovic and Wynne. WYNNE ING Junior attackman Mikey Wynne was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week on April 24 after his impressive offensive performance in the win over North Carolina (4/22). Wynne scored a season-high five goals on just seven shots against the Tar Heels. The junior has a team-high 30 goals on the season for the Irish and 103 for his career. Wynne is the eighth player in program history to reach the 100-goal milestone. The junior has recorded five hat tricks on the season and has scored multiple goals in five of his last six outings. Wynne leads the team in shot percentage with a mark of 0.492, ranking second in the ACC and sixth in the country for the stat. 3, 4, 5... Sophomore Brendan Gleason is playing the best lacrosse of his career over his last three games. The attackman has set career-highs in goals in each of his last three games, scoring three against North Carolina in the ACC tournament title game, four in the regular season finale and five goals in the NCAA first round clash with Marquette. The three consecutive hat tricks mark the first three of his career. The sophomore tied the Notre Dame record for most goals in an NCAA Championship game with five against Marquette. Gleason is third on the squad in points with 31, consisting of 25 goals and six assists. Gleason has led the Irish in goals five times this season, including in each of the last three games. ONE-GOAL GAMES The Irish have played a lot of close games in 2017, as eight of their 14 contests to date have been decided by one goal, including four of the six against ACC opponents. Notre Dame has a 5-3 record in one-goal decisions, pulling out victories over Maryland (5-4), Virginia (11-10), Marquette (11-10), North Carolina (14-13) and Duke in the ACC semifinal (7-6). The team s three losses by one goal have come at the hands of Denver (11-10), Syracuse (11-10) and Army (10-9). FOUR NAMED ALL-AMERICANS BY INSIDE LACROSSE Inside Lacrosse announced its inaugural batch of All- Americans on Sunday, May 14 and four Notre Dame student-athletes made the cut. Seniors Garrett Epple and Sergio Perkovic along with junior John Sexton earned second team honors. Sophomore short stick defensive midfielder Drew Schantz was placed on the honorable mention list. EPPLE ANCHORS THE DEFENSE Senior defenseman Garrett Epple was named the USILA Defensive Player of the Week and the NCAA Player of the Week after helping the Irish shut down the Maryland attack in a 5-4 win on March 4. The defenseman is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (22) and is second on the squad in ground balls (40). Epple was also named ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for two consecutive weeks for his performances against Michigan (2/26) and Maryland (3/4). The senior s performance against Maryland was the best by any Irish defender this season. Epple matched his career high in caused turnovers with four and collected a seasonhigh six ground balls. Epple shut down Maryland s prolific attackman Matt Rambo, holding him scoreless in the game. BETWEEN THE PIPES Senior goalkeeper Shane Doss has been a mainstay in the Notre Dame starting lineup for the majority of his career, as he has racked up 49 starts in goal. Doss leads the ACC in saves per game (10.07) and is second in save percentage (.528) and goals against per game (9.30). The goalkeeper ranks sixth on the Notre Dame all-time saves list with 490 in his career. THE MOTOR CITY HIT MAN Sergio Perkovic received the nickname the Motor City Hit Man from former ESPN announcer Eamon McAnaney. The senior has 110 goals in his career, which represent the most in program history for a midfielder. The midfielder is one of 10 men s lacrosse players selected as a Senior CLASS Award finalist. Perkovic has been named an Honorary ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipient and is the only men s lacrosse player in the league to earn the accolade. Perkovic has notched three hat tricks this season and has earned ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors on two occasions in The senior earned USILA First Team All-America honors in 2015 and 2016, is a three-time All-ACC selection (2015, 2016 & 2017) and is a three-time ACC All-Academic team recipient (2014, 2015 & 2016). Has come up with big plays in big games, scoring 20 postseason goals in nine games, including his remarkable five goals in the fourth quarter in the 2015 NCAA Championship semifinal game against Denver to force overtime. Perkovic is third on the team in 2017 in goals, as he has 22 on the season. COLLINS CAREER DAY Junior midfielder Brendan Collins posted the first hat trick of his Irish career in the NCAA first round game against Marquette, scoring four goals on just five shots. COSTABILE STEPS UP ON OFFENSIVE END Freshman Bryan Costabile has played a major role in Notre Dame s success this season. Costabile ranks fifth on the team in points with 21, coming off 17 goals and four assists. Costabile scored at least one goal in each of the first seven games during his debut season. The freshman turned in his best performance of 2017 against Duke in the semifinals of the ACC Championship, recording the first hat trick of his career with a team-high ND NCAA SEEDS OVER THE YEARS The 2017 season marks the 10th time overall, and ninth time in the last 10 seasons, that the Irish have earned one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Championship. Notre Dame has held foes to four goals or fewer 20 times during that stretch. The Irish have allowed 10 or more goals just 37 times in the last 111 games. THE TOUGHEST SCHEDULE IN THE COUNTRY Notre Dame has never shied away from scheduling the top teams in the country and this season s schedule is a prime example of welcoming all challenges. Eight of Notre Dame s 2017 opponents finished the regular season ranked in at least one of the national polls. Notre Dame s 11 opponents during the 2017 season have a combined record of for a winning percentage of.684, which ranks as the highest of any team s combined opponents in the country. The Irish have played five of the possible seven quarterfinal teams remaining in the 2017 NCAA Championship. SEXTON NAMED ACC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (3/27) Notre Dame junior long stick midfielder was selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career after the win over No. 4/4 Ohio State on March 25. The junior scooped up a season-high five ground balls and recorded his first goal and assist of the season against the Buckeyes. Sexton has four goals and one assist on the year to go along with a team-high 46 ground balls. The LSM is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers with 22 during the 2017 campaign. GARNSEY EMBRACES PLAYMAKER ROLE Notre Dame sophomore Ryder Garnsey has excelled as a playmaker for the Irish in 2017, leading the team with 42 points off 20 goals and 22 assists through the 13 games in which he has played. The sophomore has totaled four or more points in five games this season and has recorded multiple points in 11 outings in Garnsey has posted at least one goal and one assist in 11- of-13 games he has played in this season. ALL-ACC ACCOLADES Notre Dame s Sergio Perkovic, Garrett Epple and John Sexton earned All-ACC Team recognition as announced by the conference on April 27. The honor is Perkovic s third of his career and the second for Sexton. Epple received the accolade for the first time in his career. ATTACKING TRIO The Irish attack has been led by three standout players in senior midfielder Sergio Perkovic, junior attackman Mikey Wynne and sophomore attackman Ryder Garnsey over the past two seasons. The trio has carried much of the offensive load during the 2017 season, combining for 72 goals. Wynne leads the Irish with 30 goals and Perkovic is third with 22. Garnsey has found the back of the net 20 times on the year. Of Notre Dame s 165 goals from the 2016 season a majority came from the three players with Mikey Wynne (40), Ryder Garnsey (27) and Sergio Perkovic (26) combining for 93 goals last season. A NATIONAL BRAND Notre Dame opened the season in Texas with a win over Georgetown in the Patriot Cup, continuing the tradition of playing all around the country. Last season the Irish played two regular season games in different regions of the country, as they opened the season in Kennesaw, Georgia against Georgetown and then played Maryland in Orange County, California. The Irish unofficially opened the 2017 season in Florida, playing Team USA in Bradenton after training for three days at IMG Academy. Since the 2013 season, the Irish have played regular season and postseason games in seven professional stadiums, including Lucas Oil (Indianapolis), Met Life Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.), EverBank Field (Jacksonville), Sports Authority Field at Mile High (Denver), M&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore), Talen Energy Stadium (Philadelphia), and Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia).
